Special Gift Cards No Longer Sells Woolworths Special Gift Cards?

Got targeted with a 10% cashback offer and went to buy a Woolies gift card, but it appears that they no longer sell it?

Has anyone bought Supermarket Slayer and used it at Coles/Woolies/Aldi? I get no results when I check their featured retailers section.

Supermarket Slayer worked at Coles for me so I assume with will work at the other majors.

I wonder if it works at Costco.

I couldn't find the Woolies card on their site as well but it is still available on their app.

    • Don't see the Woolies card in the app either?

Maybe it has also been removed since you posted?

  • Wait there's a supermarket slayer gift card? Learnt something new!
Odd that Coles, Woolies, Aldi and IGA don't work in the retailer search

Yes, there is a generic catch all gift card for supermarkets called Supermarket Slayer.

ALDI, Coles and Woolworths are included.

No, it isn't clear which stores are included and which are not.

From a personal perspective, I know they work for (in addition to the aforementioned 3 big ones) Trims Fresh, Jia Yuan and Tong Li.

Proof for anyone who still has doubts.

One thing that's worth noting: ALDI does not allow split transactions, while Coles and Woolworths do.

To make the most of the gift card, you have to have at least one store you shop at regularly where you can use up the last few dollars/cents at the end, otherwise you're partially squandering the discounted price of the gift card in the first place.

E.g. you may shop at ALDI with this card for most stuff, but once you're down to the last bit, you have to buy something like milk from a Coles, Woolworths or other place that allows split transactions.

ALDI should allow split payments at checkouts operated by a dedicated staff member if you pay with cash or an ALDI gift card first, then charge the remaining amount owed to one Visa/Mastercard/eftpos card.

The other thing to note about using Supermarket Slayer gift cards at ALDI is that it will incur the 0.5% payment surcharge, as Supermarket Slayer gift cards only operate on the Mastercard network (and ALDI surcharges any payments routed through the Mastercard network). Remember to factor that in if you are trying to use every last cent on a Supermarket Slayer gift card at ALDI.

      • I noticed that BigW gift cards have been removed from Special.gift also. BigW was my route to buy discounted Amazon gift cards.

There's an American Express 10% (up to $20) credit deal on my essentials card atm.

Anyone know whether BigW falls under MCC 5411?

Special gift cards with the Woolworths, BIG W, BWS and Dan Murphy's branding were all removed from the Special website at the same time.

Does BIG W still sell Amazon gift cards? I have visited three stores recently and none of them had them in stock. GCDB also thinks BIG W no longer stocks them.

BIG W should be assigned MCC 5331 (Variety Stores). I am not sure whether any of the Special category gift cards (e.g. Tech Head, Aussie Explorer) work at MCC 5331.

          • @WookieMonster: Thanks WM, it'd a sad day if BigW no longer sells Amazon GCs. That was the last remaining route to discounted Amazon GCs that I know of

I think it is still worth checking out the BIG W store(s) near you, because you never know, it may be a store that still has Amazon gift cards.

Amazon (physical) gift cards appear to be still available at some service stations, which means you could use a Special Aussie Explorer gift card as a payment method:

              • Shell Reddy Express - if you scan a Flybuys card during the purchase, you should earn 1 point per $2 spent.

              • United Petroleum - I saw some Amazon gift cards for sale at one earlier this week.

Ampol Foodary used to sell them, but it looks like you cannot purchase them anymore.

GCDB suggests 7-Eleven, EG Ampol, OTR and bp sell them as well, so you may have some luck there too.

      • Hi, do you know if the supermarket slayer card can be used on the WW gift card website? Thanks.

        • I am not sure for certain, but I would be quite surprised if it worked.

The gift card section of the Woolworths website stopped selling gift cards recently, but before that happened, that website used MCCs that were not officially allowed

I have not tried to use a Special gift card on the new Everyday Gifting store, but I am skeptical it would for a couple of reasons:

          • The Everyday Gifting store is hosted on the Everyday Rewards website, rather than the Woolworths website, so it is very unlikely the company managing Woolworths' online payment processing for that store would categorise that as a supermarket.

          • When I made a transaction on an Everyday Gifting partner portal recently, the MCC for the Mastercard transaction was 5947 (Card, Gift, Novelty, and Souvenir Shops), which is used by a number of other gift card portals. I would be extremely surprised if MCC 5947 was permitted on the Supermarket Slayer gift card, as the Special website says only MCC 5411 is supported. PayPal was not available at that time, so I could not test that…

    • lol … neighbor … loved that Trims Fresh … everything there ! Jia Yuan rather pricey compared to TongLi

  • Hey Wookie, so is it unclear if any of the Special gift cards work with Big W anymore

I am not sure whether any of the Special gift cards currently for sale on the Special website work at BIG W.
