$618.30 AUD if you book directly through Hainan Airlines' Website

NEVER EVER USE AN OTA - always book direct, saves you money on any pre purchased excess luggage, seating reservations, easier change and modification options and instant e-ticketing without any issues

Wouldn't you get a reservation or ticket number from the OTA and use that to order add-ons on the airline's website directly?

I did that with Trip.com and Jetstar and had no issues

    • $70 for each leg for seat choice on Cathay Pacific when booking directly with them. Where are the savings?

      • +4

If you need to change flights, cancel flights you will not have egregious fees that an OTA will impose

OTAs take up to 48 hours and in some of my cases 11 days to even process the ticket itself - through the airline directly it will be instant - avoiding an issue where the fare has sold out and them having to cancel or charge you additional funds to cover the cost

        • +1

Sounds like you were probs using a crap OTA (there are a few bad ones)

Aunt Betty/Trip.com/mytrip all fine in my books

          • @blighst: Trip.com was horrible. I repeat, horrible.

In 2020 - and probbaly now - they didnt have any online customer service or phone line. Rather they would direct all enquiries to a generic email address.

I recognise people look for saving everywhere they can, but this is not one of them. When things go wrong, its just not worth it.

@Unseatingcargo1: Hmm, I've dealt with Trip multiple times lately - live chat option was very good, they were able to communicate on my behalf to a Japanese hotel to resolve issues. I'd go to the degree to say they were the best CS wise (though again, it's a shortfall of the OTAs generally, and if you expect CS, then it's not for you).

            • @Unseatingcargo1: When I had an issue with my hotel reservation via Trip.com, I used the online chat and found Trip.com to be very helpful. They promptly credited points to my account, which significantly exceeded the cost of the issue. I then used these points to purchase some other stuff that I needed.

@Unseatingcargo1: Trip.com was fantastic earlier in the year. Had some queries around a small tour I had booked and they pretty much dealt with the operator directly to sort out any details I needed. Also booking a Chinese domestic flight with them provided better notifications than the actual provider.

      Lol

OTAs are fine if you know their shortcomings. True ozbargainers will know on average you end up ahead.

      • +2

Couldn't disagree more. Only takes one bad experience to realise you can end up far worse off with OTAs

        • +2

          On average

    • What's OTA

      • +1

Online travel agent. I.e. Not booking with the airline direct

    • A simple search on any of the above dates is returning an error!! Can you please share a link if possible?

  • Massive layovers on the return leg though?

    • +14

It's easier if you think of a long layover as part of the holiday

      • What's transit to and from Haikou airport like?

        • +2

I just spent two weeks there. It's an island paradise. First time I have seen Japan toilets in the airport

  • 18hrs !!!

    Hainan wings take flight,
    Haikou whispers on the breeze,
    Osaka awaits.

this was one of the math question during my HSC exam.

So 1/2 the cost but twice the travel time.. I guess it might work for some but still, such a waste of time getting somewhere (it's like flying to Sydney from Melbourne via Perth)

  • Do you need powerbank CCC for this?

  • Hainan chicken. Mmmmm yummmm

Please don’t book through smartfares.com. I just got scammed by them. First of all the price listed is lower than the amount you get charged. Because they charge in usd dollar and they are using some inaccurate conversion rate. And then you get charged extra seat booking even though you have ticked no extra option.

On the confirmation page after you make payment. It mention that they cant confirm the flight and ask to ring them. So i rang them they want an additional 360 usd on top of the ticket i have paid. I checked the carrier website directly and the same itinerary ticket still exist with the same cost. I ended up paying it because cancellation would've cost the same and i wasn’t sure if was going to get refunded.

I want flight website should remove them your list. Definitely the worst ticket booking experience.

    • Have heard dodgy things about these guys — note that skyscanner and momondo don't link to them either.

Good news is this deal looks like you have options of a few decent OTAs at the low price.

    • +1

I recommend avoiding them too. Found them on IWTF as they were one of the few OTAs I could book flights to Moscow through last month. But at the end saw they were charging USD rather than the AUD they were quoting (and the rate they displayed was unatailable by a large margin), dodgy looking website too. Ended up booking through Jetabroad.
