Tyre Recommendations for Cerato GT

I've done 35K kilometres on the original Michelin PS4 tyres that came with my Cerato GT and they're about done. I'm looking for four replacement tyres, but I'm chasing something that is:

  • Quieter
  • Similar wet grip/braking levels
  • Longer life
  • Better economy

I don't drive particularly aggressively…

Seems like the Michelin Primacy 5 might fit the bill. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Not so worried about price, they all seem around $1k for four.

Maybe a set of Michelin tyres would fit the bill.

    • Not sure why the above member was negged? I too would recommend Michelin, yes they're pricey but have an excellent combination of features which when you price out over their lifespan - tends to in my very limited experience compare well on a per km basis against cheaper tyres.

The primacy range sounds better suited as the OP suspects to their needs than the PS range. Wait for a decent promo and get them. Also worth noting Michelin specifically recommends retaining their tyres down to the 1.5mm wear markers and have tested stating their performance in the wet does not significantly suffer before this.

Good insight. The primacy range is for when you want a tyre that is good at everything.

The neg is probably just from some tool who's angle on the topic is very 2 dimensional.

  • Have you gone on specific tyre sites that give a rundown on matches to your vehicle ?
    Give that a try !

  • Poke the tyre size you have now, into tyroola. Check out the reviews, the prices, tread pattern, and the brand. Make a short list. Most have multiple ratings from longevity, to road noise, braking, wet weather performance etc.

Then once you choose the tyre you want choose a tyre fitter near you and order your preferred brand in.

Or if you want to follow the procedure on tyroola and be directed to a fitter, go down that road.

Then why buy the GT variant?

Just get some Turanza Serenity Plus if you drive it like a baby.

    • GT spec has better features, but mainly it's the two kids in the back who slow me down

    • It's only a warm hatch/sedan. Good choice if you want something that isnt gutless and looks nice with good features.

Nothing beats driving a slow turbo car fast with grippy tyres and half decent suspension.

        • +1

Perfect fun car that doesn’t become a go directly to jail offence to quick.

        • VW GTI?

        • Dont even really need a turbo. Slow car driven hard can be lots of fun.

          • @Euphemistic: Especially on bald tyres

          • +1

@Euphemistic: Fair. But it definitely needs to be manual then.

            • +2

@MS Paint: Definitely three pedals. Auto sucks for 'spirited driving'. Even an auto with manual mode isnt great.

About 15y ago I had a 91 corolla hatch that cost $1400. It was a hoot to drive in an urban environment. Could wring its neck and not break the speed limit by much. Was nice and light to throw around and the old tyres and worn shocks meant you needed to be aware of traction limits. Only sold it because thet were theeatening to drop 91 octane fuel - and it didnt have AC.

    • Just get some Turanza Serenity Plus if you drive it like a baby.

Is this the Camry of tyres? I always get this because I don't know what else to choose.

      • +2

Pardon the pun but yes these tyres are a good all rounder. Just like a Camry I guess, good at everything but excellent at nothing.

Get some used tyres from a tyre shop and use an angle grinder to carve out some fresh grooves!

    • tyre shops hate this one trick

  • Quieter and longer life probably dont go well together. Longer lasting will be a harder compound that will likely make more noise.

All tyres are a compromise between factors. Noise, grip, longevity, pick any two.

    • Tread pattern plays a role too.

Primacy is a good one for day to day.

      • The three factor thing is overly simplified, but it demonstrates that its a balancing act between factors. In the sports world the three factors are light, strong, cheap. Pick two.

For tyres you simply cannot have ultimate grip with long wearng tyres. Yes, you can have pretty good grip with pretty long life tyres, but somthing else will be a compromise - often price.

  • Serenity plus, with 50000km guarantee

  • Continental Contact5

    • Isn't that a performance tyre similar to Michelin ps5?

  • PS4 and only 35k?
    I got 70k out of my ps5

    • Thats wild. I've nearly finished my PS4 with about 14,000km on them

  • primacy would be a good alternative. Or just any eco version of a good brand. All performance tyres will be noisy and wear faster.

  • Michelin Primacy are a Touring focussed tyre. I had the Primacy HP on the Octavia and they were very good. They lasted 70k km IIRC.

    Quieter

    YES

    Similar wet grip/braking levels

Not as good as the PS4 but still better than many others.

    Longer life

Yes, 30%-50% better life than PS4

    Better economy
Slightly but I doubt a meaningful amount. About as good as Stop/Start helps. The only path to better economy is a Low Rolling Resistance tyre and there are usually grip & braking trade-offs.

Regarding noise. Did you do a cross-rotaion of the tyres every 10k km? It really helps with noise & even wear.
