[QLD] NetGear Orbi RBK763S AX5400 Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi 6 System (3-Pack) $249.97 @ Costco, Coomera (Membership Required)

550

Spotted this at Costco today and thought it was a good deal.

Based on deals posted here in the past, the cheapest was around $350 so could be ATL?

I was tempted to pick one up to replace my aging Deco M5 but got stingy and didnt buy one.

Hope it helps someone.

Would there be big difference if replacing these one with Deco M5 in a 2 storey double brick house ?

    • +10

Yes you can use the house for shelter and it has other amenities such as toilets and cooking facilities. If you replace a Deco M5 in a double storey brick house with these you will still have internet but no house, which in my opinion is a substantial difference

Yes thank you how are you

        Don’t worry, I got it.

These are good. Easily covers a 3 level house and a garage on the other side of the backyard. I use them in AP mode and leave the router/NAT/DNS/DHCP/DynDNS duties to other equipment, however the Orbi main router is capable of all those things too.

Works just fine in a location where TP-Link or Asus couldn't get decent speeds.

The only complaint I have is that over the years Netgear have dumbed down the configuration, don't provide ssh access and rely on an app as the main method of configuration. I'm old school and prefer to get my hands on everything as directly as possible. If you are after something where you are guided by an app and don't have to configure much if anything, then these are the right choice.

BTW: Netgear have also gotten on the subscription bandwagon and the Orbi supports optional subscriptions to various security/parental services. The good news is that you don't have to use them and it still works just fine for normal use.

    • That's a huge area (I presume double brick?) that this mesh network is servicing - do you use ethernet backhaul? And are 2 satellites (in addition to main unit) enough for that big an area? That seems pretty wild to me

I have deco m5 and like the deco app well enough, but I hate that I can't ethernet directly into the settings config

Also absolutely despise any subscription model for hardware you own

I did use 1Gbit Ethernet backhaul for a while. These are tri-band, with a dedicated WiFi band near 5.8GHz for backhaul. I used to have a Uniden 5.8GHz DSS/DECT phone, which interfered with the backhaul frequency (only while on the phone), so that's why I chose GigE. Once I decommissioned the Uniden phones and redirected the landline number to a VoIP app on my mobile, the WiFi backhaul was as good as the wired option.

House is mostly double brick, with the exception of the sunroom which is an addition that has timber frame with plasterboard on one side and corrugated, (sealed with lead based paint, covered in many layers of water based acrylic paint) asbestos on the outside. Garage is timber frame with Colorbond and plasterboard - I had the asbestos removed from there.

I was actually surprised with the coverage and quality. One router and two satellites, although my testing indicated that just the router and one satellite would have been acceptable for non-demanding use. WiFi serves a couple of dozen IoT devices, as well as several gaming consoles, phones, tablets, chromecast, TVs & laptops. Wired has a number of PVRs, media player boxes, workstations and a NAS connected. Most of the time the two bottlenecks in my network are the FTTP connection and wired Ethernet port on NAS. Both are only Gigabit. I do have a 4 port GigE card for the NAS, but I've been procrastinating and it's still sitting sealed in it's antistatic bag, more than a year later. Maybe I should contemplate going straight to 5GigE. ;-) Not much I can do about NBN speeds without breaking the bank.

As mentioned above, I only use the Orbi in access point mode, so they are not being asked to do anything too strenuous in terms of routing, NAT, packet inspection, etc. Just good WiFi.

        • wow that's very helpful - thanks for the info! how interesting that your gigabit ethernet is your bottleneck. i have a similar mix of devices and the deco m5 serves well enough, but i'm about to re-develop so just trying to figure out the right setup I'll need - figured ethernet backhaul was going to be essential. but given your experience maybe that's not a given. thanks mate, will dig into it further.

@DaiShan: If you are renovating, definitely stick Ethernet cable wherever you can and use it for backhaul. Leave the WiFi spectrum free for traffic that needs it. Wired is always better than WiFi assuming that you are running GigE or better. You never know when or where interference will come from. Wired connections are relatively immune to that.

            • @peteru: Yeah I figured as much - thanks mate

Is this just 6 or 6e?

    • +1

      Image and description say 6

Hmm I just saw this at Costco today for 499 but got it at JB for 399.

Re the subscription yeah it’s a grab. On my old orbi I could use the free Circle bit and it was good for blocking sites on the kids devices but the new one does almost nothing for free

    • Any reason this over the 6e google wifi nest pro?

      • +4

The Nest Pro is garbage. Read my comments in the last deal and don't waste your money. The Orbi is a significantly superior mesh system.

        • Any ideas on a mesh network that includes the 6ghz band?

        • How does the orbi compare with eero?

          • @gunnny: Not a fan of Eero to be honest, although they seem to get a decent wrap.

      • Mainly comments on here and even from the JB guy that the Google one is less reliable. Although the wifi network has disappeared this morning already on the new Orbi

    Any in VIC?

    • +2

At Moorabbin but price is 499. Apparently it's a store-specific discount.

      • Thanks mate. Saved me a trip

  • Anyone see if these are the same price in NSW?

    • +1

Had a quick look around Lidcombe and couldn't see any, might've missed it though.

    • Couldn't see any at Casula

Managed to grab one in Auburn. Called to confirm that they still had 6 before heading there, so they should still have a few left.

You need to ask the staff to write a note to pay at the checkout first, then collect it from the merchant pickup.

Has anyone been able to price match in Officework with pictures of the price tag? They are not available on the Costco website. Thanks

    • +2

Officeworks don’t price match Costco anymore!!!!!!

Is this deal at Coomera only ?

  • Can anyone confirm if North Lakes (Qld) Costco has these for the same price?

    • Took the chance and NL scanned at same price as Coomera. But they don't have the discount sign up and they only have about 3 left.

  • Will the older Orbi satellite units work with this?

    • No. You can't mix-n-match between Orbi generations.

      • Okay thanks. I have so much old school Orbi stuff scattered around my property and it would cost a fortune to replace, especially as it currently works well

  • Keen to know if they’re doing this in WA. Worth signing up for membership just for this.

  • Could not find this at Ipswich yesterday.

  • Are these good for streaming like Moonlight?
