Coffee and Taking The Risk

My Favorite coffee off the shop shelf would be Lavazza NO:6 Perfetto 100% Arabica beans followed by price of Aldi medium roast isn't too bad, I use a fully automatic machine but only have a small amount of warmed milk and hit espresso four times with no sugar in the mug.

I landed a 3KG OB deal some time ago from a melbourne coffee merchant here with a high presence, repeat customers,100's of posts on how good the coffee is. I think the coffee is absolute garbage, and been battling to get rid of it, but it's almost finished now.

I'm getting a lot of ads on facebook with B2GOF and 30% off a lot of unheard of coffee dealers with very limited info or photos of the actual product, only fancy names and packaging.

I don't want to blow $75-$100 on kilos of something I don't like and stuck with. So I'm asking what do you do and how did you find your perfect match, and is it better just sticking with what you know, buy in bulk when specials come around at the shop.

I also have a super automatic (Eletta titanium). My bench mark is lime blue (hope that’s not the mob that you don’t rate lol). At approx $30/kg on sale their beans are pretty hard to beat value wise. Otherwise I am currently actually quite enjoying the Aldi luxe beans.

I drink my coffee as 4 x espresso shot , no sugar too.

Inglewood Downtown is one of my faves.
Lime Blue moments to memories is another good one

      Inglewood Downtown surprised me too.

Ive had Lime blue and Airjo too, but Inglewood Downtown is definitely my favorite for medium roast

I took a punt on one during a sale (Lime Blue Coffee), and liked it enough that it's now my regular coffee for the home machine.

But before that, I'd just buy 250g packs to try out and see how I liked them. Not too much to get through that way if they're bad, and if you like them you can buy larger bags in future

  • Of all the things in the universe that are infinitely variable, then there's this post.Surely you answered your question in the first sentence?

Or you just drink way to much coffee, and perhaps you need an intervention?
    ; )

I have to say given the way the sheeples have taken to coffee machines, is anyone truly surprised that coffee scammers are charging gold prices for donkey shit?

    • Well that's the FOMO they sell and Lavazza went from $25 on special to $35 but at least you know what you're getting.
I'd rather back an underdog than getting done over by colesworth though.

Calling that a sentence is quite generous of you. Anyway, I look forward to trying the donkey shit blend. Or is it a single origin?

Take a punt when a roaster on here has beans for about $30ish a kilo. Far better than anything from the supermarket

I’ll second the Downtown from Inglewood but their coffee are really good (as is their chocolate, pods are garbage)

  • Go to a cafe. If you like their coffee, buy the beans.

Sounds like you don't have the time or money to be a coffee snob.

I recommend avoiding Single Origin unless you know what it is like. They tend to be more suited to particular tastes than blends.

    • You won't find out what it is like if you avoid it.
Everything that you like, you had to have for the first time.
Buy 250gm pack or one of the sample packs some roasters have.
The Ethiopian single origins taste very different to Brazilian and so on and so on, but that is the joy, trying different tastes, finding some you like and some you like more!
Coffee blends try to please all the people all the time, therefore are very sameish.

  • They only thing I do know about coffee is, I do like the Arabica beans, low on caffeine and high on flavor.

    Civet coffee when half price

Second this if you are being serious lol. Last civet coffee I got from Bali was $50 for 100gm.

Buy 250-500g of it. If you like it, buy more.

It's really that simple. Don't buy 3KG of something just because it's cheap, just buy the minimum amount the first time and stop giving in to FOMO.

I landed a 3KG OB deal some time ago from a melbourne coffee merchant… I think the coffee is absolute garbage,

If you don't drink it within 3 weeks it will be garbage. That freshly roasted stuff is supposed to be used immediately.

My Favorite coffee off the shop shelf would be Lavazza NO:6 Perfetto

I agree with you about that Perfetto being pretty good. I was surprised the first time I had it. On the other hand, it still won't be as good as a decent fresh roast (consumed within a week of roasting).

Try coffeesnobs bean bay, I always ended up going back to them after trying other brands. These days I roast my own but still get the green beans from Coffeesnobs.

    • Interesting, I never thought of doing that.

      • No worries, I got the Kaffelogic Nano roaster, it's only for small batches, about 150gm but I do three at a time and that lasts a week or more so the coffee is still fresh. The green beans last for a couple of years in the pantry so they go off like roasted beans in a short time. The Kaffelogic is a set and forget type of thing but you can tweak it as much as you like and make your own programs if you are really keen. I just push the button and come back in 15 minutes, perfect consistent result every time. There are cheaper options but I have tried them.

Cons: It aint cheap, it's almost doubled in price since I bought mine a few years back. But greens beans are cheaper than roasted so at some point I'm sure I'll be winning. :)
Pros: You don't have to sign up to a subscription service like some of the other mini roasters.

(I am not associated in any way, just a customer.)

  • Aldi coffee is cheap and probably the best I've found.

See if you like it, could save you much more than playing around with boutique brands.

    • lot of people have found that Aldi beans have changed their beans and not for the better

      • price has also gone up… i know it doesn't compare but dark beans are $17 now and deluxe are $27. They did have some single origins in which looked interesting, in 250g bags. It's weird though because wholesale price was supposed to be dropping. From 11 to 17 is a fairly big jump in the space of about 6 months.

        • I bought the single origin beans recently. Don’t mind it, but I can’t find any roast date on the packaging.

They remind me of Sunset Blvd from Inglewood before they changed their beans

  • I just buy 1kg to test and try many different brands.
Took me half a year before i find the one i like which is the Pegasus blend from Airjo.
I was alternating between Pegasus and trying new coffee.
after Airjo changed how pricing system, i stopped trying new coffee and just buy their 30% off 4x1kg deal and stick to Pegasus.

  • On our full automatic machine we like the Lavazza crema e aroma. Buy it from Costco for around $27 a bag when in stock. Otherwise we use the Kirkland Arabica beans.

Tried the Aldi ones and didn’t like them at all.

    • Aldi to weak?

      • Don’t like the taste of it compared to others.
