Any recommendations for 2 computers to switch to dual monitors?

I'm using multi device keyboard and mouse but changing HDMI ports is a pain

    • Hmm same request, just had a look around and this seems to tick the boxes?
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Switch-Monitors-Computers-Monitor-…

      • This looks good. I need DP from my PC and HDMI from my laptop going to the one screen.
I'm currently using a KVM for the USB devices but running video for both directly to the monitor and switching between them manually.

        • You can do this with software I do the same it’s essentialy free. It’s will send the switch input command to your monitor and it will switch inputs. Bit of trial to set up runs on command line but I just make a batch file with a short cut on each machine to switch inputs. I will try find its name and post back.

I bought this for 1 DP monitor and 1 HDMI monitor, but sounds like it fits your use case perfectly, as I was doing the exact same beforehand.

    • Some Dell monitors have built-in KVM with USB support so could be useful. Can't remember if any of them also support DP MST daisy chaining. If do, that would be awesome.

UGreen has multiple versions of KVM available, including dual-host models: https://www.amazon.com.au/s?k=ugreen+kvm

    • get a thunderbolt 4 dock, this is the only workable solutions.

don't ask me how many other devices I have tried.

  • This seems to be more of a HDMI switch than a KVM you would use for management of say a cluster of mini PC'S.

Sadly dosent fit my use case, but interesting if you have one good HDMI and a bunch of machines you want connected to the same set of peripherals.

    • Yeah so my use case is to have a PS5, Work Laptop, Gaming PC and MBP connected to my one screen with shared KB, Mouse. It’s more of a KVM than a HDMI switcher.

I am currently using this and it has been superb

This is already a very standard switching KVM. It switches both HDMI and USB hub.

Some higher-end models for professional use may include features like HDMI-matrix (allows PIP/PBP), EDID clone (so hosts always think the monitor is plugged-in, also helps with faster switching), HID emulation on dedicated ports (so hosts would see keyboard and mouse all the time instead of plugging-in and out upon switching). Though I believe they will be very expensive.

      • This is a great explainer, thanks. The one I want from Level1 Techs store is over $1100AUD and has all those features.

  • RE: switching. If sharing storage, as I think I'm reading these can do, won't a mac complain you didn't eject the media properly if instead you are just pressing the switch button?

    • +1

      Yes it would complain

Some KVM has host-dedicated ports where device on those ports will only be connected to a certain host. May be helpful. Though I don’t think the one in this listing supports such feature.

    • A. Eject the media properly before you press the switch button

      B. Surely if you want shared storage then you're doing it with a NAS ?

  • How do you connect one of these when you have an M1 Mac Mini?

    • Into one of the switches ports, you’d connect a USB cable and HDMI - those would go into the USB and HDMI of the Mac Mini

  • Oh so you don’t really need to connect two hdmi cables then.

  • Thought I would ask a question, its kind of on topic , but worth asking for this seems to be the right place. Is there such a "switch" of sorts, that can operate 2 separate computers ( mouse and keyboards strokes) simultaneously, outputing a display to 1 monitor?

    • What's the use case for this ?

Received this today - thought I'd do a review.

TL;DR: It's fantastic. It works flawlessly, and the switching is reasonably quick.

It comes with 4 HDMI cables, 5 USB A to C cables (one of which is for power, but it doesn't seem to need external power).

It does everything I want - I only use one 48" 4K screen (LG C1 OLED) and it connects my MacBook Pro, Gaming PC and PS5 with the one keyboard and mouse.

There weren't any hiccups at all - it was plug and play.

I was previously using this and I had that connected to my MacBook, Apple TV and PS5. It worked well, but since the BF6 supports Keyboard and Mouse on PS5, I wanted a KVM solution.

It's really sleek, and built well. It comes with everything you'd need to get started.

    The only cons:
    * Doesn't support Dolby Vision, but it supports HDR10+ - I am not using any Dolby Vision devices with it, as my Apple TV is now hooked into its own port.
    * No keyboard hotkey switching
    * I wish it had a wireless remote, like the previous HDMI switcher I was using, but this makes it super easy to see what's currently connected as the wired remote has built-in LEDs.

    Highly recommend

    • Nice review! Do the KB/mouse/USB devices appear disconnected when switching? Do you notice any minor hassles like that with this KVM?

      • +1

Thanks! Yes, the video and USB devices disconnect when you're switching.

Other than that - it's been great.

I don't mind the USB/ video disconnecting, as I really only use one device at a time.
