Travel GaN Charger

Hey all,

Looking for recommendations on a GaN charger that I can take with me on a long overseas trip please. Happy to splurge a little if needed. Ideally it can charge a laptop + a number of accessories simultaneously.

Basically, something to replace the laptop power plug but adds the convenience of being able to charge everything else that the same time as well

Thank you

  • I bought this one.

Apart from all the ports it also has an extension power cable so all your USB cables don’t need to go back to the power point.

So a neg with no follow up? Completely useless.

I use that one, charges all my devices.

I use a Satechi one and then just buy the relevant figure 8 cable separately for whatever the country uses for their power points.

Been using zyron tech for years and very happy. Owned a couple different sizes and configurations and still going strong. Just pick the size and config that suits your needs.

I would recommend sticking to the more established brands (e.g. Anker, UGREEN, Satechi…etc.), and for international travel, I've always preferred ones that can plug into a "figure 8" cable (e.g. https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-Charger-Charging-Station-Co…).

You can then just bring the right "figure 8" cable for the region you're going to, or just using the AU cable and plug into a plug converter. Sometimes hotels are pretty bad with the location of power plugs, so these ones are a bit more flexible.

I also carry a "multi"-type charger (e.g. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07C6K54VV/) as a backup in my luggage (not suggesting this particular one is good), but I generally don't like to use them because they're an awkward shape and easily fall out of sockets (and have plenty of other safety concerns vs. a standard charger).

Ultimately, depends on how much you travel - if you travel a lot, it's probably worth just getting a standard 65W charger in US and EU plug and keeping them in your bag, as opposed to trying to muck around

Highly recommend the Anker 735 GaNPrime if you can get away with 65W, for me when travelling it's the perfect size/watts compromise. I was initially worried it would be underpowered for charging but practically when I considered how I actually use my laptop and devices on a trip it's now my favourite travel charger.

  • Thanks so much all for your input. I actually ended up buying both a 65W charger as well as a the figure 8 ones to trial for the coming trip. Dwelled on it for so long and couldn't decide between them so I went with both! Let's see how we go

    • The 65W charger has the added benefit of being able to be used on the plane (if your seat has an power outlet). Usually their outlets can't really handle more than that so it's nice to be able to charge devices during the flight. Get a longer charging cable and you're all set.
