[Switch, PC, Steam, XB1, XSX] The House of The Dead: Remake for $3.75 (90% off) @ Nintendo eShop / Steam / Xbox

580

Heavily discounted to a new all-time low price, presumably to celebrate the release of The House of The Dead 2: Remake.

7.2/10 user rating on MetaCritic, and 70% positive reviews on Steam. Which I think is a fair valuation of the game based on it being somewhere between full price to 50% off.
But for 90% off? Easy recommendation to relive a classic lightgun experience, especially if you have some friends/family members to play it with.

I've seen posts online and videos on Youtube talking about how the better gyros on the Switch 2 makes the game a much better experience than it was on the Switch 1, so it should be an even easier recommendation if you have a Switch 2.

Also available:

As at the time this is posted, this price is not available for the PS4/PS5 version.

The thought of playing this with gyros or sticks… Bleh

    • Surely they could have used the IR camera on the Joy Con to work like a pointer gun. Throw it in one of those $2 attachments and you'd be set. Shame.

      • Can't that still be done if it has a gyro?

        https://www.bigw.com.au/product/shooting-game-gun-controller…

EDIT: It doesn't work the best unfortunately:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnQQpfXaO-A

      • The IR camera is only on the right Joy-Con, and faces the player. It's also been completely removed from the Joy-Con 2.

Anyway, while the Joy-Cons were a definite step down from playing lightgun games on the Wii (and backwards compatibility on Wii U), that ~70% rating largely reflects my personal sentiments of the whole experience as someone who paid almost the full price for the physical copy.

I read somewhere those old IR gun only works on the old CRT TVs, won't work on current LCD/LED flat screen TVs.

    • +5

Agreed. Classic House of Dead game should be played with a handheld gun pointing at the screen, any other way is just not game.

    • exactly. I've missed light gun games since the wii.
why can't anyone be bothered making one?

switch has a gyro "light gun game", oh it's so painful.

vr is the only way now

      • I don't know if it's a case of they can't be bothered. Aren't there some sort of technical constraints that prevent light guns working with modern flat screen TV's? Which is why they disappeared along with the old CRT technology.

I think there are some new attempts to make it work using cameras etc, but I don't know how good they are.

        • Well with the wii they used that sensor bar. They also had that for the Wii U and yet they did not make any games anymore.

I recall playing HOTD 2 & 3 at Time Zone (not so much the original). But had HOTD 1 & 2 on Windows back in the day (those Sega games on like Daytona, Virtua Fighter 1 & 2, Virtua Cop on PC were pretty cool).

    Purchased this remake on Xbox!

Worth a try at this price on Switch.
Read somewhere it’s rock solid 60fps on Switch 2 but I recommend tweaking the gyro settings per this video or something similar

Comments seem to reflect positive results. Haven’t tested myself yet 😅 YMMV.

  • The controls on Switch are awful. I pre-ordered this with fond memories of arcade days but played for maybe 20 mins before I decided it was not for me.

  • A retro game channel techdweeb put up a recent video on modern light guns that use 4 small sensors mounted to the corners of a modern tv. They're quite expensive but work really well.

Thanks to the video I've given up looking for a working crt tv and am just going to save my pennies for these light guns.

    • Wow those are cool!!! Pricey but the specs are amazing so im sure its worth the money. We dont play enough these types of games to justify the expense but would love to have one. The recoil looks amazing.

There's actually a kickstarter for a Light Gun system with 4 games (Time Crisis, Point Blank, Steel Gunner 1 & 2) at the moment. This doesn't need any sensors. The kickstarter absolutely smashed it's initial goal.

      • Reading the comments on KS, aparently that gun only works with the bundled games. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

        • Yes correct. It's still early days but I'm hoping someone hacks the unit in the future to add games. As of now the people making the unit say that these 4 games are the only ones you'll be able to play.

  • Does anyone have a link for any cheap gun attachments for the switch?

Overkill was fun with the wiimote

    • I still have wii+wode jukebox & wiiu(softmod), the guns and a bunch of shooting games including HOTD1&2, Overkill. The Resident Evil ones are good too if your a fan.

I did buy this remake for $3.75 it's a bargain, though I don't know about the hand controls, I hope still just as fun…

Yeah I soft-modded my wii, got a hdd attached with basically the whole wii game library

That's a lot of memories with this game…

Anyone ever play typing of the dead

    • +1

Yes, was a fun game. Still have a modded Dremcast with sd-card internals and a keyboard somewhere if I get the urge to play it but haven't done so for a few years now.

    • +1

Yep, loved it. Was mentioning it to my wife this morning that it's like an educational game with included violence

    • yup! fun times to learn typing as a kid

  • Even cheaper if you have japanese account and yen to pay. Y259

Picked a physical copy of this up for cheap a year or so back…. tempted to buy the digital at this price and sell the physical once the sale is over, looks like it tends to get around $50 on ebay.

  • Bought it on Steam. Can’t wait to replay the game of my childhood.

  • Very tempted by switch 2 - will have a look at some gameplay vids first maybe…..

  • Nostalgia! Why don't they make gun attachments like they used to? Point Blank, Time crisis! Why no guns?!

    Edit: (Damn LCD TVS!)

The decline in popularity and eventual discontinuation of gun attachments for game consoles, like the NES Zapper or Sega's Light Phaser, is primarily due to the shift from CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) televisions to modern flat-screen technologies like LCDs. Light guns, the most common type of gun attachment, relied on the specific way CRTs displayed images, and this technology is incompatible with modern displays. Additionally, the market for these types of games and peripherals has diminished, with a greater emphasis on standard controllers and digital game distribution

I just posted this above. There's a kickstarted currently for a Light Gun system with 4 games (Time Crisis, Point Blank, Steel Gunner 1 & 2).

      https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tasseidenki/gaime-plug-…

      • Does this gun even work with anything or just its own box? We need something that plugs into an Xbox an is plug and play

        • Just with its own box with, in either the 1 game or 4 games options.
          From the FAQ:

Is this plug-and-play, or do I need to install drivers?
G‘AIM’E is 100% plug and play, you do not need to install any drivers. This is the advantage of using G‘AIM’E!

Can I use the G‘AIM’E Gun on another console?
No, it is only compatible with the G‘AIM’E TV Unit.

Will more games be added to the G‘AIM’E TV Unit?
No, it is not designed to be user-upgradeable.

  • Ahh the memories…

  • I'm shocked there's not an Anbernic-like out there developing an affordable lightgun/camera combo and/or a force-feedback joystick range (now they're no longer restricted) just for the purposes of nostalgia. Done right, at the right price, they'd sell their socks off.

Given the discussion about lightgun games, what do people here think about this kickstarter? - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tasseidenki/gaime-plug-…

Not sure I would use it enough to back it myself and would probably just end up in a drawer, but interesting nevertheless.

    • You can still use wii controllers on PC and a sensor bar and the Dolphin emulator.

    • I'll let you know in a few months. I bit the bullet so to speak so am looking forward to this. Especially Time Crisis.

  • Bring back typing of the dead!

    • +1

Unfortunately, I don't believe there's any publisher that's selling the original Typing of the Dead on any legitimate channels at this time, so you'll probably need to sail the high seas if you want to find a copy of that.

On the other hand, Typing of the Dead: Overkill for Steam is currently available for $10.79 at Fanatical, which is the cheapest it's been (excluding grey key resellers) for over a year now according to GG.Deals.

  • Just in time for the PC vr mod

Now there are 3 ways to play on PC. Flat, Vr on flat. and full VR 6dof

Is it worth getting if playing using mouse? Seeing a bunch of neg reviews on steam gives me second thoughts.

  • PC (and hopefully steam deck), switch or XBOX?

    Any better than others?

  • Can you still buy this for the WiiU?

  • Is this on sale on PSN as well?
