Logitech MX Keyboard Battery Issue - Recommendation Which Replacement Battery to Use?

The battery of my logitech MX Keys are going kaput as it will not charge beyond 50% and when it is unplugged off the USB-C cable, it drop to 20% in about 20mins. So i think the battery needs replacing.

I have googled which battery to use but could not really figure out which one to really go for. Looking for recommendation if anyone has done so?

Just buy a new one. They are like $120 on special. More pain doing the battery and potentially buggering it up than what its worth.

    • We have 2 of such keyboards in the house - mine and wife's. Bought around the same time - and mine is starting to play up. Would be an expensive exercise if the keyboard is replaced simply because the battery went kaput - but thanks for the suggestion.

How long have you had it for? Worth going through warranty?

        • maybe about 2 years or so - lost track to be honest.

          • @jeeg: Give it a go. Going through Logitech is probably the best option for the moment.

I bought mine in 2020 but I never use the battery tbh. Mine still lasts quite a while. It is usually on my desk plugged into usb - c though. Only reason it is unplugged is to plug something like my airpods in. Understand of course everyone’s needs are different but it is still perfectly usable plugged in directly.

            • @Randxyz123: Thanks mate. Will try to track down the receipts. Can't remember even who/where did we buy this from.

What? New battery is something like $10-20 on AliExpress. Please do not normalise just throwing things out after a few years, as it just incentivises manufacturers to sell junk designed to break as opposed to stuff that is repairable and lasts.

Yeah, sure, but it could all go to waste if you bugger something up. I am not sure what is involved in a battery replacement, but maybe purchasing a new keyboard would be easier, less painful and you get the latest model with new keys etc. I've had an MX Keys for ages and never had a battery issue. I replaced it because they were on special and the lettering on the keys had worn out.

Sometimes you just need to go. Is it worth the time and effort for ~$120?

        • Or not.

Sometimes a "new" model is inferior (or at least different in a negative way) to the "old" one.

          • @LFO: Sometimes yes, that is possible.

Thanks bro. Something like this is okay?

Yes no problem. This shop should be fine, looking at other items seems to be a battery dealer. They have been around since 2015. As long as it's not from a multi-purpose store selling pencils and toilet brush you are good to go.

        • Thanks bro. I think i will just order this one in. Still cant find my previous receipts to start a RMA so might just cop the cost to replace the battery

    • Pfffft, moderate.

Maybe my definition of easy/moderate/hard is different… but that's remove the feet, unscrew a couple of screws, pry it open, swap out the battery and reassemble….
Yeah it's harder than opening a removable cover, but it's not likeyou need to remove multiple sub-assemblies and fragile ribbon cables.

my issue is when not plugged in and i press Q it will register as Q and then move the cursor to the beginning of the sentence. (ie like pressing Q and then Home button).
    when plugged in, problem dissapears

    • Is it some weird setting enabled in Logi Options? Have a look there if you have it installed

      • Nope. I have tried to factory reset, and even with my work laptop (no software installed), same issue.

  • The batteries in these keyboards aren’t very good in my experience, especially if you’re connected to three devices on them.

In the end I just keep mine plugged into power 24/7 and it’s by far the easiest and lowest effort solution.

Interesting to hear. I've had my MX Keys for about 6 years and I still get weeks out of the battery. Are you always using it with the backlight on?

    • Yes i have the backlight on. Is that the main reason the battery went kaput?

      • Could be, that would drastically reduce the battery life and therefore increase the number of charge cycles it has been through. I rarely use the backlight, only when working in the evening which isn't that often.

        • That would explain the short battery lifespan i am seeing now. But the backlit keys are so much nicer to use. 🙂

      • Unlikely. I use mine with the backlight on all the time and charge it probably once a week. I will just let it charge over the weekend and then take it off. I do the same of my MX Master 3 Mouse.

I wouldn't say that is why the battery has gone.

Mine is 75% now and I think I charged it on Friday when I got the low battery alert.

        • Thanks. I currently have the USB-C cable plugged into the keyboard at all times (otherwise the battery will deplete further) - am slightly concern this is a safety issue?

          • @jeeg: Whats the safety concern? It'll be fine. Someone already does it.

            • @geekcohen: Thanks. Missed that particular remark. Was only concern that the battery will be constantly being charged and result in fire or something. But if this is not an issue i will do so in the interim while i wait for the battery to arrive.
