Bought this while it was + code only at this price. I tried to port a backup config from a UX Express - had many issues, wouldn't adopt the AP, DHCP settings didn't carry.

Unless you have an extremely complex setup, I highly suggest just a fresh setup! Would actually have saved me 3hours of troubleshooting (I thought it was an issue with my AP). Though the restored config should work per all forums/docs, just wasn't playing ball for me!

Device is solid, though, now it's setup. Interface is many many times faster than a UX Express. I nabbed a USW Flex too, and it's being powered by the POE Port on the Fiber,~21w power budget - enough for my AP, a meross hub (with type c/poe adapter), and some non-poe switched items without any issues! YMMV for any extra POE devices, though.

The USG3 => UCG backup then restore config did work for me so on a device basis YMMV…

Yeah for sure. But sometimes it's just better to start fresh anyway you know? Unless you do have a lot of rules/firewall rules/VLANs etc, then it could def be a pain

    • UDMP - UCG Fiber. Backup restore worked for me too. But was prepared for the worst. Learnt long ago never to trust migrations to go as expected.

        UDMP -> UCG Fiber

Do you consider this upgrade or downgrade?

        • +1

          Sidegrade

Sigh, the world is telling me to buy this.

  • What’s the practical purpose of this?

Many routers have 2.5Gbit LAN which will work with NBN 2Gbit I assume

The main idea of this router is that it belongs to the Ubiquiti ecosystem, where you can manage the access points, switches, cameras, doorbells, router, and everything else from a single panel. It also includes many features that entry-level routers, such as TP-Link models, do not offer.

Your probably wanting this for the network management and in-built security features. Most the UCG range have IPS/IDS so that traffic is inspected for nasties.

Not sure if other routers offer functions like this.

If your happy with gig or lower, check out the cheaper UCG range.

      • Aw right, sounds more closer to enterprise level than consumer

Good if people want/need that and decent having built in NVR functionality so you don’t need a dedicated NVR or self managed on a NAS. Wish more routers had that, a cheap 4 bay RAID USB NAS as an NVR and NAS solution in one beats needing a dedicated NVR and a NAS separately

(You can self host NVR, there’s solutions available, but no support and it’s very DIY and clunky)

  • People who are upgrading, are there any issues to watch out for with older models for those of us not pushing past gigabit speeds?
I'd like to host a VPN endpoint on a separate vlan, and would also like to have a completely separate vlan for the kids devices that might be running software I don't trust (ideally with some bandwidth throttling).

  • Playing devils advocate here, an alternative and cheaper setup would be to buy something like this and load pfsense (or even opnsense) onto it, bare metal or virtualized. I prefer pfsense over Ubiquiti for edge devices.

pfSense is arguably the more enterprise solution with better reliability and is almost bug-free. Configurability is endless and as flexible as you need it to be. You get better hardware overall in a similar form-factor as well.

    • it costs more though

      • only slightly more for the lowest base model with ram/ssd

  • Delivery was essentially next day, great experience. Set up by restoring and boom working as it should.
