Not bad. Just booked for SYD-HND for $1070, about $200 cheaper than flying ANA.

    • +14

with ANA you can has a free domestic connection though, great if you want to go long distant then fly back to tokyo.

      • +1

Did you mean this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/871926

        I thought it had expired.

        • Did it expire? been awhile since I booked

          • +7

@chanhoz: Looks like it's still on. Found this page https://www.ana.co.jp/en/au/plan-book/promotions/multiple-st…

When you book a domestic flight along with your international ticket, you'll pay the SAME FARE whether you're heading to Tokyo or traveling to Hiroshima via Tokyo.
Plus, with the option to include a stopover* in Tokyo, you can experience even more of Japan - all in 1 itinerary.

Stopover is a stay at a transfer point en route to a destination for more than 24 hours. Stopovers will be subject to consumption tax and applicable fees.

            • @scrimshaw: yeah we did that some months ago - booked ANA SYD-HND, then added a free one way flight to Kagoshima (Kyushu).

Not only that but during booking, I selected 'best value' and it recommended different flight times - which saved me like $1000 on our total airfares, which I then happily put $200 towards an overnight hotel near Haneda before getting the domestic flight next morning.

So that was nice too - I haven't seen other airlines suggest cheaper options…

      • You still have to pay taxes, so it is similar in cost to taking the Shinkansen if between major cities.

        • Flying to faraway places is more convenient ie. To Hokkaido, Hiroshima, Fukuoka etc

      • Qantas basically do a similar thing. If you put Multi-city SYD-HND/HND-ITM/ITM-HND/HND-SYD

        • but with qantas, do you they use points instead of cash?

        • I tried to do that but it really jacked up the price

          • @RQNinja: last time I compared using my QFF 'points plus pay' the extra amount to pay was the same as the full airfare without using points

so I would have burned all my points for nothing !

            FThat I sayid …

            • @Hangryuman: Is it burning points for nothing. Besides flights. What is a good way to redeem your point cost wise?

    • +55

Sometimes all we want is a hidden agenda.

    • +6

      They've got pads for that.

    • +10

      How dare they/them

    • +6

Don't blame Qantas for that. Even when I was a Virgin guy I leaked my gender every day

      • yair but do you have the new e-gender ?

  • +5

When is Qantas going to use their HND slot they got from Virgin? Been months with no news now.

    • +1

They will be moving services from Melbourne and Brisbane to Haneda with 1 of the Sydney flights going to Narita
QF61 Brisbane to Tokyo Haneda will depart at 11.45am, arriving at 8pm
QF62 Tokyo Haneda to Brisbane will depart at 6.50am, arriving at 4.45pm

QF79 Melbourne to Tokyo Haneda will depart at 10.40am, arriving at 8.15pm
QF80 Tokyo Haneda to Melbourne will depart at 9.55pm, arriving at 9.15am

QF25 Sydney to Tokyo Haneda will depart at 8.30pm, arriving at 5.20am
QF26 Tokyo Haneda to Sydney will depart at 10pm, arriving at 8.40am

QF59/QF60 from Sydney to Tokyo Haneda will be moved to Tokyo Narita

These 3 flights include the 2 existing slots which are currently used on the SYD/HND corridor and the additional slot coming from Virgin, upping capacity to 3 daily services between Australia and Tokyo Haneda.

At the moment there are currently no timelines on when this will eventually occur as according to a memo to the Federal Government, "The capacity will be fully utilised by 30 April 2025;" which hasnt occurred as of yet. However Qantas was granted an extension by the Japanese authorities to November 2025, so we can expect the change to occur before November 2025 assuming they dont apply for an additional extension

      • +2

Haneda is the better choice anyway. Much closer to the city

        • +2

Yes however the 6:50am departure from Haneda is brutal compared to the normal 9:20pm departure out of Narita for that sector down to Brisbane.

It means that check in will open from 3:50am and close at 5:50am which is just rough in my opinion and I would rather it be positioned out of Narita.

Obviously Qantas dont have a choice as the A330s between Brisbane and Sydney (Haneda) are being jointly utilised (Aircraft will fly as QF25 from SYD-HND then QF62 90 minutes later from HND-BNE and vise versa) - its just not the best customer experience.

          • @AircraftFreight: Not sure if they have improved from three years ago; the A330s were worn out and in desperate need of a refurb

            • +1

@hardya: I disagree, ive flown the A330s and even in Economy on the -300s are they are more than adequate for the up to 10 hours trecks, the new Economy refurbishment on the -200s gives you Recaro CL3710s which is a big step up for the international/high MTOW -200s that run most international flights.

Big fan of the 2-4-2 layout in Economy, Business is the same VantageXL seat thats on the A380 and B787 - and in time they will be replaced with more 787-9s, new -10s and A350-1000s (Non ULR)

              • @AircraftFreight: ANA 787 economy legroom was much better but depends in individual preferences

                • @hardya: Oh any Japanese carrier will blow Qantas out of the park, but in terms of Qantas being an average decent airline? I would say so - but nothing like ANA or JAL

          • @AircraftFreight: Hi Aircraft Freight, just booked a trip for May next year, Melbourne to Narita.

Would this be moved to Haneda theoretically?

            Good if so…

            • +1

@ChrisCam: Most likely, by the end of November everything should be moved to Tokyo Haneda on the Melbourne sectors.

QF79 Melbourne to Tokyo Haneda will depart at 10.40am, arriving at 8.15pm
QF80 Tokyo Haneda to Melbourne will depart at 9.55pm, arriving at 9.15am

  • Does anyone have insight on why end of Sep Syd to Tokyo is so expensive? I checked it's not school holidays in NSW or public holidays in Japan?

    • +1

      Silver Week?

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Week

      15 to 23 September 2025

    • School finishes 26 September. Even dates before this will be more expensive

      • Vic schools finish on 19 September

      • -1

This is good to know. So it's like one week before Xmas is the most expensive time ever. I didn't realise this was a thing considering there's so many school holidays in a year.

      • NSW 'School finishes 26 September.'

    • maybe because of Golden Week? China national public holiday1st - 7th Oct.
I've travelled through asia during then and it's hectic to say the least.
Plus the weather becomes milder in Japan late Sept, avoid Japan in June/July/August.

      • June/July/August

I've read this before but when I looked into it Sep is the highest month for precipitation. Apparently, there's a very high chance of a typhoon storm in Sep that dumps a lot of rain for a couple of days.

        • if you want real excitement, catch a flight during a typhoon …

we were the only plane that landed in Okinawa one day (turned out to be in the eye of a typhoon), and as the ground staff had been sent home expecting a closed airport, we were kept inside the plane stuck on the runway for 3 hours while the wingtips almost touched the ground from the wild swaying in 85mph winds

then there was the other time we got a free night luxury hotel and snow crab and beer dinner due to typhoon flight cancellation, and our next day flight from Sapporo flight path was so many go-around loops it looked like a ball of wool !

  • Appears to be similar pricing from Hobart too - but via an OTA which is gross.

  • +4

qantas has the worst food of any airline imo

    • +2

If I could fly a major airline and the flying time is less than 10 hrs, I'm ok with that.

    • +4

Good ol' Penne Pasta in cardboard box, you can always guarantee it will be an option. Dry, hard, vinegary slop.

      • and it tastes more like microwaved cardboard than it does actual food

    • +1

I see this as being dependent on which leg of the journey you are on.
This year I have done HK ex Melbourne and Manila ex Sydney.
Outbound from Australia, the food is good, comes from the Australian catering and lots of good snacks and hot food quality is good.
Return journey, comes from whatever is the standard from the caterers in the departing overseas city and a lot less options of everything. Sometimes the quantity of the meal is good but drink and snack options are very low.

    • I used to think that too, then I flew business on cathay pacific tokyo to Singapore. bland, dried out and inedible with an odour like armpit after the gym, the worst thing I have ever had on a flight even when taking into account economy flights and I can pretty much eat anything but I could not eat whatever the hell it was (some chicken thing).

      • Yeah, I've had that experience too in Business class with Cathay in the past. I would say number 1 enemy for a good meal is overcooking.

The issue for Qantas is since they don't offer too many sides and rely on one large main, if that main is overcooked, then there isn't that much else to eat.

I've had some excellent meals on QF recently but ive also had so so meals. On the catering front they are fine as at least they have fresh items unlike some other airlines who only have shelf stable items.

Their Aviation Spritz drink is excellent thought.

      • +1

I’ve flown Cathay MEL > HKG > NRT return before and the food was amazing. Must depend on the route or luck

        • +1

They have improved. I remember being in Business as getting what I would call slop on a Vancouver to Hong Kong flight in 2017, but i flew them recently in economy and the food had improved.

They do now plate a lot of their food in business which usually works better as they can at least cook different elements for the differing times they need.

Their lounges are top notch though.

    • Agree never again with Qantas as worst airline to Tokyo, food was all out and my child was left hungry they only provided snacks !

    • especially compared to ANA food. with ANA, you get delicious Japanese meal and green tea.

  • +1

BNE is only direct to Narita. Qantas only operates to Haneda from Sydney

    • You are right, will update

  • -1

Is Qantas going to send me three plane tickets for every one that I buy and then cancel it all?

  • -1

46 kg allowance like Indo airline?

    • +1

      I dunno, click the link?

  • +1

I bought flights on qantas 2 days ago, now 300 cheaper 😡

    • Same!!!! Damn Qantas

      • +3

Golden rule is book and don’t look!

  • Why fly Qantas when you can fly Japan Airlines or ANA for the same price??? Poor customer service and meals

    • It's about 20% more expensive to fly on ANA at the moment.

      e.g https://www.google.com/travel/flights/search?tfs=CBwQAhojEgo…

$250+ saving per ticket, which can be a lot of money if you're going as a family.

      • :) scoot is coming in at sub $800 if anyone is keen on a stop over.

        • +1

That's for the basic fare with no checkin luggage or meals or seat selection. If you upgrade beyond basic the price difference is really small — not very competitive pricing vs qantas.

    • If you are not travelling out of Melbourne and Sydney, Qantas's included domestic connections for only a little bit more, can really save you money. JAL and ANA are top notch airlines, but Qantas is no slouch either (Qantas is one of the few airlines to include spirits in their included drinks).

      • +2

Together with a side-serving of attitude and aloofness

      • "but Qantas is no slouch either"

        Yea, neh.

    • agree with you @bruceclipse worst airline!

    • Would def prefer to fly JAL/ANA than Qantas if same price! But this deal makes JAL/ANA double the price (2590.14 for 3 pax on Qantas vs 5,278.56 on JAL) so a no brainer

  • -5

Visit Japan before the far right wingers take over.

  • Finally some +ve vote for a QF deal, being priced close to Scoot within the same period.

  • Gone? showing up as $2000+

  • Was it a price error? All dates are now $2000 or more

  • just have to check dates - alot of dates available were gone in the last couple of hours but some dates are still there

    • Yeah I can still see this price around certain dates. Too last minute for me to book something though, sadly!

  • What plane is it? If it’s Boeing I ain’t going

    • You might be lucky with a Comac flown by Qantas in the future.

  • In November the cheapest return flights from BNE are $1500.

    • There were plenty yesterday, they've sold out
