  • Is Bali worth going to?

I’ve been to Thailand and enjoyed it however always been unsure if Bali would be nice

    • +2

It's nice if you visit the more Balinese areas where tourists don't go. If you just stay in the usual locations, it's dreadful though - it attracts the worst type of tourists.

    • +2

Depends on budget / where you stay and what you intend on doing. Bali is incredibly congested in the popular areas, much more so than Thailand. I feel you get an overall better experience in other Asian destinations where it's less busy or there's better infrastructure. If I had to choose I'd take Thailand every time.

    • ubud is ok for a few days. bali is like thailand except you stay in your hotel (for a good reason). if you enjoyed thailand, id highly recommend cambodia

under 5 hour flight with Jetstar…. 12 hour + flight with Virgin… It's just not worth the 7 hours extra from Adelaide to Bali.

    • When you factor in the extra delays, cancellations and frustrations with Jetstar, then it is worth it…

      • +1

When adding an extra leg, you are amplifying the chances of getting caught with a delay or cancellation.

Just looking at the BITRE domestic (May 25) statistics, VA is only slightly ahead of JQ with 0.8% of flights cancelled compared to 1.3% and 84.8% of flights arriving on time compared to 81.5%.

In the past couple of years VA has been losing market share to JQ as their products are too similar (VA only providing free tea and coffee, and stream to you own device IFE), jet usually charging way more for the service. VA also uses the 737, which is narrower that the a320 (3.53m vs 3.7m), which results in more rubbing of fellow passengers shoulders.

        • (May 25) statistics

          It's now August.

          • @jv: You can't get statistics more recent than may 2025. You'll need a time machine for that.

            • -1

@Pcoder: If they are historical, then you can…

              • @jv: Just look at the Jetstar flight on flightaware, in the past, in the past 11 flights JQ125 has arrived either slightly before or after its usual arrival time of 10.10am. Its latest is only 22 minutes late but it's earliest has been 41 minutes early.

                These are very good statistics.

The only advantage in doing the VA flight is if you are chasing VA status.

Edit: Looking at the return JQ126 flight, there was only 1 flight that was a few hours late, most of the other flights were close to the standard 5.30pm arrival.

                • -1

                  @Pcoder: That's not my experience with them…

                  • @jv: I'm not sure Virgin will be much better, checking a few of the flights out of Melbourne (eg: VA91 etc) and there are several flights that are an hour plus late.

As someone who travels a bit, adding more connecting legs will usually works out worse for delays then ones without.

      • I mean I've done Jestar to Japan and Bali a few times… Had zero issues.
