This previously popular CPU is back on sale and while it's a couple of dollars more than the all time low you can join Team OzBargain and get 7% back on your purchase as AliExpress shopping credit. I personally have received 3 of these from previous deals and they've all been flawless.

It features 8 cores, 16 threads, base clock of 3.4GHz, boost clock of 4.6GHz with a default TDP of 65W. As usual if you're upgrading from 2xxx or 3xxx ensure you update your motherboard's BIOS first before installation.

AU$ based on current Mastercard rate, GST inclusive and does not stack with TCB/CR/SB shopback. Since this is a Big Save limited deal, coupons are not redeemable either.

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

Only 5? Obviously a new Ozbargainer.

Still sitting pretty with my 3600 and 3060ti combo, but I'm very tempted to jump the fence now. Do you think the 3060ti will become a bottleneck? I don't plan to do a major upgrade for at least a couple of years.

    • +1

You have to state what you use your pc for

      • Oops, yes of course. A mix of gaming and productivity, with occasional video editing. Gaming is mostly FHD or 1440p (older gen titles). Nothing competitive. Only considering an upgrade due to performance bottlenecks noted in more recent titles (2024 and after), otherwise I'm generally happy even if I'm not maxxing out settings.

        • +2

I'd budget for a new cooler though if you're using the AMD supplied cooler. I had issues with my 5600 onboard usb controller so i don't rate that series but it's a cheap enough upgrade.

    • +3

Your 3060 Ti will become the bottleneck in decent number of games and applications, but it won't be too noticeable.
5700X and 3060 Ti is a decent combo. I do tend to prefer the 5700X3D, though.

      • +3

5700 X3D is much better but the prices are just too high to spend that much on an old platform now.

        • +2

With used 5700x3ds going for $350, I’m tempted to downgrade.

          At 1440p a 3060ti would be the bottleneck, I’m still using a 3080 at 4K, I doubt I’d lose more than a few frames.

    • +2

A good rule of thumb: the lower your resolution, the more likely your CPU will hold things back - crank up the resolution, and it’s usually the GPU that becomes the limiting factor.

Essentially, do you believe your current CPU is keeping up to the GPU in the games you play? Do you think your GPU is compute or memory constrained?

      • +2

Never really felt that that the GPU was being stretched, mostly because as you rightly said, I'm limited by resolution (mostly FHD, occasionally 1440p for older gen titles). The only times I've actually felt that things are sluggish is when I'm using the system for video editing, playing a relatively new AAA title (2024 and after) or during Civ 6 / Civ 7 endgame. That's why I assumed that the CPU might be the limiting component at the moment

A 3600 to 5700x or even 5700x3d would be good enough for a few more years. At 1440p the 3060ti would definitely be bottlenecking your rig. I have an RX 6700XT and that feels like it's going to be the next thing to be replaced. FYI I replaced my 2600 with the x3d and the difference was night and day for games basically.

  • Will 3600 bottleneck 3080? Not sure if I should upgrade 3600 to 5700x

    • +2

Yes it will. I would upgrade. I’m going to upgrade my 3600 and I only have the 3070ti.

Got one on the last deal, comes in a bubble lined satchel, CPU held inside with the clam shell, clam shell wrapped in few layers of paper foam.

  • +1

Yeah if anyone has been on the fence about Aliexpress CPUs, I've had a positive experience running a 7700 - came well packaged, cpu working perfectly, temps look as expected etc

  • +1

What about my 3700x and rtx 3070 combo? Worth upgrading? Use pc for gaming slightly older titles and recording guitar plus basic video editing.

    • +1

Nah not really with a 3700X.

    this cpu is popular…? whyyyyy…

    • +5

Because it's amazing value for the price. There's nothing better this cheap on AM4.

      • -1

ahh ok so just at that price point

        • Yep, great value at that price.
Tempted to grab one to upgrade my 3600 even though I don't really need to.

    • +2

Lot of people using Am4 have ancient CPUs - I personally upgraded from a 1700x. All for the price of.. basically nothing.

    • +1

      Many reasons.

People with anything that's 8/16 and older - it's a cheap budget friendly upgrade vs buying a new board, RAM, spending more on the processor and potentially a new cooler.

AM4 boards are plentiful and cheaper then AM5
DDR4 was cheaper then DDR5, it's recently had a price surge due to supply/demand.

This is the whole reason why AMD is better long term though, someone with a 1600x or 1700x, or even a 3600x gets a very cheap upgrade for price / performance. It won't be as good as a 7700x or a 9800x3D, etc but you're talking a quarter of the total cost or less for a lot of people.

I personally went with this for my home server. Since I already had DDR4 spare and it's a lower TDP, it's already overkill. I also had a spare low end Ryzen on hand while I was waiting for this to arrive but it wasn't compatible with my board.

    • Your name checks out for asking this question…. 😂

    • You're right. Just can't do anything useful with 8 cores.

there are some fwits on this site - love the negs though!

    FFS missed it again!

The deal seems to repeat itself every ~fortnight, I was in the same boat 2 weeks ago. Just keep an eye out and subscribe for notifications the next time the 5700x is listed in a deal. (You can do this by searching 5700x up in the top right, and then clicking "subscribe".

SZCPU aliexpress store has it for AUD $107.53 +$2.55 shipping if anyone's interested.
