Arc'teryx Alpha SV Mens Waterproof Climbing Jacket $1,015 (Was $1,450) Delivered / QLD C&C @ Wild Earth

1130

Hi Guys looking forward to the comment section on this one!

Wildearth is doing a 20% off sale on Tanager (Red) and Edziza (Yellow) Alpha SV climbing jackets.

Yellow: https://www.wildearth.com.au/buy/arcteryx-alpha-sv-jacket-me…

These jackets are overkill for most, i've got a Beta AR i use as a ski jacket and found the Gore-tex pro to be alot thicker (100D all over vs 80D in high wear/40D low wear) and less breathable at the benefit of durability. Also runs much more slim than a Beta AR which some people might like. The Tanager colour is a much softer red in person whilst the Edziza is identical to pictures.

M,L,XL of Tanager and XL of Edziza were on display for sizing at the Gold Coast store today.

Don't forgot an extra 3% off with Shopback ($-34.80)

Price dropped down further from $1160 to $1015 - 27/7/25

If you're buying at this price range, the rule of thumb I apply is: Is it Mt Everest-tested?

    • +119

If buying at this price. Why are you browsing OZbargain?

      • +26

        "Why"

Why not? Imagine if Porsche is offloading all their instock 911 GTS for $200k DA. It will be ozbargain-ed in no time.

        • +3

Mate that would be a high yield investment!!

      • +19

So he can afford to splurge on $1000 jackets when they come up.

        • +10

Haha. Many would be surprised to find plenty on OzB living (owning the property) in Sydney suburbs with average house price of over $4M, yet probably the most frugal group too.

      • +4

OCD and endorphins released from nabbing a bargain?

      • +15

Being on ozb doesn't mean you are in a low tax bracket.

        • +3

The way people act over saving $1 you’d think everyone was…

      • +9

I'd say everyone has their own appetite for what a bargain is. Having 3k taken off a BMW m4 is a bargain for some, still happy to pay over 100k. For others paying 40k for a brand new car is down right ludicrous. Different stroke for err different golf players. I forget sometimes there's literal multi millionaires browsing this website as well and some upper middle class folks with multiple properties, all alongside people who browse everyday waiting for those eneloops special and that's a major discount or purchase for some people.

      • +1

I don't understand this sentiment. Is this website for cheap things only?

        • +3

This website seems to be for people who lack imagination.

If they don't have the imagination or experience to understand why it might be worthwhile to them personally, it must be a waste of money.

This jacket is designed to keep someone alive in specific alpine environments where there is significant risk from snow storms and avalanche, away from mobile phone coverage.

Yet so many posters here think it's totally reasonable to spend multiples of this on a big OLED TV.

I await the incoming downvotes from all people who think the pinnacle of existence is parking their ass on the sofa to watch the footy.

          • +1

@rumblytangara: Yeah another example are gaphics cards - you can spend as much as you want and not cop abuse, just get mad respect from the nerds.

If it truly is a proper climbing brand and technical then it could well be worthwhile for those that climb and hike in extreme conditions. The same shop sells a lot of expensive fashion brands so who knows. Seems like a lot to swan around in otherwise.

    • +10

At this price, I assume it comes with a return economy airfare to Everest.

      • -4

        Why would it?

        • A jacket does not normally come with a free flight to Mount Everest. This is an extremely unusual and unlikely combination of items to be offered together as part of a promotion or purchase. The cost of a flight to Mount Everest, even an economy flight, is significantly higher than the price of a jacket, and there is no logical connection between the two items.

      • +1

It comes with a piece of the Everest summit so you don't even have to go! You can just use this jacket at the line up for school pick up

  • +18

No XL available, you just saved me $1160.

    • +25

you're in luck. XL is back in stock.

    • +1

      They heard you

  • +2

    My comment. One word.

    Aldi.

    • +15

      Temu

    • +23

If you're not being active anywhere cold, wet and/or windy then sure, Aldi will do. I've had a couple of higher end outdoor jackets over the years that have quite literally helped keep me alive in white out blizzard conditions. I've had lesser quality (but still decent) jackets fail to cope with a wet weekend's bush walk.

These jackets exist for a reason.

      • +1

I prefer Canadian Goose. Keep you very warm.

        • +11

          I prefer Chinese Goose.

        • Eiderdown for those who care … ;)

        • -1

          Don't get that..

Canada Goose faces significant criticism regarding its ethics and sustainability, especially concerning animal welfare, labor practices, and transparency. The evidence suggests the company is making some attempts at reform, but many ethical concerns remain unresolved.

          • -1

            @G-rig: Samsung
"Samsung faces a range of ethical concerns, including labor practices, environmental impact, and data privacy, particularly related to its AI systems. These concerns have led to legal issues, negative publicity, and calls for greater transparency and accountability."

            Apple
"Apple faces ethical criticism across several areas, including labor practices in its supply chain, environmental impact, and anti-competitive practices. These issues often involve allegations of worker exploitation, environmental damage, and monopolistic behavior."

Won't have many options left. Gemeni also seem to be pretty good at summarising ethical concerns.

            • +1

@SetTheFaqUp: Yeah. Just try and buy a brand that isn't hard on the animals, Canada goose is notorious for bad practices, I wouldn't support that crap.

              • @G-rig: I try to source local where possible. Unfortunately, not easy to find locally produced item anymore.

        • Only pre 1998 stock, post takeover they are terrible

      • +3

I've been in similar situations. Even if I were doing this sort of activity again on a regular basis I'd go with something other than Arcteryx and Goretex.

But yes, anyone who would seriously suggest Aldi or some cheap knockoff has no idea what this sort of gear is for.

        • +2

probably the same people who put the cheapest tires on their cars.

    • The word is Poor

    • Um, that was five words.
And this one is fourteen words.
      Mine's Haiku, bitch.

      • Debatable if it is a Haiku
"Mine's" would be considered as 1 syllable
        But easily fixed

        • I forgot to put an "a" before Haiku lol
Then I'd have to change fourteen to fifteen.

    • Decathlon is fine

  • +25

can't afford even the discounted portion…

  • -1

    Stupid tax

    • Something is stupid because you don't have a use for or see worth in it?

      • No. something is stupid when the price is way above than the competitor which provide same/similar/better function.

If you are after the opposite, this is not the best site you would like to visit.

A "bargain" luxury is worse than paying the full fee. Shows nothing but poor.

        • You clearly aren't part of their target consumer market then.

Feel free to provide examples of similar/better products for less.

          • -2

            @topherboi: I’m not. Hopefully you are : )

            Enjoy your day

            • +1

@NonSense: I'm not, but I also don't question those who are, because what others choose to spend their money on is none of my business.

So where are those competitor items that are similar/better for less?

    • It's like some people buy MG tin cans, and others buy bugattis

  • +8

That price looks a bit precarious!

    • +6

      And it's not macpac

  • -2

Meh I've seen better discount on Arcteryx stuff. Also the colours available are not that popular

  • What a bargain

    • +3

      By Grabthar's Hammer… What a Savings

  • +9

Thanks OP, Got 2 just in case

    • In case what?

      • +3

one for each colour to reflect the weather and mood.

      • In case one combusts into flames

      • In case one gets left up at Everest

        • lots of spare jackets on Everest, well preserved by the sub zero temp too

          • -1

            @payton: Thanks.
Went up last night and picked up 10

  • +12

Tbh at that price I am surprised it still says its made in China…

    • +7

Most of the good stuffs are made in China now…

      • +8

They used to be made in Vancouver, then moved manufacturing to China and kept the pricing at the same levels.

        • +3

Pricing went up since it got popular over there. My first Alpha SV jacket was $500 made in Canada. Lasted 15 years before it started to fail.

          • @omguleh: mine has life time guarantee, just email the dist

            • @evilbamboo: I sent it in to them, but it gets to a point where it’s not repairable anymore. They gave me a 30% off coupon so picked up a new Alpha SV and two atom hoodies.

              • @omguleh: Then really it is not lifetime guarantee.

                • @BinnyC: Never trust those claims, can’t guarantee against wear and tear after that long and using it year after year.

I did get a replacement when the zipper failed, this was before Amer took over and had to pay to ship it to Canada.

  • +5

Ohhhh ok, my brain auto corrected the price to $116.
Shows how limited my 🧠 is when it comes to spending.

  • I need to sell my car to buy this.

    • +4

I would do it too but they don't have XXXL in stock :(

  • +7

Feels like it should be bulletproof at that price

    • +1

LV or Gucci jackets go for ten times the price of this one.

      • +4

        Money can’t buy taste.

  • +9

Your literally need to win squid game to be able to afford to look like one of the guards. Just need a mask with circle/triangle/square.

  • +11

Hopefully my loan is approved on time

  • +2

    High yield jacket !

    • +1

In terms of heating or investment?

  • +2

    Boight 10

  • +1

Does the jacket come with heaters, ventilation etc??

    • Maybe airconditioning

  • +1

"Last chance" sale, until they drop the price further.

    • Last chance to buy incredibly close to RRP

  • Fun fact: Everest, the usual bucket-list item for rich ⚓, is actually a mountain full of poop

    • +5

      Bit like Australia's parliament

  • +1

I bought one of these around 11 years ago for around $475. It's still going strong.

    • +5

How often do you wear it though?

      • +1

For the first ~5 years of ownership (before having kids) I wore it a lot. These days, less so, but for example I'd estimate I used it maybe 15 times in the last 12 months.

It's a fantastic jacket, but I paid less than half what it sells for now. I wouldn't endorse it at $1100+
