Flybuys Travel Closing Down

I have been using Flybuys Travel for many years to pay for hotel accommodation. I was sad to see it is closing at the end of September.
I know you can transfer points to virgin but most hotels are at least 50 percent more than Flybuys (taking the conversion rate into account). What are my options to continue to take holidays with little to no out of pocket expense?

Maybe you were their only customer.

Considering you need to spend $20k a month to get $100 FBP, would take awhile to get a holiday for most people.
I do for work but use the flybuys for Coles mostly.

Sure if you are just collecting points by buying groceries at Coles it would take forever.
There are loads of other ways to earn points. I average about $2000 worth of points a year.

Plenty of ppl spend much less to get that amount of points with bonus offers

Its not hard with multiple cards, splitting shopping and maximising your bonuses. 10x officeworks bonus too if you have home business. I made over 100k points from this, this year.

  • Managed to pool over $3k in FBP with the plan to pay for accommodation for 3 week europe trip next year. This is a bummer

    • Are the points more valuable when redeemed for travel than when redeemed at Coles?

      • Likely thats my way out. To buy groceries and save the grocery money for holiday.

    • Can you book in advance? It's not the end of September yet.

  • Yes sad to see it go as I sometimes use it to buy cash fares if there's no good cashback deals

If you can't pay for flights any longer with Flybuys then they need to change their name.

You can can still exchange point to velocity 2 to 1 but the value isnt there. And exchange for hotel gift cards but their prices are not competitive. I feel cheated.

  • Not any loss. Their lowest ever Travel was far more expensive than found in a basic online search and I have been looking for years. Scoot and Agoda destroy them for eg.

Convert to groceries and put the $ value into a holiday saver acc

  • I've previously used them for hotels overseas for excess Flybuys and their prices were always on par or a tad higher than other booking sites. At least it didn't impact the cashflow.

Thanks for the post OP. I though the same thing when I got the email. I have used them for years too. Sometimes that have good prices that beat going directly through the airlines. I was saving my points for flights mid next year. Will have to cash them out for something else
