I believe this is a new ATL by $45. Get on it before they sell out and the new better Legion Go S come to town which will be infinitely more expensive.

Yes you can install SteamOS in this and it works great.

I doubt these will sell out… they're less powerful than the Z1E versions of Rog Ally, Legion Go etc which are readily available second hand at around the $500 mark. The only real pro on these is the 8" screen.

Clearly these ones are being marked down because they're struggling to sell them.

      • +8

Which will be double the price of this, maybe more.

Not disagreeing, but effectively you are getting steam deck performance here but cheaper (with TDP tuning it will be better). You can qwobble over is the OLED better than this LCD VRR screen, but the OLED is more expensive.

This is now cheaper than the base model Steam Deck in Australia. But with better specs in every way.

    • +3

Cheaper and faster than an LED steamdeck with a better screen and more storage and still with official steamos support. The Z1E handhelds are about 30% more performant, but cost about twice as much.

    • i don't get out of bed for less than 1tb of storage :D

    • OOS now

  • +6

When they drop the price every other week, I doubt it will sell out

  • +6

Would rather get the legion go z1e for $729 if they restock

    • Did they ever stock it? Seemed like you could only get Z2 variant here

      • +1

Pretty sure he means the non-s.

        • Oh yeh youre right

Does the legion go come in anything other than z1e? I always assume go is z1e so thought krisspy was talking about go s

      • I got one (Legion GO original - Z1E, 512GB SSD) last week for $759. It comes in and out of stock, low quantity and not as low as $729 so rarely appears on OzBargain. You gotta camp the Lenovo Outlet site.
I don't think the Legion Go S Z1E version is available in Australia.

    • -2

It's only ever even been close to that price with a refurb, plus no official steamos support.

      • -2

        Refurbs are basically just returns.

Don't care about steam OS, too much faffing about and inconsistent with fitgirl repacks

        • +2

Refurbs are at best open box returns, but Lenovo don't do free returns, so most of them will be warranty swaps with some amount of repairs. Windows is a compromise on a handheld, with semi-functional suspend, worse performance and a worse UI, but better compatibility.

          • -4

@Jakal: Sure a little performance hit but like I said it doesn't matter if your bootlegs aren't running in the first place.

            • +4

@krisspy: Most people aren't running bootlegs

              • -7

@Jakal: Don't care about what other people do, someone needs to pay for game dev.

      • These seems to be non-refurb. Mine at least was new (it will tell on the order page if you are getting a new ones or refurb)

  • It sucks you can't use your rewards credit on the outlet store

  • +4

I bought mine a few weeks ago and have used it every night, so far playing
    - battlefront 2 multiplayer
    - game streaming from xbox
    - dave the diver
    - wind waker on gamecube

it's just nice to hold and feels light, would recommend

    • +1

BF2, you have servers? It always shows empty for me. I’m mainly trying for the big maps/player counts

      • +1

I just hit quick play and it works 😅

  • Can someone tell me in 2025 should I be buying this?

Is installing steam OS on these not officially supported? Any downsides?

    • +2

It's got a similar (if slightly better) performance profile as a base steamdeck but with a bigger and better screen and more storage. SteamOS is officially supported (although the touchpad currently doesn't work due to a firmware issue that they'll fix eventually). If you have about this much to spend it's your best bet, if you want to spend significantly more or buy second hand there are higher performance options both out now and coming soon.

    • +3

Pretty sure it is supported as they sell one with steamOS on it don't they? Literally no different than you installing it yourself afaik (could be wrong)

No reason to not buy it in 2025 unless you want to play games with as high settings as possible, in which case i'd wait for the z2 extreme devices to come out

      • Could buy an egpu if you need more power.

    • -7

Do you actually need to play outside on the go? Or is it merely a convenience around the house.

Get a cheap 8" tablet and gamestream if the latter.

      • Even around the house I'd rather play natively on the system than stream it.

        • 30fps at 900p? By all means, more power to you

          • @krisspy: Yep, would rather take a graphical hit than deal with input lag.

That being said, at home any graphic intensive games are on the desktop, anything on a portable pc would be indie/2d etc

            • @R3STRIKT3D: 5ms on moonshine, what input lag lol

Barely double the lag of a typical Bluetooth mouse

              • @krisspy: Moonlight input lag is great and I use it all the time, but he/she might like playing games that require split second reaction times which no streaming solution is going to be great for.

  • -3

This device was outdated even before it was released.

    • +5

You need to take the price into consideration. It can’t be compared to the Z1E or latest Intel models. That are $1,000 more.

      • +2

MSI claw 7 is more capable and available for less than $700 new.

        • +1

Agree. Not sure why the negs. I have both LeGo1 and Claw and the claw is impressive. Yes they had issues but many software and firmware updates, they are stabilising. Plus the Claw even has Wifi 7 whereas the LeGo has 6E

          • @vinni9284: I didn’t downvote. I have both too. At $700 for the Claw, it’s a good buy.

But the efficiency and screen of the Go S makes up for the lack of power in many ways.

I like my OG Go, but the controls are by far the least comfortable.

            • @cnut: Agree with you. I bought the Claw for $500 used with the receipt ($950) after a week the seller had it. He hated it due to all the bugs. However, with all the software updates, the Claw is definitely improving. Btw, the Claw works better with its TB4 port connected to my Razer Core X eGPU RTX2080S than my USB4 LeGo as it hangs from time to time. How's that for irony?

          • @vinni9284: Do you have a Wifi 7 router? Because that's digging deep for a win on the Claw.

            • @soymeat: No. However have plans of getting a Wifi 7 mesh system soon

              • @vinni9284: Fair enough. You shouldn't notice much if any difference on a 6e vs 7 device on a Wifi 7 network.

                • @soymeat: I'd rather opt for newer tech that's future proof

        • +1

I have the Claw and if I was buying today I would still consider getting this instead, due to native SteamOS support.

I have tried both CachyOS and Bazzite on the Claw, and they sort of work but there's loads of hassle.

You lose wifi after sleep until you reboot, which makes the very seamless SteamOS sleep feature completely useless.

The TDP controls also seem to not work as well as they do in Windows (using something like Throttlestop).

I also couldn't get the back buttons to work in Linux, unless I set it to dualsense emulation… But then you get PS on-screen button icons which don't match the XBox style physical buttons…

Finally I needed a custom script to get sound to not cut out completely after about 1 minute into a game. This was only on Cachy (but Bazzite performance is worse, so Cachy is my pick of the two).

I agree though if you only want it for Windows and this is your price point, just get the Claw. And either one will be a better buy than LCD deck, even if for the VRR alone.

  • +2

Is there any benefit to getting the Z1E over this if my use case is mainly 2D action platformer, metroidvania, rouge likes..? I used to use my switch but these games are a lot cheaper on Steam during sales.

    • +2

No benefit for most of those games. This will play them just fine.

    • Not really. Those games are fairly light in terms performance need. So I doubt you will see much (or any) difference running them on Z1E

  • Does Cashback work on the outlet store?

    • No

      • Thanks

  • -4

    Can this run 2k and EA @ 1080 60fps?

  • Can I put any new Nintendo titles on it? In some way?

    • No. Switch 2 emulation doesn't exist, yet.

      • All waiting for firmware on a cartridge

  • +3

    Come on sub $600

    • HODL

      • +1

The pattern says hodl but my heart says now…and I don't even need this thing. What am I to do.

        • +1

          I’m holding…..

        • +1

Listen to your heart, when shes calling for you

  • Another excuse to play Rocket League on another portable system …..

  • Does Lenovo have price protection?

    • +2

      lol

    • +1

I tried to cancel my previous order last time they dropped the price. They didn't cancel it and sent out the order anyway. But I got an email saying they are happy to offer free accessories instead. Offered me a backpack, H600 headphone or keyboard mouse set

      • Maybe I will give them a shoot

  • Is this the same product as the one listed on https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lenovo-legion-go-s-z2-go-…?

    • Yup same one. This price is a genuine bargain

      • Thanks!

  • For anyone who own this; how's the fan noise? From reading reviews it's either distinctively loud or not mentioned as an issue at all…

    • +2

Honestly, if its in its higher performance modes, it can be pretty loud.

      • Thanks for the info, I am tempted, but I'd be kicked out of the living room if the thing sounds like a jet engine on the regular.

  • Rip I just bought one when they were $699 still a great deal either way

The beauty of this system is that you’re getting steam deck performance for a much cheaper price however you get a higher refresh rate screen with VRR.

I’m installing steam os on mine right out of the box.

Also just adding most Z1E devices are much more expensive in Australia same as devices with 32Gb of ram so you will pay hundreds more for those features

    • You still haven't received yours?

      • Mine arrived this morning :)

Edit: also adding that Lenovo refunded me the difference in price too!

        • Wth, how did you get that?

          • @John: I jumped on WhatsApp with them and asked them to offer a refund as I bought it only a day or two before it dropped in price

Keep in mind I did this while stock was still available

  • If I got this to upgrade from my current steam deck LCD, how would I go about moving my games etc onto this? I got a 2TB ssd and 1TB sd card in my deck. Is it as easy as moving it across to the legion?

    • -1

I wouldn't consider this an 'upgrade' over the steam deck. It's a little faster at higher TDP but certainly not enough to justify an upgrade.

      • Higher TDP so ability to get a few more frames out of most games? Yes. On quite a few games it is just faster.

        120hz VRR screen? Yes.

        Bigger screen? Yes

        But smaller form factor? Yes

Ability to run whatever OS you want? Yes.

Cheaper than a brand new SD LCD? Yes.

It isn't perfect, but I think it is a minor upgrade over the SD. Plus you might get some decent resale value on the SD too.

          • 120Hz screen is great but these portable devices generally can't pump out anywhere near 120fps. VRR is nice though!
          • Bigger screen yes, but it's still an LCD. The Steam Deck is lower resolution which is better suited to a portable APU.
          • Both devices can run whatever OS you want.
          • Lenovo legion go doesn't have the dual trackpads that the steam deck offers (useful for RTS, FPS).
          • Lenovo legion go is about 15% heavier than the SD.

            a minor upgrade at best.

  • Ordered, can't wait to see if I use it over the long term of shelve it after the novelty wears off :P

    • Don't shelve it, sell it to me at a 20% discount

could possibly price match for a better price?

    • Let us know how you go! I don't think they usually match outlet stores, or discount codes.

      • JB don't for sure.

        Not sure about OW.

  • Hmmm, didn’t realise these handhelds werebso cheap now. Tempted to get one for a more powerful gaming experience on the couch. Mrs has control over our projector so i usually play MK mobile on my phone.

    • +1

You be able to upgrade to MKII

      • Woohoo! 12 playable characters! Bet the AI still cheats - lol

  • +3

I decided to pass on this after the last few discounts. Better to get a rog ally or ally x. The Z1E is just much more capable than this, and pretty much everything is better except the 8” screen.

Managed to get an ally x second hand for $850. Which is cheap for the X version, but I could have technically bought an ally for cheaper and just upgraded the battery. I cba with that though.

    • -2

If you see a deal for a ROG Ally under $850 post it. People will be very interested in it.

  • +2

Decided to jump in on this. Been hodling for the the past few deals and yes I do think that it will go even cheaper but I FEEL like I'm towing a fine line between getting it cheap and the next gen suddenly coming out and not getting it at all.

It feels like this device is discounted highly because of the shoddy windows experience, but the fact it now has official SteamOS support is huge and offering a windows handheld turned SteamOS seems like a manufacturer oversight that won't happen again. I can easily install it myself so it seems like a great discount for not much work and massive improvement to the otherwise poorly reviewed device (because of the high RRP + windows experience) but now at a massive discount. I know I'd never buy a handheld for more than $650 and I think that even though better devices are literally weeks away, but I'm vouching on these being significantly more expensive.

So I guess I'm gambling on getting this before it completely disappears, it's probably safe to say it will be discounted even more for clearance when the new line comes out. But I'm also gambling on there not being a massive generational leap on handheld performance that brings the budget tier down to this price as well. If there is, then I'll regret it lol.

Yes this whole comment is just to rationalise/justify my financially irresponsible purchase as someone who hardly even games and has a powerful desktop at home. Who thinks I'll be kicking myself in two weeks when this thing is sub 600 and hasn't even shipped yet? 🤣

    • +1

Newer units will be at least $1,300. Anything above a Z1 extreme will possibly be more.

There is just a big price gap in performance at the moment.

    • +1

Legion go 2 has actually leaked in the last day or two and is fairly underwhelming specs wise except for OLED screen. But expect it to still be double the price this is currently

  • The Z2 Go S running Steam OS feels like it's the entry level sweet spot, it's better than my trusty Steam Deck LCD in every way except ergonomics (but that's subjective). I remember my OLED's screen being better but the Z2 Go S has just enough performance headroom that I would choose it as my first handheld if I was to start from scratch today. The 99Wh 100W capable power bank I got from Aldi for $50 over weekend can keep me playing on the Go S for much longer too and all up for cheaper than my SD OLED was a year ago.

    • Is that Aldi battery still available ?

      • Should be, it was one of this past Saturday's special buys. You can use the stock checker on their website under the Help & Support links on the bottom of the page, search for "100w".

  • Was waiting for a steam deck to go on discount. Perhaps i should just grab this and whack a new OS on it.

On a chat with JB for a price match. Currently 28th in the que. Oof

    • How did you go? I assume no one will match an outlet price

      • +1

JB tried to claim this was refurbished and would be damaged and scuffed and wanted to upsell me on a new one from them for $900.
I declined and closed the chat window.
