LUGGAGE - the awesome ones with the swivel wheels that you can just wheel along next to you

I'm sick of lugging around my heavy suitcase while I'm away. When I used to work as a baggage handler the highlight of my day would be when we get a suitcase with the swivel wheels that you just give a big shove and they go rolling down the alley for about 15 metres.

Anyway, has anyone seen any good luggage deals for these. I've heard they can be had reasonably cheap at K-Mart, but they need to be decent quality as well. The number of handles and wheels that snap off is crazy. I need a large one for all my stuff and a small one to carry with me on the plane.

Thanks guys! These forums are awesome :D

  • If my incredibly long winded title didn't make sense, Something like this is what I'm chasing..

  • I don't know any specific deals, but a bunch of people went for this when it was going: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/65512 (expired now though, so not really helpful!)

The last time I went into a luggage store i noticed the Paclite and Samsonite "featherlight" series (or whatever its called) and they were indeed amazingly light - i think one was 1.2kg for carry-on and the bigger one wasn't much more. I didn't buy, and haven't had these brands, so cant comment on quality/durability.

One place to check prices is http://www.bagnbaggage.com.au/travel.html - which is showing this on 'sale' (below rrp, but not sure if cheapest or not) Myer/DJ also stock these types of cases, may be worth checking out if they have a sale.

  • http://luggagedirect.com.au/ are also pretty good. Free delivery and 8% pricebeat too.

  • Aldi had them about a year ago for about $200 for a large and a medium case. Got them reduced to clear $99.
Keep an eye on group buying sites, ebay deals and Aldi.

  • Cheers for the comments, very helpful so far. Though I'm in W.A. so that makes it harder. They really need to open up some Aldi stores here.

  • I currently have the large Samsonite B-Lite on layby. I don't need it any time soon, but after the last time I travelled, with one of the old style cases with rollers built into one end, I resolved to buy a decent suitcase. That thing weighed a ton, even though the scales said just 15kg. I think its supposed RRP is around $400, but the place I have mine, and many sites on the net are offering it for around $239 or there abouts. Some offer free shipping.
    There's one here:

    http://theluggageprofessionals.com.au/brands-category/samson…

The 79 cm bag is just 2.7 kg. We also looked at a Jeep branded hard case with the swivel wheels that was about $50 less. Although it was promoted as a light model (around 1kg more) I got the impression the studs holding the handles on were a potential weak spot.

I'm curious to know from anyone who already has cases with swivel wheels though - how do they generally fare with the treatment given by airport baggage handlers?

    • +1

I took my large suitcase on 24 flights last year and it's fine, no signs of damage at all.

  • Or one of these for $179

Will be going on 4 trips this year

I remember the frustrations I've had with a shitty bag

    It will drive you nuts!

  • I bought an American Tourister Prismo small carry-on spinner suitcase and took it with me for 3.5 months to Hawai'i and throughout Western Europe and the UK.

I did a lot of research before buying it. I wanted a large, light carry-on that would comply to most airlines' restrictions (size and weight), that would be slash-proof if i left it attached to a hostel or hotel bed.

It has stood up really well, although one of the four wheels became a bit bunged up from all the cobblestone streets.

I bought it from Bagworld online, sent over from Perth. Arrived in a few days. Service was very good and I'd buy from them again.

    +1 for Bagworld - http://www.bagworld.com.au/

Seeing as you are in Perth you can visit them in the Hay St Mall. I usually find they have the cheapest prices and you can often find 5-10% off coupons online as well, they also have free delivery.

  • I have asked a similar question and have some good sharing. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83145
Anyhow, having just came back from holidays, I think the 4-wheel swivel ones have one fundamental problem: the wheels are far too small. It is ok when you are in a nice airport with nice floor. The problem comes when you have to lug between say your coach to the hotel, or worst still, across the road. I really fear the little wheels will go off hence have not found any.

    • Cheers for the link. Yeah those tiny wheels are really not designed for going "off-road" hey. They need to make some big chunky wheels for all areas access. Not very practical with the weight and dimensions, but would still be cool

  • Peters of Kensington has very good deals on Delsey / Antler and other premium brands. They will deliver if you order on line.
If you don't mind a lime green colour there is this one: http://www.petersofkensington.com.au/Public/Delsey-U-Lite-Li… . Other colours are higher.
When you are in Peter's site, you can search by brand under Travel Cases.

  • I've a Samsonite Cosmolite and it's great. I bought this one because I don't want the weight of the bag consuming too much of my weight limit on the plane. After all, I want to be carrying around my clothes and shopping items, not just a suitcase!

look for lightweight spinners? No idea how much shipping is though, but let me know so I can consider ordering too =P

    • There's definitely some good deals on this page. 4 pc set for 100 bucks, nice. Not spinners tho. Free shipping on orders over $99 is a bonus too.

      • I don't think that applies to international orders

        • Oh. It's a U.S. site. Not so useful then.

  • Catch of the day has samsonite on special today.
