i dont know why downvoted but no, i have one.

My superdry vest is warmer than this, with my arms exposed lol.

      • +16

Packs down really small so is excellent for travel

Also way better quality than the Uniglo one

        • -2

          Uniqlo knockoff?

    • +10

i need to see someone hanging off a cliff with this to proof it really is a macpac.

    • +1

I went camping at 4C in the morning recently with one of these. Only needed a thin jacket and baselayer underneath and it was very cosy.

It was $57.50 on clearance last year.

      • +1

Hey, I've got one via work and made the mistake of trying to get in behind a bush in my garden and I ended up with fluff sticking out of my arm in 4 different spots!

Just wondering now whether to wear these camping in areas with a bit of bushwalking involved. Do you use anything to help protect it?

        • +7

Down jackets are not designed for bush-bashing and, as you’ve discovered, you have to be careful even when brushing past resistant/coarse vegetation as these jackets are not particularly robust. A thin fleece jacket will be more practical in these situations - not only because it will better cope with vegetation but also because you often don’t need the extra warmth of a down layer when you’re actually walking. The down jacket becomes more useful when you’ve stopped for a break or are at camp - if you need to go bush momentarily you can always put a raincoat over the jacket for extra protection.

        • We hike, bush walk, camp, etc. Even though it's called the bush, there's far more empty space than bushes/trees. Did you fall into a rose bush?

I have a halo jacket as well and have a very big garden, and never experienced this situation.

          • @ihbh: It wasn't a thorny bush, just I did have to push in a bit to reach behind, oblivious to the fact down jackets aren't great for that.

Rarely some of my hikes do go through quite a lot of vegetation so I'll just wear something else, cheers

            Thanks @duskybay

@NotBritishorUK: What is our Macpac Repair Service about?

Macpac gear is built tough and tested in New Zealand’s wildest conditions—made to go the distance, time and time again. That’s why every product is backed by Macpac’s legendary warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship.

If something’s gone wrong with your Macpac gear due to a manufacturing fault or material defect, Macpac will sort it. Whether it’s a full replacement or a free repair, the crew will assess it and let you know the best fix. For minor issues, Macpac may opt to repair the item first before offering a replacement.

Macpac’s all about keeping gear in use for as long as possible. They’ll do what they can to get your trusty kit back in action and keep you adventuring for years to come.

              What’s not covered?

General wear and tear, age-related material breakdown, DIY mods, and damage from incorrect use, storage, or accidents. Basically, if the issue’s outside of how the product was designed to be used, it won’t be covered.

              How to make a claim

All warranty claims need to be assessed in person, and the gear must be clean. You can drop your Macpac item into any BCF or Macpac store, or send it directly to the repairs team:

              Remote Equipment Repairs
              Unit 6, 2 Kilmarnock Court
              Hoppers Crossing, VIC 3029
              Phone: (03) 8360 7113
              Email: [email protected]

Macpac’s warranty sits alongside your rights under consumer law and doesn’t replace them.

      • Do they run true to size or as usual at Macpac a bit small?

        • I'm athletic build and went down a size for my Halo. Stayed same size for Uber Light Hooded.

  • +15

Available in ozbargain orange too, it’s a +1 for me

  • Size chart is accurate?

    • +1

      Yeah, TTS in my experience.

    • Pretty much, I am 6'4" / 193cm and wear a 2XL to allow for layering underneath. Could probably get away with an XL for a more snug fit.

      • Would you say you’re on the heavier or lighter side? Weird question I know. I’m the same height but weight & shape could make a big difference

  • Out of curiosity, how are these for cold/windy weather? I'm going to Europe with the family in October/November (London, France and Italy mostly) with the average temps getting down to about 10 while we're there, and we're looking for something good and warm for the trip. This being the "light" version, does it mean it wouldn't be warm enough for this sort of trip and we need something better? I couldn't find anything on the website about how warm the "light" version is, but maybe I'm going blind and missed something?

    • +5

Id say the halo would be more suitable: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/915890

      • Ah, of course the hooded version isn't on sale at the moment! Will have to keep an eye out for it I think, but thanks for the suggestion!

      • +1

Thumbs up for the Halo jacket. I was hit with a freak 3-4C weather during my travel (mean temp supposed to be mid 20s) and the Halo I brought along saved my skin.

Note an additional layer is recommended for sub-zero temps as the Halo otherwise then won't cut it.

      • But the Halo takes up way more space when packed.

    • Their website (linked below) scores this jacked a "1/5" for "warmth" compared to their other jackets. This doesnt say much really but I would guess it's better suited for layering up with other clothing items.

      https://www.macpac.com.au/macpac-mens-uber-light-hooded-down…

      • Ah, thanks for that, for some reason I thought the BCF website would have the same info as the macpac website so didn't check! Yeah, I think you might be right - if we did get it, we might need to layer up - maybe I'll see if we can find something warmer to begin with instead of this one then - thanks for the tip!

    • +2

I'd say it depends on how much walking you will be doing.
I find when travelling its best to layer so you can adjust accordingly.
Whether the uber light or halo, you probably want a water/windproof outer if its wet out.

      • +1

Actually that's a very good point. No point us only having something super warm but then walking 10k+ steps somewhere crowded and be too warm with the thicker jacket but too cold for nothing!

    • I wore this with a long sleeve T-shirt under for the whole month of December through Germany and France. I'm a big fan.

  • +6

I've got this and the Halo down and I probably wear Uber Light more. The Halo is quite warm so I only wear it when it's super cold. Depending on the size you get, you can layer up more and be fine with the Uber Light.

From what I can, the men's is closer to TTS compared to the Halo which runs large. For women's it's quite narrow across the shoulders, so you may want to size up.

    • +2

Agree. Halo is really for sub 5 degree temperature for me

      • I wore Halo with a knit jumper in 7 - 12 degree weather yesterday, but had to take it off. Agree it is sub 10 degree if wearing layers underneath.

  • not shipping to metro QLD not sure about regional / up north.

    • mine went through for SE QLD. Minimal stock in person for the area

    • I'm in the same boat - when I try to add it for delivery it says this item can't be delivered, and has to be click and collected, but there's no stock in any of the BCF locations that I can find unfortunately

    roadman special

  • +5

Thanks OP. Finally bought one after years of ozbargain brainwashing. Used Macquarie bank to buy a gift card with 7% off - use custom amount $88.99. Paid $82.76 delivered.

  • +2

$80-90 is a great price, I've got the uber non-hooded and vest versions a few years ago. The regular weight ones are too warm for Qld, the vest gets the most wear.

  • If I normally wear L t-shirt, does that mean I order M?

    • +1

Your jacket and tshirt size are usually the same, if your tshirt is L then you would normally wear L jacket.

    • Best to try on or google is it true to size..
Most people size down I thought.

      • I thought so too with macpac products.

    • I wear medium shirts almost exclusively, but for my Macpac Halo I'm a small.

      • And the small is still pretty big! (Same size here)

    • i wear a L t-shirt and M for macpac was a bit tight for me. I went with an L on the halo jacket last week.

  • this or the Halo ones ? thanks

    • +1

depends, halo is warmer and heavier, if you live in Mel or Tas whether the weather is colder then probably halo.

  • Unfortunately not available for delivery in my area

  • Anyone know if Rebel or Macpac will price match? It seems to have been Ozbargained around Sydney.

  • Are these as gigantic in size as the halo?

    • +1

No, not as puffy. They pack down really small. But probably not as warm as the Halo, not sure about loft/fill. Compare on the Macpac website.

  • damn…says they can't post to inner Melb.

    • +1

      Probably get stolen

      • fair enough…

        • haha that should not be a reason but to send your way, I went to rebel bought one they price matched it bcf and rebel under the same company

  • ive never really felt the need for a hooded version but you know why not. ive put off buying this for too long

  • great price for this jacket, was literally going to get one yesterday, but couldn't resist now and jumped on this.

  • +2

Honestly after years of seeing this pop up now and then, this is the first post to make me seriously consider buying one.

  • Thanks @cb3 for posting. This has to be close to an ATL price.

    • hope you could grab one. I've been considering one since last winter and then after missing the last deal a couple weeks ago @$89 have been watching the prices closely. Ironically I was in store just yesterday and they didnt have my size in stock

    • +1

BCF had them for $36 click and collect a while back, pretty sure Macpac had a better deal too.

      • I scored those

  • Does anyone know how this compares to the new Uniqlo Pufftech jacket (https://www.uniqlo.com/au/en/products/E470118-000)?

    • It doesn't look like the Uniqlo Pufftech comes with zipper pockets, which this jacket has. Much prefer jackets with zipper pockets and I've noticed that Uniqlo seem to have less jackets made with zipper pockets these days. As far as size and warmth comparison, i'm not sure.

      • Also, Pufftech is not down, it's synthetic and felt like a regular, slightly inflexible, light puffer jacket when I tried it on. But at least more waterproof then.

  • OzB Kathmandu here I come

  • I'm sadly unable to try one in store and keep getting the wrong size; I'm usually a L for coats/jackets but a recent fleece from Macpac in L was too big.
I'm tempted to try a M but am worried about sleeve lengths
    For reference, I'm 1.88m, under 90kg

    • +1

      Go for a M.

I'm 1.88m too and 71kg and I was swimming in the Macpac L. Every other brand I am a large but medium was the sweetspot.

      • Thank you, very helpful!

      • How is it length-wise on an M? I'm 182cm and 85kg and i'm worried it would be too short, i've had jackets that looks almost like a crop top so just wanted to make sure

  • +1

Random question. I always see puffers on OzB, but I have enough puffers to last a lifetime. What do people do for a good quality merino pullover for layering? Any recommendations?

  • Unfortunately we can not deliver this item to the postcode entered.

    • Yeah looks like it's out of stock for me at any stores nearby and also for delivery (tried my postcode and also 2000 just as a test)

    • Yeah same, what a shame. I have my gift cards ready for it too. I think it's OOS already…

  • Anybody know how these compare to the Uniqlo Ultra Light Down jacket in terms of warmth and sizing?

    • +1

Sizing is similar these are warmer and feel way better made. I got mine at the tend of winter last year and compared this for $90ish to the uniglo one at $50-60. I bought the macpac because of how much better I thought it was
