Backdated/Retrospective Energy Transfers for Electricity Retailers

Has anyone experienced a date of transfer that is much earlier than the date they actually initiated the transfer?

E.g. I initiated a transfer to EnergyAustralia on 21 July from Powershop, and they backdated the transfer date to 8 July. Called both retailers and they all said there is nothing they can do to change that, it is based on the energy distributor's decision.

Yes! I subscribed to 1st Energy late May which offered a decent credit to be applied in the 4th month in exchange for substantialy high rates. They have backdated their bill to early April yet still count my starting time as late May so I have been royally screwed.

I don't know how it is allowed when I was with a cheaper different provider well before I signed up to them.

I had the same with energy Australia, and of all the transfers I've done over the last couple of years, they are the only one that's had a back dated transfer date

  • How dodgy of them, I have already submitted formal complaints to the EWOV, they need to be called out for this dodgy practice, there is no reason for a smart meter transfer read to be done retrospectively

    • I am in the same boat as you. Saw the bill this morning back dated to around 30 days ago. Have asked them about this but have had no response.

Let me know how you go. I'll lodge a complaint as well if I dont hear from them in a couple days.

They said they couldn't adjust the date so they offered me a credit to cover the period that they backdated

  • I had one that was forward dated. Got a whole week of leccy for free.

  • It's happened with one of our previous switches too

  • I thought I’d chime in with my experience today. Switched from Powershop to Red Energy 7 days ago.

Today I received notice from Red Energy that the transfer is complete 23/8/25 and the electricity transfer will take effect from 29/5/25. That’s just shy of 3 months, since the last meter read.

I regularly supply manual reads to Powershop.the last 2.5 months with Powershop have been using up the sign up credit as well as the Govt. $75 rebate. I owe Poweshop $29 according to the app. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Edit: I’m not going to see how this plays out. I read some other posts of this occurring with Red Energy. I am within the 10 day cooling off period and have requested a cancellation of the transfer.

    • I got burnt like you but unfortunately I was out of cooling-off period. Raised it with EWOQ. See what happens.

      • I received confirmation from Red Energy that my transfer has been cancelled. Powershop has already processed a final bill, which reverts all the sign up credits I had received over the last 3 months through referral.

Hoping this gets sorted out. Kicking myself I didn’t see this in the Ts & Cs with Red Energy about back dating the start date, however the next meter read would have occurred within the 10 day business cooling off period. All seem like a money grab.

I remember dodging this with Energy Australia by waiting to switch until after my quarterly meter read, as I had seen it in the Ts & Cs.

        • Where in the T&Cs do they mention about backdating meter reads? How do you find out what is your quarterly meter read?

@tigerjie: They mention using an existing meter read, which could be the last quarterly read.

Quarterly reads are listed on your bill as “Actual”.
