My partner needs to buy a one way ticket from Sydney to Haneda on 29th of october but nit a return leg. Its a lot cheaper to purchase a return ticket. Is it possible to book a ticket sydney to haneda, and then book a refundable return leg. Then just get a refund on the return leg? Does that then automatically increase the price of the sydney to haneda leg if i get a refund within days of purchasing? Or could they even cancel your entire ticket?

    • Jetstar sell more reasonable one way fares. Though to/from Narita rather than Haneda airport

    • +4

What's stopping you from just buying the return ticket, getting off at Haneda and not boarding the flight back.

For all they know, you missed your flight and found your own way back.

      • Because i am trying to see if i could have the return leg refunded.. so then it makes my partners fare cheaper.
Atm, it is a $15 difference between a one way and a return fare.

        • Ah yep! I gotcha. But seriously I don't think you will get your return leg refunded at all; if you were expecting to get half back because you only used one leg of a return ticket.

    CTS with this price? Bargain!

      And for snow season too!

      • +1

Snow season is a stretch. You might get to see snow, but if you’re going to ski…

So stupid that Star Alliance partners ANA and Virgin charge $1,000 extra for a connecting flight from Melbourne unlike JAL and Qantas who'll connect several Australian cities to Sydney for around $100. Does anyone know why?

    • Exactly, because of this reason went with Qantas sale.

    • VA aren't Star Alliance but your point still stands, it's ridiculous that you can add on a VA domestic flight for a reasonable price considering they're partners.

      • +1

        *cannot add on

      • +1

Oh. I didn't know that they are just friends with benefits, not members of Star Alliance.

  • +2

    Wheres Melbourne :(

    • +4

ANA doesnt operate into Melbourne - Virgin Australia only releases top fare Flexible Fares to ANA which are incredibly expensive and adds a lot onto your ticket cost

      • Interesting! What a shame

  • I never been to Japan, is it any recommend forum which has travel guides covers major cities?

    • +4

this is actually a pretty good resource with up to date information. the users who lurk there are miserable, but informative for the most part. as a rule of thumb, spend 3 days per city and choose your itinerary based on what you want to see. this website is great to find things to see/do.

once you have a draft itinerary sorted, compare it with others online, book your flights, then book your accommodation. i suggest using booking.com and taking advantage of the ability to cancel your booking right up until the day before to adjust your itinerary if needed.

for transport, use trains when you can, and flights/buses/taxis when you have to

this deal finally pushed me over the inspiration edge to take the family on a mid-may trip.
$4k for the 4 of us, Syd->Osaka (via HND), then Tokyo (HND)->Syd

now for the expensive and time consuming bit, spending the next months working out itineraries and accom/activity costs :)

  • Am I reading this listing right? It says Sydney to Tokyo 4-18 Nov is $887, but then when going thru the link and selecting ANA at the end, the price becomes $954? It's showing the smaller companies like Aunt Betty at $887…

    • +5

OTAs have slightly discounted pricing by airlines - however DO NOT purchase through ANY website other than directly with the airline, OTAs are a pain in the ass to deal with, very expensive cancellation and change options and is just a toxic load of shit

      • +1

Thank you, I will definitely keep in mind.

I just checked ANA website directly and it says $954 again. Is anyone able to advise what I am missing? OP says it's actually supposed to be $881 (not $887 either lol)

        • +2

You're not missing anything. OP has given the best available price, which happens to be through an OTA. The price to book direct through the airline is $954

          • +1

@CheapFlightHunter: Ohh I see I had thought that all of these prices were for ANA only. Thank you

  • Is stopover in Tokyo allowed for CTS?

  • Flights booked! Thanks!

  • Would you choose SIA (A380, 787-10, A350) over ANA (789) if price and travel time differential isn't much?

I've flown on SIA (on an A380) before but not ANA. So curious if it's worth paying slightly more on SIA (and yes, a few hours longer travel time)

    • ANA and SIA are pretty much top tier carriers. Go with whichever is cheaper/quicker.

SIA might be a premium carrier, and Changi might be the best airport, but it is very expensive with the piss weak AUD.

  • Seems the sale is over?
