Moro Primero Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1L $16 (40% off) @ Coles

740

I bought a couple bottles when I was in Coles on Friday, seemed like it was too good to go past at this price. Even cheaper than the Coles brand ATM.

I've had it before and found it was quite nice on salads etc.

Also available in a 4 Litre can ($45) at Woollworths @ 30% Off (thankyou to @sqheaven)

https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/0000000000…

It works out roughly 1.2 L for free, when buying the big can vs this deal.

This should be the normal price now given Olive Oil prices have fallen a lot recently but Coles & Woolies are keeping the price high and running 30-40% off 'specials' every other week.

That is literally what they want you to think, normalize high price, give discount but still cost more than before (above inflation), think you are getting a good deal.

        • +3

I see where you are coming from, it's a scummy practice. But if it's cheaper than the other ones on the shelf, then it's still the best we can do at the time.

That's why I think it's worth posting deals like this, so at least people can save as much as possible.

          • +5

@wonderboy4: Yeah I am not taking shots at you, people still need to buy oil.

Just prices need to come down more, and ozbargain helps spread that word and hopefully get companies more competitive with more educated consumers.

            • @Kommodore: imagine just how much these organisations are making, even after the 50% off

    • +1

The brand sets both the pricing and the frequency of promotions. Even if they didn’t, commercial agreements with the vineyards are based on fixed pricing agreements, meaning any reductions in product prices take time to materialise as existing contracts need to be renegotiated or renewed.

      • +2

Get outta here with all those logic and facts.

        This is Ozbargain!

Two weeks ago. It was half price

  • +4

10 times the price of unleaded petrol.

    • +52

Personally prefer the taste of the olive oil though.

      • I prefer petrol 🤣

    • +2

Don't look at the price of ink cartridges

  • +3

    This isn't the cheapest

  • +16

Man, honestly, we need to stand up to these big corporations and their shitty tactics. Our government is in on this too for sure. Scum bags with the inflated prices.

    • +1

      100%

Interesting that both companies are owned by the same company and they pretend to be competitive to keep their massive profits (Blackrock etc)

      • +3

It's the same with every other major business in Australia. It's a massive monopoly and we can't do anything about it.

Also, 4L extra virgin oil Moro at woollies for $45 so heaps cheaper.

      • +1

Do you have super? If so then you're the bad guy that owns both companies.

        • Forced by the government, so its circular environment

    • +1

lol yeh our governemnt is in on the concept of capitalism

      • +1

100% they are, watch this guy on instgram punterpolitics, talks about the big gas and mining companies that don't pay $1 of tax, and haven't for many many years, what is up with that?

  • Costco has 2l of organic olive oil for $30

    • +4

True, however, they also charge a "Membership fee", so, not easily available.

    • Country of origin?

  • +3

    Australian > European olive oil

    • -2

      nope

      • +1

Do some research lol. Australian olive oil goes through heaps of quality assurance regulations and local means less chance for degradation in transit. A lot of the 'extra virgin' overseas stuff is cut with poorer quality product or is lower quality to begin with. Not to mention they're usually cheaper $ at the shops despite importation…I wonder why that could be

    • on average it may be true, but prices are through the roof

  • +1

The same brand was $20 for 3 liters pre covic

    • I remember those days. It tripled in price in less than ten years. It's crazy.

    • I think there had been some flooding in Spain a while ago, which caused prices to increase, and that's why we hadn't seen the usual 2x1 offers we had a few years ago, but apparently they have recovered, but supermarkets have decided to keep the prices high.

      • Also increases in profits due to Ukraine was an excuse too

        • They use any reason to increase prices. This government is more corrupt then the Lebanese government, and they are bad, very bad.

costco has 1L Australian macademia oil for $15 or 16 cant remember exactly. 3 days ago.

Anything over $10/L is a ripoff, especially for spanish or “italian” olive oil.

    • Bertolli is Italian, not "Italian", and it's top quality

      • I had bertolli in mind when I wrote „italian“ :). It’s mostly north african or turkish olive oil.

That doesnt mean it‘s bad, anything from the mediterranian is better than spanish olives.

        • My bad, had no idea

        • +1

          What's wrong with Spanish olives?

  • 50% off or better would be close to a deal.

Why are we normalising 40% discounts as deals??

    • +1

Where are all the 50% deals you've submitted?

        thank you for your comment.

              @the4thzodiac: Here's another 100% free observation:

              Member for almost 20 years
              Submitted zero deals

              • @topherboi: 17 years, but thank you for the recognition.

Not sure why you're having go at me here for.

I wasn't mean in my reply to the OP and many others have echoed similar sentiment about pricing by the duopoly.

We all have different priorities, and are going through different life challenges, some have the interest and capacity (time/resource) to contribute on this forum, what's with this key board warrior frenzy?

Good luck to you and thanks for your contributions.

                • @the4thzodiac:

Not sure why you're having go at me here for.

Not having a go, but I admit I do enjoy pointing out the irony of your comments.

Thanks for reminding me that both we're on the internet, a place where you should expect to receive as much as you give.

@topherboi: oh, just realised, by virtue of being an active user (authenticated visitor) for 17 years, I have contributed (albeit in a small way) to the success of this website and brand! A website without users cannot be successful, can it?

Thanks for bringing that point out.

                @scotty - you'd agree that's the case, yes?

Third lowest rated olive oil tested by Choice. I’ll stick with a Australian brand

    • You mean a subjective test from 2021 is still relevant?

  • -2

    Is this best olive oil

  • +1

La Gina is $55 for 4 liters = $13.75 a liter at Woolies. Where’s the deal?

    • Yea that one is OK quality wise

  • -2

i'll take any opportunity to plug my local, Pukara Estate make the best olive oil I've had in this country. not cheap but definitely worth it. also moro is nasty

  • Should of, could of, would of.
Used to buy the 4L drums of moro, but screw these post 2019 prices and quality is subjective to taste.

Coconut oil from coles, 1kg is now $12, was $9 in 2023. Or might of been on sale, only looked / purchased it once back then.
Sunflower oil was half price at $15 for 4L three weeks ago.

  • Española $13 for 1L on Wed.
