  • Amazing prices, and honestly, and absolutely fine airline to fly with! The double luggage allowance is amazing too - although I was made to transfer 2kg from 1 suitcase to another, which literally made no sense lol

    • +3

Weight limits are for individual articles for worker safety, not sure how it doesn't make sense.

      • +1

It was barely 25 or 27kg, I don't remember… Considering 30kg per suitcase is common on many airlines, it didn't make sense to me that they made such a fuss over transferring 2kg from one suitcase to another! It actually made the other suitcase weigh the same as the first… Simply a power play of someone with authority who woke up on the wrong side of the bed haiyaaa

        • +1

When airlines say 30kg, it is usually total weight allowance. Typically, the weight limit is 23kg, and anything over that is counted as oversized baggage and is handled separately from the usual stream of baggage. 32kg is the limit for oversized.

          • @ATangk: Fair enough… just the fact that she made me put it into another suitcase which ended up exactly the same weight as the initial one, got me super confused

Example dates below all have short layovers

    7-8 hrs is short layover??

    • CS offer free transit hotel, includes transfer to and from

      • These tickets are usually discount Z fares and not technically eligible for a transit hotel

        • CSAir has free layover hotel for all classes in Guangzhou. I guess they're relatively generous as it's at their home airport.

        • I booked mine last time via trip and it’s Z class, and I got the transit hotel

      • +1

This the airline that charges you more if you don’t want to sleep in the same room as a stranger?

        • This is a very common practice, but not always, depends on the flight time. I had a few layovers in the past years in Guangzhou with CSAir and never arranged to live with another stranger. Besides even so the charges are very reasonable. Talking about $20-40 for your own room.

          • @xmagic:

This is a very common practice

Have never heard of any other airline expecting customers to do this.

            • @PainToad: Probably a cultural thing. Most chinese airlines do this if they offer free accommodation especially as you mentioned on lower fare tickets.

        • Sorry, what?!

          • @ryefig: Exactly. People here try to make out it's a normal thing to share a room, bathroom and sleep in a bed next to a complete stranger during a layover. Absolutely isn't. Disgusting and dangerous.

            • @PainToad: They should really be more transparent about that and let customers know this up front rather than having to hear second hand through forums like Ozbargain..

This looks like their policy, and the only sentence that comes close to letting you know this is section 9 - "9. Passengers who are not part of a group will be accomodated to different room in the same way as strangers.". Not too sure how to interpret that.

              • @ryefig:

Not too sure how to interpret that.

Because it's terrible English and makes zero sense. The website also looks like it's from 2005.

How would anyone trust this airline.

    • For a European destination, thats not bad. I would call 12+ hours a long layover. The link for the free transit hotel is:
      https://www.csair.com/en/tourguide/transit_flow/free/

I didn't post it in the OP as I thought 7-8 hours is too short to bother going to & from a hotel. The minimum layover time to apply for the hotel is 6 hours, so it is possible

      • Is the free accomodation policy for transit more than 6 hours still applicable ?

The link you provided states "Flight dates between January 1, 2024 (inclusive) and December 31, 2024 (inclusive) meet the following conditions".

        • Pretty sure it needs to be 7.5h plus

        • Guangzhou's transfer hotels are very close to the airport. They've been doing them every year for many years now, but if you have more time its best to just head into the city for a meal.

  • +2

Very interesting - the 2nd flight segment is mostly over Russia.

  • +2

I flew with them very regularly. Let me give you a true thoughts about them.

    Pro:
    -Generous luggage policy.
-Free hotel transit for ALL booking classes (if you travel by yourself then you have to out of pocket roughly 20 bucks to sleep alone or you will be sharing the room with a totally stranger. Good for couple or families).
-Attentive services and full amenity kit for long haul flights. Yes Melbourne to Guangzhou is long haul, 8 and half hours.
-Modern aircraft B789 or A359, semi-aging B777, comfortable seats with heaps of leg room (I am 174)
-Faster to Europe comparing to other non chinese carriers due to fly over Russian space and it is absolutely safe.
-Really good price! You will never find 1100AUD return from 2 big cities to LHR with Qantas.

    Cons:
-The website is VERY hard to navigate. Seems to zero chance to manage booking over the website, by manage booking I am not changing date or whatsoever, just go in there to have a look flight status, pick seat and add meal requirement plus frequent flyer number bla bla. But you are welcome to contact their office via email or face to face (Next to Flinders St for Melbourne Office).
-The staff speak minimal english onboard.
-Food and beverage, to me 6.5/10

Sum: Good price, book that flight, travel to London and see your loved ones.

    • The website is VERY hard to navigate.

Seems to be a common thing for Chinese airline websites. I made a booking on China Eastern (business class fare was so cheap) and the website was the worst I have ever seen.
The manage booking section did nothing and the seat selection section was a completely different section of the website. According to the landing section on the seat selection page, you were allowed to change your seat only 3 times… not sure why.

Suppose the terrible website contributes to the affordable fares!

    • You could use the wechat mini apps, it’s way better than the website though

  • Do these prices include taxes? The flights cost nearly as much as it does just to book a reward flight, before any points are consumed.
