I would agree with this suggestion IF you buy the crappy Bunnings shelving with MDF. But I would highly recommend not buying Bunnings shelving, and not buying shelving with MDF.
I have about a dozen sets of these, various sizes. They are pretty decent for the price. And some I've had some for over a decade now. Yes it's MDF, don't get it wet, or varnish as comment above suggests.
But I totally disagree with your assessment.
Over the years, both personally and for work, I have purchased about 4 shelves from Bunnings and around 20 from elsewhere (the better quality all metal 60cm depth shelves). The quality comparison is like day and night. I hate the Bunnings shelves and would never buy one again. You might get away with the Bunnings shelves if you don't store heavy items, don't bang into them, don't get any liquid on them, and don't plan to ever move them. Even if you do treat them so carefully, the MDF will look crap after a short time - which may be helped by varnishing it, but why spend effort on this when you could just purchase a better quality shelf in the first place?
@onceupon8: agree with you here.
I buy secondhand Dexion pallet racking and don't bother with retail crap anymore.
@onceupon8: Can you suggest an alternative? I CBF with varnishing so would prefer get better quality as you say,.
@vovka: Avoid untreated mdf at all costs if you don’t want to varnish. Pine, ply or even laminated chipboard will all last considerably longer. Mesh or metal aven longer and less maintenance. Info and links above…
@UncleRico: I'm using the original mdf shelves - they are fine. Perhaps the major problem most ppl have is excessive humidity, which must be addressed 1st as it's damaging not only the shelves.
@vovka: Nothing surer.
But I’m not sure how those using the shelves in beachfront or more tropical climes or in outdoors areas could address the inherent issues beyond the previous advice of protecting / painting the mdf. Or moving…
@vovka: Yeah. Ive got humidity by the bucketloads. So painting for me is a must.
On the flip side i havent bought one of these for yearss as i collect them on hard rubbish days and use whatever cheap boards i can get from bunnings to fill in with.
I bought the metal shelving from skyteck, full metal. The panel is also steel. It is pretty solid, 165 aud, similar size.
I'd recommend replacing the MDF as mine all sagged after a few years. It's in a garden shed, so probably a bit of moisture. But I replaced with plywood and now it's good. The problem is a sheet of plywood is expensive, it would've been cheaper to buy a better set of shelves in the first place. Bunnings sell a set with wire racks which is way better.
Decent units - much better than the Giantz shelving or their own shallower 400mm shelves, but…
If you want the best with no worries about mould or warping, custom height and width, you can land full metal 600mm deep racking shelves for not much more. These guys and others have tonnes of height, width and colour options, locations across the country and participate in the eBay up to 20% coupon sales. Only caveat is that shipping kills it due to their weight so you need to be able to pick up from one of their locations.

Check on Facebook Marketplace for these as well - got 2x2x0.6 for ~$130ish each delivered (for three).
I am having a hard time finding mesh shelves for them though…
I did just buy one of these off AliExpress, actually looks stronger structurally 1800x1200x600 $28.99
^not mesh. But bunnings have a mesh one for a good price, it showed up in similar items I'll grab a link for you
I got a similar one off Ali, not comparable in quality and nowhere near as strong.
The Skyteck and similar units are industrial / warehouse strength. Which may be overkill for some, but considerably better quality than the AliX unit, which was no surprise since it was 1/4 the cost.
@UncleRico: Oh I didn't mean it as any comparison for quality over those units but the Pinnacle (it has more bracing). What did you pay off Ali?
@parad0x: US$35 after coins and codes for same or similar dimensions to the biggest one on your link (for half the price!).
No offence taken, but the unit I received comprised wafer-thin metal supports that gave no confidence they wouldn’t just “tear” under any weight or twisting strain. They were a poor comparison with the Pinnacle shelves and no competition whatsoever for the metal rack shelving. Hopefully yours will be different and you’ll have nabbed a bargain. When things seem too good to be true on Ali, there’s typically good reason. All the more so when you consider the weight of the Pinnacle shelves and how much it would cost to freight something even half the size from our Chinese friends…
@UncleRico: Yeh I can see the paper thin possibility, well almost a given at the price - there are some listing's of them that literally look like the frame has been photo shopped to look thicker. I don't have heavy plans for it if it does show though, so it will do the $28 job I expect of it - with a similarly short lifespan I suspect as well. My purchase was more for a surface area problem solver than a storage solution.
Ive a similar style for a few benches in the shed as well but I don't even think they're pinnacles and anything with weight was bought fit for purpose and has already lasted decades. Definitely wouldn't trust anything from AliExpress or that price with either of those tasks.
I almost bought this last deal for my use case, but it wasn't worth the cost for what I need - I'd even be fine with those paper thin metal ones you find in bargain stores if it weren't for the sharp metal and miniature size!
Albeit smaller but I suspect mesh is the reason but equally cheaper;

Can confirm these are spectacular. Flawless for any home stuff and tonnes of 120l bunnings containers. i was able to get the exact specs customised on my shed with a few cm wasted/clearance
Likewise. The ability to customise shelving widths and heights allows maximum utility to fill a shed with containers full of old toys, clothes and household items that aren’t going to hoard themselves!
Just so I'm not misinterpreting, customise as in there was alot of choice or you provided dimensions?
If the latter is similarly priced or included? that alone is a game changer if the occasion calls for it. I need more workspace in the garage and it's a bunch of shelves with my partners teaching supplies that take the most space and half is never going to be used so stacking to the roof would remove a bunch of them!
No, you can’t specify a precise dimension, but height and width are configurable with a range of 20, 30 and 40cm increments.
thanks! Do you recommend the Industrial ones or the Retail variants?
Rrp $145 for those who want to know (according to Powerpass)
I did just buy one of these off AliExpress, actually looks stronger structurally 1800x1200x600 $28.99
link?
Crap how do I get a non referal link? Lol
Unless 3 links was considered spam…
Everything sold by that particular AliExpress store looks too good to be true and seems like they price everything similarly (e.g. 27, 15, 32). Have you actually received the item?
@anthman: It's AliExpress I'll let you know in 3mths lol.
Alot of stuff did sell out quickly, so idk. My items are marked shipped so that's a start
@parad0x: Just had a TEMU delivery - I can tell just from my doorbell footage… Package logged from 7m away and landed where it landed #imilerox
@anthman: I spoke to their support too because an item doubled in value after being added to my cart and purchase and they were responsive, reiterated that special prices were limited in number and they wouldn't be able to honour the original price - now we're talking 15 > 30 which I made clear was enough to make me not purchase and they didn't seem to mind. I feel like if I they were super dodgy they wouldn't be Choice and they would've done what was necessary to take my money. Just my 2c
@anthman: That's because it most likely is a scam
- No reviews on any of the 4000 items sold (They just opened July 1st could be the reason)
- Items priced around $150-200 from other Aliexpress sellers and this shop is selling it for $20-30
- Not much information about the company name in the license (not the one named shop#####003)
@DealFan: Already pointed out, thank you.
- Most likely is not a guarantee
- People are capable of making their own decisions
- For $28 I've no problem finding out and getting my money back, nor did I bother with a full background check on the seller.
- I haven't listed it as a deal and attempted to coerce anyone it to purchasing. I stated what I had done, nothing more.
Is Mercury I'm retrograde or at apogee today or something?
Having had to deal with a few scam purchases before on Ali, that very much looks like a scam listing.
They all seem to have the Shop###### name, you'll likely get an unrelated item shipped to you in a small package and have to dispute the transaction later.
@hybir: Thanks for the info. I'll try and remember to report back either way.
Out of curiosity were they Choice items? I've only ever bought from them because I assumed some level of vetting
@parad0x: Some were, some weren't. Ali do swat down the scam shops, but they close only to open a new seller account with the number in the name incremented to evade detection.
If you see the seller name Shop#######, just ignore it in future.
You don't lose any money if you're diligent and dispute it in time, just wasted time. I imagine the scam depends on keeping money from people who aren't bothered with disputing or leave it too long to dispute.
Looking forward to see if it is good or not.
Have you received this and used this yet?
@sintro: Literally the first question I was asked above. And because I've lost my patience today - How could I possibly have received it from China after I just bought?
Literally every comment above will answer your question in one way or another.
Wasn't there an ebay seller for better grade of shelves that won't swell and mold?
There's a comment above about one, not sure if the same.
Ftr: I've never had mould on one inside or out
get the metal ones @Uncle Rico suggested
the rack-it's are much more stable
Don't buy Pinnacle or Rack-It shelving from Bunnings. It's crap quality compared to other sellers who sell much tougher heavy duty shelving for not that much more. The better quality shelving is generally 0.6m deep. You can find many sellers of it, either by searching Google, or Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree etc. If searching Marketplace, you can just search for warehouse shelving and look for stuff that is all metal and is 0.6m deep. Or if searching Google, search for the size like: "2m x 2m x 0.6m shelving" or "2.4m x 2m x 0.6m shelving" etc. The Bunnings shelving won't last especially if you move it one or more times. As shelving is so big, if having it shipped, a lot of the price would be in the freight, so it's generally best to purchase locally and pickup although I guess a lot of the local sellers would also deliver it locally for a cheap price.
EDIT: I see others have put links to sellers selling such shelving such as https://www.ebay.com.au/str/skyteckonline/Metal-Shelving/_i.…
Just so you're clear on the negs you're going to cop.
Ever tried setting up a 2.4m shelf indoors? Or a blue and orange eyesore and been happy with the appearance in your living room?
I highly doubt it and perhaps good for YOU.
Not everyone needs to store transmissions on their shelves or wants an eyesore indoors. Yes there's better quality products available, as with every product, and they are all for different applications.
Goose, gander, etc.
Almost twice the price is NOT a bargain if your application doesn't call for industrial, and they're currently at their list price so not a bargain regardless of all else.
To top it off its already been pointed out in an acceptable manner by another poster well before your judgement on what everyone else should be buying.
They sell the 2m (and 2.4m, wish I waited for a deal on 2.4m for my 3m high garage!) in colours other than the orange/blue. They are available in black and light grey as well.
Some valid questions, but note that most sellers have such shelves available in muted grey, contemporary blue and white or that god awful blue and orange you speak of.
And the heights are are available in a range from 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m, 2.0m and 2.4m alongside similarly configurable widths, so plenty of options.
As someone who has sampled Giantz, Pinnacle, SCA, others and the metal rack shelving - there’s only one where I feel I got decent value for money and it certainly wasn’t any of the cheap units…
It's just the specific mention of 2/2.4, but I hear your side of everythingyouve said loud, clear and in a manner that is informative not demoralising.
Yeh that blue/orange is an… Acquired taste maybe? Lol. I suspect that's the choice of industrial use where potentially forklifts are being used and can be seen clearly, or that or colourblind people.
Put it this was, I'd purposefully stay away from anything presented to me like the above, as opposed to your post which I earmarked for by garage problem -when I'm ready to tackle it
I just replied in a comment above, but will reply here as well. I have purchased the Bunnings shelves before, and would never do so again after purchasing better quality ones. There is such a big difference. People who haven't tried both would be unaware of this. I like a bargain, but not when you can get such a better alternative for not too much more. Especially for something like this, which you may keep for a long time. As others replied to you, there are other colours and not just bright ones.
Very valid points, especially for anyone who is unaware of the existence of superior alternatives, as I wasn’t before trialling and abandoning inferior options.
Post the better ones then
@Kongzi: Look up. Links have already been posted twice.
The poor man can explain it to you, but he can’t understand it for you…
Have these and they seem to go alright.
I think they go alright too, got 3 shelves now
Any recommendations for good (but affordable) garage cabinets?
Have multiple Pinnacle racking units in my garage in WA, plus one heavy duty pinnacle bench for the very heavy bench drill press along with a tool bench with hutch.
No issues here in WA re mould on the racking units but did paint the drill press bench surfaces as I wanted to keep the area very clean. For price paid and easy install cant complain.
Units about 2-3 years since installed.
When will you knob heads learn.
The mark of a true knob head is one who puts a space between knob and head.
LOL! How ironic…
Shellac for MDF.
If anyone wants a good second hand unit I'll be selling one on the gold coast for $50 in the next week or so!
Highly recommend varnishing the MDF to prevent mould
