Qantas Frequent Flyer Points Devalued as Airline Rolls Out Changes to Loyalty Program

Unlucky to all those FF points chasers!

The changes mean a Classic Rewards economy seat on a Qantas service between Sydney and Melbourne has increased from 8,000 points plus $55 in fees to 9,200 points plus $55 in fees.

Qantas Frequent Flyer Points Further Devalued as Airline Rolls Out Changes to Loyalty Program

    FTFY.

Not that the points were particularly valued prior to today. Unless you run a business and/or have status, you're lucky if you can use them, paying $$$ in extra fees for the privilege.

    • We don’t have a business, nor status and can’t get cards because we are retired. However last year we used Velocity points for Qatar Qsuite business from Melbourne to Paris and used Qantas points to come back economy from Vienna to Dubai then first/business from Dubai to Sydney then Virgin credit card money from Sydney to Melbourne. Yes the fees are high but very good value for the class of travel.

In our case the secret was flying out September 11 and then back early November. You have to be very flexible then do the due diligence determining the right flights to take.

I remember years ago they interviewed the No 1 card holder for Qantas frequent flyer , who had done millions of miles over the years, he was in his 90s. They asked him for advice on how best to use frequent flyer and his response was, “Always remember that your frequent flyer points balance is worth nothing until you spend them”

All of these rewards programs are just scams now anyway.

It used to be a "thing" to get into business class lounges for airlines, now go and look at who is in there, everyone and their grandma. The fact that you can get access just by having a credit card with a free access just devalues it entirely.

I've gotten more value out of QFF by selling the points to people than using them myself.

Keep devaluing and driving away the masses thinking 'its a scam'. Opens up more opportunities!

  • It’s just a quasi-currency, that is controlled by its creators. How you earn it and how you spend it denotes its value to you.
It’s a bit silly to be outraged by it, if your going to participate in trading it, you should go into it knowing it’s a money making scheme that is controlled by its creators.
The cost of the points is a component of the price you pay for goods and services that give you the “free” points.

Point Hacks values Qantas points at 1.9c each which makes the Melbourne to Sydney reward flight $231.

The starting cash fare is lower than $231 which makes the Point Hacks valuation a joke.

All depends how you use them, many flights are negative value - International business exceeds that valuation especially if you need a one-way flight.

I can't remember the last time I saw an international business reward to a place and date I wanted to travel. In my view 1.9c is a hypothetical valuation.

I booked a one way Sydney to London yesterday on BA for June next year - They are around but you really have to know and work the program to extract the max value.

          • @Ynk: Was it for two people? Those don’t exist so my friends tell me, lucky I’m a solo traveller

            • @Onemoredeal: No one person, agree almost impossible for 2!

              • @Ynk: I feel bad for those mums and dads that save up a million points thinking they can just ring up and book whatever they want in the nose for the family, then reality sets in.

        • The value is between .3c-8c
It how you use them, you don’t have to fly Qantas or even in Australia.

Point Hacks is a rubbish website that just wants to sell you points - they just make up a valuation that helps them to do this.

  • Eh, doesn't really change much for me.

Still highly worth chasing them - easily can make 50% profit off them.

    • +1

how do you make 50% profit off them?

    Leaks our info
    runs anti competitive ghost flights
    devalues our points
introduces classic plus seats which are terrible value
witholds classic rewards seats knowing they'll just devalue the shit out of them going forward.

It's a false economy now that their FF offshoot is literally taking the piss.

Government has to actually support someone other than the joke that is Qantas.

Gets huge government bailouts, but gives away no equity in exchange

      • Albo and Co all get free lifetime Qantas loung passes though. She'll be right, mate.
