I’m sure about Boost as it’s Telstra. Amaysim I’m not sure. I was overseas and just used WhatsApp, iMessage and messenger.
Amaysim is Optus and it works.
Moose Mobile is also Optus but alas it did not work. I guess it’s something from their end that disables it? Even though it’s on the same network.
WiFi calling is almost standard nowadays, I’m just disappointed Moose didn’t have it. I mean of course yes there’s WhatsApp, messenger, iMessage, or whatever else. But many VoWiFI use cases like receiving texts for 2FA or making calls.
Was in Auckland trying to buy museum tickets online with my ANZ credit card, and had to get the secure code through text. Would’ve been nice if there was VoWiFi to support that. Ended up having to use another international card.
Boost and Amay both has wifi calling
Did you follow Moose Mobile's roaming activation process?
Receiving an SMS is FREE with Moose Mobile’s roaming service
This is either not true or it’s being misinterpreted.
I think there’s a large chance they mean that once you purchase the roaming pack $15 then texting is free (which is stupid?)
“Receiving an SMS is FREE with Moose Mobile’s roaming service and you will not begin a roaming pack if you are simply receiving an SMS from your Australian bank to your number. You will only incur costs with roaming if you send an SMS, make or receive a call, or use mobile data.”
Also sending an SMS, making or receiving a call are all things that are free if done under voice over WiFi with the other carriers.
So yea I defo think this might be something that’s a real negative on Moose.
It is true. Read the FAQ at the bottom of the page. The $15 roaming pack is not required for receiving SMS.
@shxhshzhz: As I prefaced on my post, it’s just my experience. Yes I’ve looked at this page as well as their FAQs and plan details. I’ve used various carriers over the years and am a frequent traveller, I know how to tinker with VoWiFi and roaming settings, so I’m 100% sure Moose Mobile’s voice over WiFi is not operational, at least in New Zealand.
YMMV, feel free to test it out yourself.
I’m currently still on Moose and traveling to NA next week. I guess we’ll see 😬
@Dr Fruit: I was in Vietnam recently and I had to switch to Boost due to Amaysim wifi calling, they won't work overseas with Optus network.
I've used Moose Mobile Roaming and was able to receive free sms, no worries at all. This was my experience when going overseas multiple times in the last 6 years. The only thing i did not like with Moose was that you had to pay a deposit amount, totally refundable.
This is straight from the Moose’s mouth:
“Why do I have to make a $200 prepayment if I only intend to receive SMS for free while overseas?
Due to the nature of the international roaming service we can’t limit you to only receive SMS while overseas. This means that the potential for you to accidentally use data, send an SMS, or make/receive a call is still there, and we need to take a $200 prepayment which acts as a credit on your account in case these charges are used. Once you have returned from your trip overseas we can refund this amount to you.”
I went along with it when I needed to roam with Moose, and they gave me this justification and the fact that call charges from overseas carriers are delayed.
But even with all that it still sounds like a load of bollocks to me. They already direct debit your card every month, they can just debit the increased amount due to roaming.
I can confirm WiFi calling doesnt work.
They also just jacked up prices for loyal customers and discount to get other over, in assume as people are jumping ship.
And NO eSim
Look at lebara.
Now they're owned by voda, and now that voda towershare with optus, their 365 day plans are bloody tempting.
Wi-Fi calling only works in Australia with Optus and Vodafone, you will need a Telstra MVNO to get it working overseas without roaming.
I was going to say this in case the comment hadn't been made yet @Dr Fruit
You seem to be working on the assumption that Wi-Fi Calling = "being able to call while overseas for free"
As ballistykx has said, this is only true for Telstra MVNOs - and essentially it simulates you being in Australia and being able to use all your Australian inclusions while overseas (with the exception of calling non-Australian numbers).
But take a step back - you need to look at what Wi-Fi Calling actually is. The way Telstra Wi-Fi Calling works appears to be the exception rather than the rule.
All it is, is being able to make calls over Wi-Fi, and AFAIK in an Australian context, the most obvious use-case is if you live out in the sticks and reception is piss poor - at least you've got your home Wi-Fi connection which could actually be superior to your standard reception (something city people - myself included - probably have never experienced).
This whole being able to simulate being in Australia, and thus, being able to freely make calls on your Australian number while overseas using Wi-Fi Calling, is not a "feature" per se. I don't really know why Telstra allow it, but it is really only a Telstra thing.
Are you saying you've managed to get this working on Amaysim? Because I've tried, and I haven't been able to get it working (I spend more time overseas than in Australia these days)
I was with Amaysim in late 2023-mid 2024 and it definitely worked for such when I was abroad in Canada, US, Taiwan and Japan.
In mid 2024 I swapped to Boost and it works in the above mentioned places as well.
Not sure if things have changed.
But also, the whole voice over WiFi protocol typically doesn’t distinguish where you’re accessing the network from, as far as I can tell? I also have native SIM cards from the US and Canada where I keep numbers and across the board all of them work flawlessly for calls and texts over the VoWiFi while I’m residing in Australia. Dunno if currently in Australia it’s actually only Telstra allowing it.

I've been with Amaysim somewhat inconsistently since then and haven't ever gotten Wi-Fi Calling working overseas - but I've also not tried hard to get it working because of my understanding above - that is, I never expected it to work on Amaysim, while I did expect it to work on Telstra MVNOs.
But also, the whole voice over WiFi protocol typically doesn’t distinguish where you’re accessing the network from, as far as I can tell?
Agreed that it doesn't have to, but it appears like it does. The Australian ones certainly do, at least.
Even though Telstra MVNOs are the only ones it works on, there is still a level of distinction it clearly draws. That is, if you try to call from your Telstra MVNO SIM to a non-Australian number while on Wi-Fi Calling overseas, there will be an error which says something like..
Sorry, while using Wi-Fi calling outside of Australia, you may only call Australian numbers.
So I think it is reasonable to conclude from this that:
Although, I just had an idae. What if you VPN'd to an Australian server while travelling with Amaysim. Could you then use Wi-Fi Calling? I have a feeling it might still fail, as I somehow get the feeling that it would detect that the cell towers you're connected to are not Australian.
But.. what if you did it on Airplane Mode then..? Hm, maybe something I could try next time.
Why is wifi calling important when travelling overseas? Is it just the ability to make calls in areas of poor mobile reception? You would still get charged roaming rates right?
No - It simulates being in Australia so you can call Australian numbers and receive calls for free as if you are in Australia.
Yeah, I had the same experience earlier this year when I travelled to India. No wifi calling or SMS. I received SMS, because I paid the deposit for roaming and receiving SMSes are free. I contacted support and got some generic answer that was no help whatsover. Interestingly I also got charged for one call, made at an odd time that I never made (confirmed by my phone's call log). But it was only a few dollars and not worth fighting.
I also brought my Aldi Mobile SIM on the same trip, and wifi calling didn't work either. I spent a while trying to diagnose it and messed with settings, turning off roaming and trying to connect to a different network in the hopes of forcing it, but from my web searching I could only guess that it only works until roaming kicks in (or maybe when you lose wifi) and then you can't get it back.
100Mbps speed cap FYI.
Yeah, not sure why they brag about 5G when there's such a low speed cap in place. But it's common unfortunately, probably coming from Optus and Telstra.

I get the sentiment behind what you're saying. You're implying it's practically insignificant/misleading because of the speed cap but…
It's really not that hard to understand, is it? Because marketing and 5G looks and sounds better/faster than 4G
No eSIM
Excess Data Charges
Excess data is charged at $9 per GB ($0.00879 per MB). However,
you will only be charged for what you use in KB increments. This
means that if you used an additional 100MB of data you would be
charged an additional 88 cents on your next bill.
I do not like post paid services…
Set a monthly data limit on the phone and the post paid service can't charge extra.
Can it be bought now and activated later?
Yes u can activate later. Usually after you received the sim card.
I thought only Amaysim use the full Optus network given it is owned by Optus?
Telstra is the only network with a separate wholesale network for MVNOs with reduced coverage.
Oh, so all Optus MVNOs use the entire Optus network?
Yes but some cheaper MVNOs only give 4G access to some plans.
Currently on this, anyone know if you port out for a month & back in, can you get another 6mths At 50% off?
Porting out and back in makes you a new customer.
Had Moose previously, the SIM experiences are all the same for mine for these types of cheap deals, just be wary the admin is putrid with these guys, FYI promo ends 31st August.
I purchased a sim last time they ran this promotion (a few weeks ago) but haven't activated the sim yet as my current plan doesn't expire until next week.
Anyone been in this situation? Do Moose still honour the initial sign up price and inclusions or will I have to pick the current price plan of the day as part of the activation process?
Question: is the 40GB per month or totally for 6 months ? Did I miss any small word in the CIS?
You get 40 GB Per month, each month for the six months duration.
Thanks heaps mate
It’s not Optus’ full 5G network. MVNOs don’t get access to 5G Standalone, which is a significant amount of their 5G coverage and capacity.
Another thing to note is that Moose Mobile and other MVNOs will have deprioritised service when the network is congested.
MVNOs will have deprioritised service when the network is congested.
According to this, they don't.
But it also kinda doesn't make sense… I mean, great if it's true, but why wouldn't Optus deprioritise MVNOs if it's congested? It would be pretty logical and, daresay, reasonable to
Just something from my own experience: was traveling to NZ a couple weeks ago and Moose Mobile did not have WiFi calling. No calls or mms whatsoever. Don’t know if this is the case across the board when traveling internationally on Moose Mobile.
Their website FAQ says they have WiFi calling but no luck.
Amaysim and Boost both do and work perfectly.
