  • but does the NBN connection box ethernet port even support 10G?
just curious as I'm on HFC.

    • +3

New ones will support 2.5gb at least…

    • +3

If you order a 2gbps connection, your HFC NTD will be upgraded to the newer model with a 2.5GbE port.

      • I think I already got the new one, the old NTD died and NBN technician came and told me this is the new one.
my question was more on the FTTP connection box.

    • +2

      The 4 port version has 1 x 10Gb port and 3 x 2.5Gb ports I believe.

    • 3 new boxes are approved that provide to meet the new speeds. They provide either 2.5G, 10g or 25g and you will get the one that aligns to your plan speeds.

Been running this too for about 3 weeks now. Really happy about it! I got it for $559.
    ISP Superloop and on HFC

  • I’m so tempted. I’m in no rush and wondering if I should wait for a better deal.

But my UX express are so underpowered I can’t even manage my network

    • under $500AU might not really be achievable considering these are 279USD = ~$430AUD
a slightly cheaper option might be the UDR7, which I've seen at around 480AUD with similar eBay codes

or even the UX7, which would be a massive upgrade in power vs your original UX

Yeah, fair enough. I bought - thanks for convincing me haha

        • +1

welcome to the crew! I paid about 540 for mine

  • Love this one. Paired with the U6 Pro.

  • For those without ebay plus its $530 at mwave

Be interesting to see if they jack the price before the 15% off that starts tomorrow

  • Jumped on the train using unifi lately. Got the UDR7 a month or so back. Very happy with that. Pretty straight forward setup. Got von setup on separate VLAN and SSID. Great to put Xbox on 24/7 to get cheaper games :).

    • God damn, I just bought but knowing my luck it’ll be discounted further

  • This is even useful for my 1gbps connection. With the full suite IDS IPS geo blocking qos etc whatever the hell it is my UCG-ultra is lower than the full 1gbps I think it sits at 800mbps approx.

69 devices (including 4 unifi AP for cameras) connected to udr7. Blocking on and ad block, got 931 just now. If it's similar to that the speed is so much better then other devices I've had. Got that for $508 when on sale. (Using eBay codes)

      • But if that's the case wouldn't I just get the UCG Fiber?

        • -3

Didn't think about it back then. And got a good price for it. Got a few 2.5G switches and 10gb SFP Between them. Got lot of smart devices. And with 5 kids few iPads Xbox ps and other things. Always something not sure about and block it and wait for someone to whinge internet doesn't work lol. If no whinge within a day (as they will know) i know it's something I got and wasn't classified correctly on unify devices.

Starting to cluster up addresses and VLAN so easier to sort out what they are ex IOT, cameras, main server systems such as UNRAID, home assistant. Kids stuff.

@Mikael: I am going to have to adopt your “wait and see” policy. I haven’t been able to do any sort of device blocking, or filtering because my UX Express is just unusable. I kinda knew this when I bought it, as I needed something quick, but I cannot wait to upgrade. Will be good to have a usable Unifi OS.

        • UCG-Fiber was hard to get initially and expensive. I paid a lot more for my UCG-Fiber. It's also a device that entices you buy more UniFi products. You will want an access point (more likely access points). To achieve "sort of" equivalent WiFi level to UDR7, you need U7 Pro XG (but U7 Pro XG technically has slightly inferior range). The m.2 tray price has come down a bit (still rip off price I reckon). You could 3d print one if you really want to save I guess.

IDS IPS implemented by UniFi doesn't support https / SSL traffic so it isn't that useful. As for more 10Gbps ports, you still want a 10Gbps switch (because UCG-Fiber's backplane is ~9.3Gbps). One advantage over UDR7 is its ability to support more UniFi Protect cameras, but as soon as you use UniFi Protect on UCG-Fiber (and UDR7), you will notice both have high memory usage. If you prefer to have the G6 (4K) cameras, UCG-Fiber only supports 5 of them.

Despite UCG-Fiber having a chipset that's more powerful than UCG-Max (and UDR7), UCG-Fiber doesn't boot up any faster (cold boot). I was expecting a much faster boot up (but it was basically the same slow / long cold boot). For me, my migration from UCG-Max to UCG-Fiber was unpleasant (the default backup / restore method didn't work; had I known that, I would have done a fresh setup. However, my setup was quite complicated). With that bad experience, I am now continuing down my mixed setup and plan to have a full backup solution should my UniFi setup went !@#!@#. When the migration failed, I lost WiFi access on all UniFi access points, lucky I had non-UniFi access points still working while I fixed things up).

UCG-Fiber is a smart move / product from Ubiquiti. It entices customers to buy more products. However, if your have devices with 10Gbps LAN support (or plan to move to 10Gbps LAN setup), then for now, UCG-Fiber does appear to be a good choice.

        • Probably yes. But in my case wifi was very bad in the house. Also because ability to upgrade to 2000 speed when available. I know this does it too. Just didn't wanted to pay more for wifi devices just yet. My unifi AP are older models. So around office and tv room. Good wifi. I went from and old Google nest setup. And had to use an old dlink to hook up some troubled IoT devices that kept dropping out. Google nest didn't separate bands well.

Yes, tried and noticed used lots when using protect. Uninstalled it and using my REOLINK NVR. I wouldn't put a 4k video on it, even if they say it's fine.

  • Ugh, paid $530 last week, then it went down to $517, got a price difference refund and now it's yet another $10 cheaper lol, rip
