    That's some pretty awesome speeds.

Still amazing that gigabit connection is still such an expensive and recent thing. Elsewhere in the world gigabit has been around for more than a decade and costs $20 a month unlimited. Thanks a lot NBN co.

    • Showing my age here, but i can remember paying $60 a month for a 500mb wireless plan on 2G (+ cost of the dongle) and how good that was.
Even before this time, i was on dial up and a mates uncle who was doing something in IT, had a HFC connection that cost some crazy amount, in awe of how fast a webpage would load.
Lol…. back in the day. Crazy how tech has progressed in the last 30 years!

It's wild that I can now download the entire monthly data allowance of my first 256k internet connection in the time it takes to type 'data cap'

          • @serpserpserp: I think my first dialup connection was uncapped data but only 20 hours a month.

            • @Brobert: yeah I never saw data caps until ADSL & cable

            • @Brobert: Hmmm I think I am mistaken. I had hour caps. But I also knew my system admin at my local ISP and he told me he would disconnect people that were just constantly maxing out their connection over a few hours. I think their uplink connection could only handle about 20 modems going flat out

          • @serpserpserp:

To download a 100 MB file using a 28.8 kbps dial-up connection with the ZMODEM protocol, which typically achieves around 90% transfer efficiency, it would take approximately 8 hours and 47 minutes.

that's probably why my ISP had time limits instead. that was like 3 South Park.episodes!

      and these magical places?

  • IPv6?

Cheap but reading up about CGNat - sounds like could be a pain depending on who else you're sharing the IP address with.

    • +3

not really, it's a pain for gaming, torrenting and not practical if you're hosting a server/service. There's a fair bit of BS by self a proclaimed experts, who aren't.

Having said that, I like a static IP.

    • The majority of people aren't hosting their own website. Typical use case, CGNAT is fine. And no one IP bans anymore. It's 2025.

  • How are they offering 1000/100 when it hasn’t been released yet?

    • Probably taking a small loss for a month with the idea of keeping customers longer term?

    • The ISP purchases 1000/400 from nbn and the ISP turns it into 1000/100.

      • The wholesale price for 1000/400 is $125. Does that mean they will lose nearly $30 per month, and continue incurring this loss for six months?

        • They lose $27 for 1 month per customer. 1000/100 wholesale is around $74/m starting mid September.

      • +1

        Can’t order 1000/400 on HFC….
So not sure what they are doing here

        • True. Yeah I was talking about FTTP.

          • +1

@Twix: Ok. All the CIS and order documents say 50-100 mbs.
My guess is On HFC you would be on 50mbs max for the first month.

does CGNat cause problems with pings in online gaming?

    • often.

      • So the solution is perm IP?

    • It depends on the game, definitely causes issues on consoles.
It's not just pings. The more concerning part is that it can impact your ability to match/connect to games and other players.

Everyone on 1000/50 gets moved to 1000/100 in a month.

nbn 1000/50 $85/M for 6 months (new customers) @ Superloop.
nbn 1000/50 $99/M for 12 months (new customers) @ Leaptel.
1 Month Free (new customers) & nbn 1000/50 $99/M Ongoing @ Buddy Telco (Aussie Broadband).

  • mmm maybe ill try this

  • +1

haven't signed up with them….but something i can appreciate about their site is they clearly show all the plans and options, and they don't ask for your address first to find out what they can offer you.

  • We received an offer from CBA for $50 off NBN from "More" for 36 months. Brings down the price to $50/mth for 500/50 nbn. Has anyone used More? It seems like a good deal, but not sure about locking in for 3 years.

    • +1

Been using it about an year for CBA deal and it's not great but cheap. Speed is unreliable and inconsistent.

      • Great, thanks - that's really helpful.

  • +1

No option for removing CGNat or adding a static IP kills it.

    • +1

90% of people paying for speed that high care so its a bit silly

  • Warning all. The Quokka is vulnerable as the population is decreasing. Keep that in mind.
