I’m a big Spidey fan, but never played Magic. I’m curious how the two things combine and if it could be fun for a newby (who may not be able to find someone nearby to play with lol)

You need to look about for a likewise interested friend, or some sort of beginner's group. Without a foundational understanding of the mechanics and an assurance that you're not playing against decks of a much higher power level, you'll get dummied - almost always politely mind you - at the LGS, and you could end up getting put off.

And unfortunately due to licensing issues, the actual Spiderman cards wont be on MTG Arena, which is the best way of learning the game on your own

        • That’s a bummer. I’ve been putting in more time in arena right now with the Final Fantasy set now than I have in the last 12 months of arena combined.

Arena is a double edged sword tho. Like sure you can 'learn the game on your own' with it, but after the tutorial you just get thrown straight into the player pool, where you immediately become other people's game content because they're vastly more experienced, and playing defined meta decks.

@IPYF: I dont play a heap but when I do I just play the starter deck duels to get dailies done to go towards drafts. As a relatively experienced player I find the starter deck duels fun- more fun than playing with and against turbo discard and aggro etc. as i dont enjoy keeping up with the meta. So I point new players towards that

You should consider trying MTG Arena. It's on mobile and PC.

The Spider-man set (the artwork) won't be coming to Arena, though. Hasbro couldn't get the rights.

You could buy this and just have fun opening the boosters packs and collecting/selling the cards you get from them.
If you're wanting to play the game, but you've got no one to play with, I think you'd get a lot out of going to the pre release event.

I'm not super into MTG, but the prereleases I've gone to have been fun, even for a noob.

  • it was $89 a month ago at FPV but $99 is still a good price.
