Cheaper Alternative to Replacing Skoda Kamiq Spare Key

i lost my spare key fob for my 2021 skoda kamiq, the dealer is charging $800 dollars to replace the key. Is there a way I can just buy a used kamiq key and get that reprogrammed by someone?

the local key reprogammers all said they cant do it for 2020+ models

  • Is it keyless start, or key start?

    • keyless push button

  • Have a chat to your local locksmith and auto electrician for quotes.

    • local locksmiths said they cant do it :(

      • Have you tried the car key specialists that only do vehicle keys? Krazy Keys, Eurotronics, Reids Remotes, etc?

Put an AirTag keyring on your second key.

Doesn't look like you can self-program cheap keys with a weird door open and close dance like some Toyotas.

  • the dealer is charging $800 dollars to replace the key

    🤣

Seems like they are not interested in repeat customers…

    • That's about what vw quoted me for a replacement of my lost fob , what are you smoking JV ⁉️

They cost < $5 to manufacture.

      • Bought a key with transponder pre cut from China a couple years ago for wife's Audi for $15 free postage.

A specialist key cutter 30 minutes away (this is in regional Victoria where we don't have as many options) he programmed it for $150 my local locksmith wouldnt touch it as specialised software required.

Was quoted $860 through Local VW dealer. So yes dealers do lose out on repeat customers.

        • Could you please tell us which website you got the pre cut key with transponder from china? I assume ali express?

Seek advice from some of the wayward youth in Melbourne's western suburbs - seems like they do not need keys at all to open/start any make of car

On first glimpse, I thought Pam had changed cars.

  • isnt this something you can do with an OBDeleven tool - im assuming its the programming thats the hard part of the process. Im sure a local indy could do it if you had the key and fob?

Edit: i take it back apparently you cant… all i can say is shop around between dealers too… they aint all the same pricing

Trade the car in for one with 2 keys?

I am pretty sure if it has a manual key thats gonna be cheap but I think for some reasons car manufacturers charge a pretty penny for the programming of keys and i mean the codes etc they supply for the key. locksmith has to pay them their fees.

Had to pay around $650 for an Octavia key a couple of years ago through the dealer. Couldn't find a cheaper alternative and yes put an airtag on the second key straight away! Waited ages for it to be done too, had to come from Europe

  • Look f9r local car key specialists. I was facing $650 - local guys black hatted it for $300. Not an original looking key but decent.

  • You can buy fobs off Aliexpress cheap, then just take it to a locksmith or Mr Minit and ask for a quote. Probably around $150-$200 just for the programming but I am sure it could be cheaper if you hunt around.

  • I’d try taking it to a local auto-electrical place, with the hope being they might know the OBD-II method of re-learning ‘keys’ and could help out with that.

You might still need to contact the dealer to get the security PIN, and they’d likely make that a bit painful, like you needing to go in in-person with proof of ownership, and paying some nominal fee..
You can sometimes buy those PINs through other online dealers with access to the Skoda network, it’s what I did with a Hyundai recently.

Once you’ve got the PIN and ODB-II it’s normally pretty straight forward. Just need all the ‘keys’ you care about with you, any others get de-registered.

You need a specialist key cutter like this mob,

    Replacementcarkeys.com.au

    https://share.google/0vfkdFeKYHUTCmLgj

    "Lost or Misplaced Skoda Keys.
Each Skoda key needs to have data precoded to it before it’s able to be programmed. There’s also a 4 to 5 digit PIN that acts as a password to protect your vehicle from less experienced Automotive Locksmiths. Luckily, Replacement Car Keys have specialised equipment which can extract the coding from your vehicle. This means we can program your Skoda keys on the spot".

  • Try these guys https://www.thekeyguys.com.au/

They sell tools to make keys, they will guide you to your local key specialist.

  • Once you get a new key, buy a Flipper Zero to record the information for a rainy day

  • I was in Oruro, Bolivia a short while ago. There were key copiers on most corners in the markets. They could copy ANY key, including electronic car keys for just $5.
