Select EPL Premier League Games - Live and Free @ Channel 9

1930

Looks like some EPL games will be live and free on channel 9 in HD.

Starting with Villa vs Newcastle Sat 16th 9.30pm AEST

Other fixtures not confirmed but likely to be early Saturday fixtures for primetime viewing which would have Man city vs Tottenham on the 23rd.
A way for them promote their EPL and football line up this season.

Enjoy. Personally got a Stan sub sorted for the season ahead with some EPL games in 4k

Nice! I moved to Stan from Optus as well…but good to know that it might be on down at the local!

We should get an Ozbargain Fantasy PL league going.

      Deal is EPL

      • -1

yes I don't believe EPL has ever been free in Oz.

        • +12

The weekly highlights show on SBS was the tits back in the day.

          • +3

@Captain Yobbo: Your not confusing the SBS later nights shows that used to be on back in the day?

          • +6

@Captain Yobbo: Speaking of tits SBS was so good for football and European movies.

          • +1

@Captain Yobbo: Used to lap that up after school! 2002/2003?

        • +1

There was a limited time deal around 2018 between SBS and Optus in exchange for world cup rights but that ended 2019 was a good 5+ years ago.

          • +1

@scar4ace: really? there you go. I don't watch the round ball game, I hate the [subs] posts. But it's a worthy post.

        • +3

There used to be games shown on ABC back in the mid/late 90’s

          • @tofuguts: I'm fairly certain you're misremembering/hallucinating. OptusVision had the first rights back in 92, then Foxtel got it in 97.

            • +2

@M00Cow: They're not hallucianting, there used to be a weekly highlights show on Monday nights on ABC, and I recall the odd live game being broadcast in full as well.

FYI Optus Vision didn't start until 95.

              • @nandystam: highlights isn't the EPL. and ABC didn't have matches. I question that they even had the BBC MoTD highlights.

you're correct that Optusvision wasn't around until late 1995.

                • +2

@M00Cow: Highlights were 100% on Monday nights on the ABC, I used to nap in the early afternoon after I got home from school so I could stay up to watch them.

                  https://televisionau.com/classic-tv-guides/tv131293

The only full game I remember watching of the EPL prior to it being on pay tv was the final games of the 94/95 season. SBS showed Liverpool vs Blackburn Rovers live and then showed a replay of West Ham vs Man Utd (although not so interesting when you already heard the result of that game and saw the Blackburn players celebrating…)

Great news, but also kinda mad that they haven't made any effort at all to advertise or promote this

kinda mad that they haven't made any effort at all to advertise or promote this

Yes I'm also disappointed that Matt Stanton didn't knock on my door and tell me

  • +5

From the tv ads looks like a limited 3 week thing to get people to subscribe to Stan?

    • Correct

  • +2

Too old to stay up too late at night. Will stick to youtube highlights.

    • +14

Try VPN to US for longer highlights around 10-15mins from NBC/peacock. I find the ~3 mins highlights just a couple of goals and no idea of how the game actually went.

      • VPN gets BBC or itv

Considering how terrible Optus was at the very start, to their credit, they really got their act together toward the end.
Their 3 min highlights, mini match and extended mini match options were excellent and usually available really quickly after the games ended.

        • I always watched the 10 or 3 minute highlights of every match that wasn't an Arsenal one.
Stan better have something similar or I won't be happy.
Hopefully they have a decent MotD style highlight show too.

  • +13

Only for the first 3 weeks of the season - it's basically an advertisement to subscribe.

  • I heard it was only going to be for the first three weeks, according to one of the commentators during last Friday night’s rugby league coverage.

    • Disappointing, hope they get the numbers and extend at least until the October time changes.
That should see United, Liverpool, Arsenal also on in September!

  • +2

Stan sports is an addon. so I need to sub to Stan then Sub to Sports on top is too much for games that run super late. I end up watching 10 mins extended highlights on Youtube (using a VPN to US) the following morning for most games anyway

    • +1

Damn I was going to sign up. So we have to have two subscription? Might have to go IPTV route.

      • +1

I think its $25/month altogether until December

        • +1

Then $32 min a month after that

          • @imp: This is so much better than everything being on foxtel /s muh ala carte lmao

      • +1

If anyone knows of a good IPTV service for sports, DM me…
The one I used last season went AWOL.

        • All i will say is DaddyLive

        • My friend Ali Babba said he could help you out.

    • I cant stay awake until 2/4am for games anymore so just watch replays/highlights. Can’t justify a sub for EPL anymore as much as I love it

  • Yeah! Looking forward to be disappointed on FTA.

  • some in 4k? I thought the whole thing was they were all going to be in 4k

  • +2

I think the majority of games that are shown in the UK channels Sky Sports/TNT on Sat/Sun kick offs will be in 4K. Most of the 3pm premier league kickoffs which cannot be shown in the UK will likely just be 1080p. This page https://www.premierleague.com/en/news/4324539 is a likely snapshot of the 4K feeds that will be available to Stan, if they choose to broadcast in 4k. Compared to Optus, the Rugby/Champions League picture quality has been far superior to Optus so hope that continues. Worth bookmarking that site as it will update during the season giving a likely indication of 4K broadcasts.

The good thing, the early kickoffs are highly likely to be 4K.

    • +1

      They have advertised 4k

  • +6

Somebody gotta fight Stan and have their prices lower down, it’s a daylight robbing.

    • +1

Works out cheaper for most English football fans than previously, one sub (plus entertainment content) instead of multiple to watch PL/UEFA/FA.

  • I'm guessing it will be riddled with side banner ads, but at least the local pubs can finally show it without having to subscribe to optus/Stan

  • IPTV :)

    • +2

      Any recommendations?

      • No one does. It's as bad as private trackers. Everyone treats it like a secretive cabal.

    • I’ve got IPTV which is great for live games but I haven’t got a good alternative for watching highlights the next day. Used to be a fan of the Optus 8-15 minute highlights that didn’t show the score.

      Got any suggestions for this?

      • Youtube VPN USA. NBC sports EPL and CBS for UEFA. Extended highlights no spoilers from what I recall.

      • Please share details about IPTV?

        • No one in the right mind will share iptv details anywhere and risk it getting banned, I am afraid.

      • @Kim88 can you share details about IPTV?

Any one got a stan acc for sale?

  • I sub on with Stan deal that they have with the current Optus sports members

$25 for the 4K screen etc until mid December 2025

I’ve split it with 4 other friends so it makes it super worth while

Promoting a match all 14 people in Australia would be interested in is a bit of a let down.
People don't even want to play for Newcastle, let alone watch them.

    • -3

As a Villa fan, and not a mindless big 6 sheep, you sir can take a long walk off the shortest of short piers.

      Come on you Villa boys!!!

      • -5

What I'm saying is fact though. The amount of people that would be interested in that match would be less than a womens AFL match.
They would have been better off showing the Tuesday Everton match if they were wanting to promote the service. 28 people might have enjoyed that one.

        • By keeping the epl off fta moulds the exact scenario you have described.

        • Haha Everton being such a small club might only have 7 people watching lol

  • +1

scar4ace THANKS for posting this deal, some of the matches are on at midnight even 9-30 PM (Villa v Newcastle)
others of course in the wee wee hours….. should be able to record on a usb (pvr) and watch later

    • Ch 9 only has 1 game per round and looks like for limited rounds only. Rest is on Stan sport

  • -1

Nice! I was looking for this earlier in the week. Thanks OP.
