    • Shocking, I know.

i still have my video ezy card but it has expired unfortunately.

@kungfuman: I have my local video shop's card in my wallet proudly, never take my wallet anywhere these days since my phone has everything on it, but it's so cool we still have a video shop nearby. Gonna head in tomorrow and grab Sinners and a couple other overnighters. Satdy nights they let you grab 3 and bring them back on Monday instead of Sunday, which works great for us since we never get through two movies in a day anymore with a toddler.

Amazing physical media is still going strong. I don't believe there will be anything else after blurays, so these things are starting to become part of a more niche audience (looking for really high quality image), kind of like what vinyls have.

      • +23

People are beginning to realise that the cloud is a poor place to source your data from. The prices are still high, you don't end up actually owning anything, and things can get deleted without recourse. 'Don't Kill Games' is only the beginning I feel, people are getting miffed at the subscription only model.

        • +4

          People have been miffed forever.

There will always be people who pay for Foxtel instead of buying TV series on video.
There will always be people who buy TV series on video instead of paying for Foxtel.

Nothing to see here, move along.

The way streaming is fragmenting and the sub par video and sound quality streaming services deliver, if these guys play their cards right they will keep going strong! I wouldn’t be surprised if the age of physical media is coming back. There are too many downsides of streaming to ignore and people are taking notice.

        • +2

Given how prevalent the question "where can I stream this?" is, they've definitely fragmented too much to the point it's become a hassle.

        • +1

          Here's the bit I don't understand.

The movie industry said that the DVD release used to be a significant revenue source, often ensuring that a movie that didn't break even in the cinemas made back its costs on the DVD release.

Well now a streaming rental is $5, 'buying' a softcopy is $15 and the 4K UHD is $10.50 in the sale. Same movie. So how come they aren't still making money hand over fist? It seems like people didn't shift from physical media to streaming - they just didn't think the movie was worth rewatching, or even watching once.

      • +1

kind of like what vinyls have

Except music on vinyl is not good quality.

        • -2

Counterpoint: vinyl sounds a bit shit but will do so forever. DVDs and Blu Ray look great until the media degrades and it becomes a paperweight, which can happen on the order of 20 years. I know that's a long time but people act like physical media is a panacea of permanence… It's just a longer rental.

          • +2

@entropy47: What you have said here is not accurate, it’s only true for Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray Discs that have a manufacturing defect, which is generally limited to a very tiny percentage of batches. Like every product there is going be a low percentage of defectives. If the discs are free of such defects then they will outlast you, you’ll likely die before the disc does. Other than that if a disc stops working it’s generally because the disc hasn’t been looked after very well and correctly by its owners. You’re free to debate it with David Mackenzie the CEO of Fidelity in Motion if you disagree, he has educated plenty of people in discussion just like you that make these claims, you can do so on Blu-ray.com or by contacting him on his website:

            https://fidelityinmotion.com/

          • @entropy47: Just rip them lossless.

            • @MisterTee: Ripping is something that the majority of people, including the majority of the collector demographic, don’t want to waste their time doing, it’s reserved for the most nerdy of nerds that actually enjoy using computers in their leisure time (I also don’t understand why there are some collectors that obviously don’t value their time, who after ripping them upload them to the internet for people who didn’t pay like they have, why care about strangers that you don’t know being able to watch the content for free). If a person has a small collection of maybe 50-200 then I could agree with you. For people that own more than 500 to several thousand titles on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray, fook that, I’ve got better things to do with my time than rip that amount of discs, which includes actually watching them.

          • @entropy47: Discs should last around 100 years

          • @entropy47: @entropy47 I’ve got hundreds of CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K discs from over the decades and I’ve never come across a disc I couldn’t play except for those with physical damage that I myself have caused.

The players will probably die before the media.

      • +14

Makes me feel giddy and emotional seeing the positive reactions to physical media here. Initially the pessimist in me saw this deal on the front page, and thought "I bet it's gonna be all 'who buys blu-rays these days?' down in the comments", but am pleasantly surprised to be wrong.

I hope eventually more people realise that you can have streamable content taken away from you at any time, for any reason, including no reason at all.

        • +6

I recently bought some shelving and catalogued my 4K collection and was surprised to see I have 374 physical movies. There are plenty more I would like to get but unfortunately sales haven't been as good lately and/or stock is low or non-existent at my local stores.

          • +1

@dreamstation: I thought I had close to 300 (4K's) but on closer inspection the total is more in the 220 range, still a mighty effort since I started collecting them a few years ago (even mightier in the last 2 years considering most of the purchases from that point onward have been imports from Amazon UK/US or off ebay after others have imported them). My two most regretful purchases were 1) Titanic and 2) Deadpool & Wolverine. I love the Titanic transfer…. just at the time of ordering (or pre-ordering) I stupidly thought it was going to be a limited release - thus paid $100+ for it………. months later it could be purchased for $30-$50…. this year the cheapest I've seen it on sale for was just under $19….. but usually $21-$28 (WHOOPS LOL). And I took a gamble on Deadpool & Wolverine, thought Deadpool was average (putting it mildly), Deadpool 2 sucked…. yet I was swayed by the Hugh Jackman factor. Imported the Wolverine steel case 4K for $125.61 AUD. Watched it, and aside from it being a good looking movie (in terms of use of colours and whatnot) I thought it was one of the worst movies that I have ever seen. And I mean Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow level of awful.

But I'm happy with my collection dvd/bluray/4K, Essentially have the vast majority of tv series and movies that I have ever watched and loved. So my collection is relatively complete. Anything I buy now is just an added bonus. In my time I was going to JB Hifi every Friday and would end up with 5-10 dvds purchased…. that slowed down in the mid 2010's when I had already purchased anything I was interested in. Since then it'd be like one dvd (and later bluray) once every couple of months….. depending on new release schedules.

            • +1

@hawktalk: I've been grabbing most of my 4K blu-ray from Rarewaves in the UK. I've also been grabbing some rare 4K blu-ray releases from Arrow Video sold by Rarewaves that you can't get in Australia you get from there.

For example Dune 1984 4K and Weird Science 4K is what I recently got because no retailer n Australia sells Arrow Video 4K blu-ray releases. They are 4K remastered releases of old Cult classic movies that no other publisher makes in 4K blu-ray.

              • @hollykryten: I know of Arrow, haven't purchased directly from them. But know of the quality and care they put in their 4K range - Robocop (original, not the remake) is one of my favourite 4K titles. From memory the special edition (with the slipcase and mini book) was an amazon order.

I do find it interesting how long it takes for xyz titles to release here. I see coming soon on the JB website titles like Waynes World, Point Break….. I imported them a year / year and a half ago. And Ferris Bueller, Planes Trains & Automobiles + other paramount titles getting released in 4K over here in recent months….. but had been out in other regions ages ago.

Would love to know why the 40th anniversary edition of Grease got a dvd and bluray release here. But the 4K version didn't. Another one I imported a few years ago, the quality makes it look like it was filmed today… with clever use of old 1950s props lol.

              • @hollykryten: Only just found out about rarewaves and got dark city, road house and long kiss goodnight. My first arrows disc being demolition man on 4k. I wish there was more ways to buy arrow films here. They are a bit on the expensive side but all three movies are top tier in my book. Packaging is okay too

        • Me too. Normally it's just a wall of 'whoa what physical media hurr hurr it's not 2005'.

      • +6

It’s kind of booming again now. 4K really gave it a boost again. Streaming is great if you can find the movie you want to watch, which I more than often cannot, but the 4K stream is not the same as a 4K disc.

Got a big 77 Oled and the 4K discs I have look damn good compared to the same from a streaming service.

        • Streaming is becoming a joke. Microsoft just all of the sudden completely stopped renting and selling movies and tv shows and didn't even warn any one before hand. Just too bad no more buying streamed videos. And even then last night when i tried one of the movies on my Xbox Series X which i did previously buy from Microsoft it looked a bit pixelated compared to the version of the movie which i've got on blu-ray. There's no comparison.

I much prefer the physical 4K discs. Pop the disc in the PS5 and away you go with some smooth HDR goodness that isn't totally compressed like a streaming video is.

      • +6

For me it's audio quality. I have a pretty decent sound system and true HD audio is well worth it v lossy compressed audio from streaming services.

        • This is probably my biggest complaint about streaming quality, still stuck on 768kbps for 6+ channels….

    • yeah., blast from the past!

    • +3

Their stores existed in the mid 2000s (perhaps earlier). Was a nice refreshing change buying stuff there (albeit higher prices than jb, kmart or target at the time) and chat about movies.

      • pacificstorm was already middle-aged in the 2000s, that's why he can't recall.

      • +2

Ahh right. I remember now. Used to have brick and mortal stores ala Sanity. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

  • Edit - Ended up ordering Dead Reckoning Part 1, Oppenheimer, Twister and Mission Impossible 3 as my local JB hasn't had those in stock for a long time. Worked out pretty comparable comparing the price VS if JB had a 30% off sale. Thanks OP.

  • +11

Their prices are an absolute breath of fresh air after having imported a few things not released in Australia.

    (profanity) Disney.

    • Damn Disney! Australia just wasn’t profitable enough so they cut us off from physical media entirely.

  • Got a neghbor with a fetish for collecting movie DVDs. 1000s stacked to the ceiling. No idea why.

    • +1

I've got DVDS, Blurays and 4K's stacked from floor to ceiling just like movies/tv shows that show certain characters that have piles of newspapers the same way!

      • +1

        Is that your R-rated pile?

        • +1

haha not quite, I do have quite a few copies of the R-rated Robocop across dvd (many single copies as well as a few different trilogy box sets released over the years), bluray (2x regular release, 2x directors cut/digital restoration and 2x trilogy box sets) and 4K though. I have various piles which are mostly my "recent" titles, while the rest of my dvd/bluray/4K collection is in a mix of book shelves, drawers, cupboards AND a mix of storage 90 ltr containers.

          • +1

@hawktalk: I reckon you have an x-rated pile too 😉

            • @freeb1e4me: Haha actually not true, I have several risque titles in my collection including a documentary on a porn star - Stacey Valentine: The Girl Next Door….. funnily enough I got it in 2001/2002. I have an eclectic mix of everything action, drama, comedy, some romance, musicals…. what I don't really have a lot of is westerns.

      • +3

@hawktalk I started collecting DVDs in 1999 when I was 18 and built a collection of about 400 DVDs as a young adult before Blu-ray debuted. I have had a passion for movies since I was a kid, building a large collection of physical media was a goal I had since my early teenage years. I pretty much stopped buying DVDs when Blu-ray launched in 2006, other than maybe 10-15 titles I have replaced all of those DVDs with Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray versions. I have a collection of about 5000 Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays that has taken 20 years to accumulate, none of them are stacked from floor to ceiling though, they are neatly arranged on shelves.

        • Haha yes I got sloppy in my collecting, what I'd ideally like to do is get something like standing filing cabinets with open/shut doors so my collection
can be hidden and everything looks neat and tidy. I got my first dvd in the late 90's….. actually for my 21st birthday I got 21 of my favourite movies on dvd as well so that helped kick my collection along. I was a bit of a late bloomer with bluray and 4K, I did start buying a few blurays here and there when I got a ps3 in 2008….. but I didn't really "embrace" it 2019/2020 when I updated to a more modern tv (4K and also able to switch between multiple mhz frequencies something my older Samsung plasma couldn't really do and thus made 23.98/24 fps annoying to watch with judder). That's when my dvd buying slowed to a crawl and my bluray (and months later 4K) buying frenzies began.

It's been an adventure buying and re-buying movies in a format that I've already got (in some instances several times each) on dvd and bluray lol. I'm proud of my collection as well.

        • What shelving units do you have? Or did you build something to house your collection?

          • @tattooedarchivist: As I wrote in a post above: book shelves, drawers, cupboards AND a mix of storage 90 ltr containers.

I started off with a small collection of titles and it grew, but I never came up with a complete solution to house EVERYTHING in one spot. So I have a few book shelves, a few drawers, my main bedroom cupboard (which also houses my older Xbox 360/PS3 games collection). The brunt is stored in multiple storage tubs (from Big W of all places 15ish years ago). And my last 2-3 years worth of purchases are stacked on top of them.

I do have clean outs every now and then, get rid of un-watched titles to make room for fresh ones. It was a lot easier years ago when I would purchased anything/everything - I would gladly sacrifice them (eg: hated Superbad, Get him to the greek etc - so getting rid of them was an easy choice). It's a bit harder to do these days… .like a hoarder it's hard to let go lol. That said I did another clean out a few months ago - this time targeting titles I have x copies of (eg: I own many released versions of Superman: The Movie, the BTTF trilogy and countless others that either released the saem movie with alternate artwork on the cover - or with new/different extras to the previous version released).

          • @tattooedarchivist: I don’t have shelving that is mass produced, such as from IKEA, I had my movie shelves custom made out of solid timber.

  • +4

Some amazing good deals in there! Got quite a haul! Thank you very much OP, you're amazing.

  • Where’s the x-rated DVDs? Asking for a friend

  • So my movies arrived today.

I chucked my new copy of the super Mario bros movie in 4k on. Noticed the back label of the case has the HDR10+ logo and that it is a bit blurry. Is this normal? The case looks like a pirated copy.

The movie actually does not have hdr10+ and actually has Dolby vision.

    • Erm, what was the outcome of this. Are the BluRay's not legit?

      • +1

Nope they are. I found another copy of it in store that had the same issue. Poor quality control for the Australian 4k cover.

        • So EzyDVD are selling fakes?

      • Emailed ezydvd and it looks like I just didn't get a shipping notification. Package is awaiting collection at my local post office.
