  • Great bag, big and evil stiff zippers :(

    • Do the zippers ease up after some use?

      • +2

A little. I preferred using 1 zip to do most of the zip run over using two done up half way on the D shape

Definitely, yes. But I was not using it like a 'rugged' bag, more of a 'leisure' bag.
It was just alot of work, especially when full - to get it to line up right and unzip right and zip back up right.
The zipper felt like 'great quality' but it was clearly focused on staying 'strong'.

I have recently bought the BTTM bag - similar size, also great 'big' zippers, significantly nicer, imo.

Unisex Adult's Base Camp Duffel Bag

    What about other genders ?

    • +5

      They all fit inside ;)

    • Unisex is an adjective indicating something is not sex-specific, i.e. is suitable for any type of sex.

suitable for any type of sex

Those were the vibes I was getting from this bag too.

Is there are code…? The price is $219 for red and mauve, and $175.88 for black.

  • Showing as $219 for me?

  • I've got a few of these duffle bag types (of various sizes and different brands)
I like the Helly Hansen shape, and the Patagonia comfort.

Still, a bag like that for $149 - 175 feels expensive to me.
    I wish they were cheaper.

  • North Face seem to be stagnating amongst a lot more competition. Kind of what happened to Dyson. You can get more value for money from Helly Hansen which last forever.

    • Less American too if that's your thing these days

      • American parent company though (actually spun off from the same parent company that owns TNF)

North Face is really just a fashion brand now. competitors like Patagonia have more legitimacy as an outdoorsy brand

      • Tatonka seemed pretty popular in Europe / Central Asia for motorbike touring etc.

    • How much innovation do you really need for a duffel bag though?

      • Better assembly techniques to create a high quality bag for good value for money.

        • It's either sewing or ultrasonic welding. Ultrasonic welding came out ~20 years ago and looks great, but when it fails it fails really fast (the entire seam tears off in seconds) and cannot be repaired. Back in the day, the Patagonia Black Hole bags were known for this, but they've probably improved the process since. I did have a failure on an ultraonic seam recently, the clothing was maybe 7 years old.

Sewing is bulkier but if you use the right thread will be near indestructible. And if it does start to fail it takes long enough than you can see it and you can repair it with an awl.

Beyond that, there's not really much in the way of alternative assembly techniques for joining two panels of heavy duty synthetic fabric. Duffel bags are about as low design as you can get, so for something used for expeditions or regular air transport, you just want rugged. It doesn't have to be fancy.

Edit: Hm, from someone else's link below, looks like the Patagonia bags now use sewing and not welding.

  • As someone who owns this, and many others. they are great for flights as the baggage staff cant throw them around.

However, imo go bigger unless you have a specific use case.

The weight increase for a larger size is marginal. And it's a real pain to try and squeeze too much into a smaller bag.

    • I've been using these for ages. First one finally started disintegrating after about 15 years, probably because it was was in a really humid climate.

Very rugged bags if you're transporting pointy outdoor gear.

      • and easy to clean too. I hang mine outside, spray with detergent, scrub with a hand brush, then hose off.
