Will TRS Make Me Open My MacBook?

Bought a MacBook for my kid who lives overseas and want to claim TRS but also want to gift it to him.

Will they make you open the box to verify the item? Kind of defeats the purpose of gifting if they don’t get the joy of unboxing a brand spanking fresh Apple device

No they won’t, there’s also no requirement to take the box, just the item.

    • not sure why you were negged. I had an opened laptop that I claimed via TRS with no issues.

  • They may open the box

    • Correct they can do whatever they want. With mobile phone for example they want me get into setting and matching the serial numbers. There are cases people opened the box, replaced the laptop and re sealed.

During one of my TRS claims the officer asked the person in front of me to unlock the ipad they were claiming at that time - it wasn't boxed. The officer then checked the ipad's serial number (or other number) against the one shown on the receipt and determined they were making a fraudulent claim.

I think MacBook box would have the serial printed on the outside, so if you were unlucky enough to get the same officer or same process, then I think there's higher chance that they'd pass it because they can confirm the product is the right one for the presented receipt/invoice.

The guy in the above was making a big fuss about that's how he bought it with the officer explaining that in that case there's no reason for the numbers to differ then. She explained that they receive many claims of this type for ipads/iphones where someone obtains a copy a receipt to claim against their existing item. The guy in the end admitted the scam - just shrugged his shoulders and accepted the lecture (and no claim)

If opening the box is the Pinnacle of Excitement (FFS), then the fruit company ought to sell empty boxes that are sealed!

So, with all the $$$$ spent on the contents, the excitement lies in tearing open some flimsy plastic film. Stop watching unboxing videos.

They’ll probably film the unboxing and add it to their YouTube unboxing channel.

It’s all about content these days

So don't claim the TRS? Or say to the kid, "sorry, my 10% discount exceeds your joy at opening the box?"

    • Yeah my 10% discount is probably worth more. Haha

  • On a side note: Tax invoices for sales of $1000 or more must also include the buyer's identity, for example their full name or passport number.

With identity theft, crazy that you'll give your passport number to the store.

      Full name is sufficient.

    What?

FWIW, if you get hard unboxing new Apple devices, you'll love the job that one of my mates in IT had at the company I used to work for. His job was basically to open up all of the MacBooks and get them set up for new employees.
