iPhone 4. It was the first real design leap since the original iPhone. First phone with retina display. It had a very nice body/form factor, which hasn't really been beaten aesthetically. In fact the current generation is partly based on it (although bigger).
The only cons were the top and bottom bezels reducing the display size, and the older-style mechanical home button, which can wear out.

Feels to me this is about when Androids started taking the lead. I'll never forget getting my first Galaxy S and thinking "WTF is this crap," exactly how I feel now when I pick up an iphone.

Always get a recent model if you can help it. iPhones usulally get 6-8 years of update support after release, so if you buy an eight year old iPhone you're not going to get updates.

I would say the 6S and 6S Plus.
Because there were so many problems with the 6, including a lack of rigidity, Apple let loose on the upgrades for the 6S. Stronger case, better chip and graphics, better camera (including 4K video for the first time), 3D Touch. It was relevant for a long time; a family member kept a 6S until mid-2024, with 2 battery replacements along the way, before it dropped dead at the age of 9 and a half.The pro series, I'm still on iPhone 13 Pro since 2021, the longest iPhone I have ever owned with original battery health still at 90%.
Haven't found a reason to upgrade as of yet; performance, AV quality, etc are still top notch.
Had the 4, 6 and 8plus, each upgraded within 3 years for various performance reasons.

Obviously the iPhone 27 which was released in December 2042. The 3,000 MP selfie camera is spectacular, and 8 Tb of Ram handle nearly all apps - even minesweeper! And QPLED (quantum physics LED) screen exceeds the human eye for resolution. And only $23,000 for the base model!
