after a few months with nvidia 5070 ti i think i might go back to AMD, everything was just easy with AMD. Can't even turn over HDCP on nvidia!! have to do some commands and sh1t.

      • +1

Funny, after a month of a 9070 XT after years of nVidia, I was thinking to go back!

The 9070 is fine, but adrenelin software is hot garbage - so much useless bloat. (No I don't want the damn AI chatbot crap). It doesn't automatically optimise game settings - which nvidia did well, and I've had issues with vsync in Stalker2.

Visually looks fine, but I feel like I'm missing out on something given most games optimised for nvidia.

        • +1

Haha same as me. Snagged a 9070xt reaper on launch after being an NVIDIA guy for the last decade, and yeah adrenaline has given me the shits. Overlay hotkey seems to work 50% of the time, settings seem to random reset, ai bloat crap, and generally the UI kinda sucks.

On-top of that I've actually just RMAd the card as one of the fan bearings seem to have that grindy/buzzy sound that was reported on launch too.

performance wise the card was great

        • nvidia app isn't much better the fact they don't let you turn HDCP off or on is just BS to me. the overhead you get from HDCP is terrible I don't have the issues with amd software mainly because I know what to turn off and have been for years. so for me no bloat.

        • +1

if adrenaline is garbage nvidia's software must be turbo garbage

  • +1

good find at lease one 9070xt price is better than the non ebay afterpay deal

      • +3

Having a normal one over here I see

  • 2x8pin

  • +20

still absolutely objectionable value compared to other cards of this tier in years of the past.. but those years are in the past and it's slowly getting closer to where it should be

    • +3

I think that, at least, the Hellhound at this price would be considered a deal. This Afterpay sale doesn't push the price further down much

    • +1

Being new-to-PC building in past couple years, i appreciate that pre-covid backdrop - but this seems like good value in the more recent world (even if still some ground to hopefully make up!)

  • Worth upgrading from a 6750xt? Pairing with a 7600

    • i upgraded from 6700xt (6750xt is just slightly higher clocked of that) to 9070xt, basically doubling fps in most games.

      • Awfully temping, I'll grab it, cheers!

        • yea i've had my sapphire pulse model for couple months now, no regrets :)

    Waiting for sub 1k comeonnnnnn

    • +2

Only 3.5 months to Black Friday.

      • +5

Not to sound negative, but does black Friday actually deliver these last few years? For everything I follow (mostly OLED TVs/monitors/other tech), the best deals happen at random times throughout the year, with black Friday sales being pretty tepid in comparison

        • +1

Generally agree, but possibly might be alright this year given potential clearing stock to make way for supers (if they emerge in Q4 per rumours). Will see though - better/best deals on the 40 series did happen either side of BF

          • @gazer: Ah yep good point re/super series.

NVIDIA have been pretty good (greedy) at rolling cards out slow enough to keep demand high, but I see a lot of availability at the moment.

40 series card pricing deals actually became good by Post-Covid standards around 6 months before 50 series launch, so you might be right.

      • Or 15.5 to next black Friday. Will be even cheaper

        • Good point, I'll wait. Remember to know the difference between discretionary and essential.

    • +1

Whats the difference? Buy now at 1050 or wait months for 999? I'd pay the extra happily to get now

      • +3

Mmm it's about setting limits on spending on luxury items. If it's something I want, more than I need, I like to set caps on what I'd be willing to spend.

More a mentality, than a 'oh it's only 50 bucks'.

Because you're right. 50 bucks these days is easily spent at a Cafe for brunch for 2 lol. But the graphics card will last for years and provide x hours of entertainment, so it's worth it, sure.

        • Same reason why I'm not upgrading yet.

      • I'd get it now unless you're sure that it'll go 999 before next gen gets relatively close. With Trump tariffs at play, it's quite a risk to wait.

        • Hmm ya, I get ya.

But also, as this is very much a luxury item/my 3060 Ti is (mostly) fine, if I miss out, I miss out!

  • Dammit just bought the other deal

    • I prefer another one

    • Same :/

  • I keep getting the "This code can't be applied to your order", Afterpay already selected.

    Anyone having the same issue?

    • Someone mentioned the same issue from the 9800x3d deal.

      • Yea, tried with other deals, seems like the code no longer works.

        • Just tried, code applies correctly for me

          • @snep: Was able to use the code by checking out as guest, weird.

    • have you changed payment type to "Afterpay". I noticed that mine didnt work because the payment type defaulted to my CC

  • Hi @RichardF89

I’ve seen your comments under many desktop-related deals, and it seems like you’ve got a lot of good information on the topic. Would it be okay if I sent you a direct message?

This will be my first time building a desktop, and I’m planning to use it for programming (AI, machine learning, LLMs), video editing, and other projects. I’m considering running a dual-boot setup (Linux + Windows), but I’m not sure if it would be better to have a separate machine for some of these workloads.

I’d also like to use it as a server for:

    Security camera video feeds
    Centralized file storage
    VPN
    Home Assistant, AdGuard Home, pfSense
    Virtual machines

Currently, I’m leaning towards a Ryzen 9 9900X paired with an RX 7900 XTX. Do you think this would be a good setup for my needs?

    Thanks in advance!

    • As for GPUs, NVIDIA is generally the way to go for AI stuff (this was the case a year ago, support has gotten better but need to do your own research), but go AMD if you're doing stuff with Linux (though really depends on use case)

    • +4
      1. You should have a completely separate machine for use as a server. You shouldn't mix daily usage with things like security cameras, file storage, VPN, VMs, etc. Building a server that can run all that is quite cheap nowadays, and running a 9900x for this would be a massive overkill.

      2. Unless you specifically know why you need to dual boot Linux + Windows, there is no reason to do so when WSL2 exists.

      3. AI and ML applications benefit from more memory. 7900XTX is better for this than a 9070XT.

      4. If you're at a point where you are considering a 9900x, you may as well get a 9950x.

    • +2

Agree pretty much with everything adehmar said.

Server/homelab stuff should all be run on smaller/low power boxes (optiplex Micro (specifically, not SFF)refurb deals with 8-10th gen Intel cpus work amazingly for this, run 3 with proxmox for a full cluster if you want proper HA etc).

Dual boot Linux/Windows yeah kinda no point unless you have a very specific use-case. You can also run a Linux VM separately inside your server cluster and remote in for linux-specific things if it doesn't need the full power of your desktop.

    • +1

Much appreciated for all the responses.

  • i setup afterpay but its not accepting coupon after sellecting afterpay. :(

  • +1

This is a decent deal for a card that fits into smaller SFF cases.

  • descent deal if apay15 code works but it not work for me. :( tried ebay website, app and inside apay app.

    • Still working for me currently, Firefox web version. Haven't tried app. Ensure you're selecting the afterpay method prior to putting in the code + you can't have anything else in the cart. Having multiple items blanks out the afterpay payment option for me.

  • did exactly that, using ironfox for android.

  • ebay started giving me errors when going to checkout, gave option to use guest, which i did and code worked. first time using apay. will be replacing my RX 6800.

Also previoudly ordered the Ryzen 7700 and colorful B650 mainboard and 64GB of ddr5 ram of Aliexpress which i also waiting to install.

Should be good upgrade from my i7 7700 and 32GB ram and RX6800.

  • Code worked for me. Bought it.

Noting that staticice shows that Scorptec and PCCG have it at $1149, so this AP code gives realistically $100 off from the market price.

  • "SFF" at 300mm long! Crying holding my 5070 innod 12gb

    • Most SFF fit longer style cards, where they tend to struggle is thickness/height (original Ncase M1 here, length is usually not my primary issue, it's how tall the damn thing is/it can hit the mounting brackets of my side panel + PCIE cable bulge.

As an aside, how's the Inno3d 5070…? It's a secondary choice for me, if I decide I don't wanna pony up 1k for a card, keeping an eye on 5070 deals too. Does it run cool/quiet? This is usually my issue with the cheaper cards (inno, entry level galax, palit, etc), they tend to be noisier! I use open back headphones so too much noise from PC is annoying heh

      • +1

I have the 5070 innod in a velka 5 case, I think 270mm is the max length allowable. They had planned for a 5070ti with the same 2x fan innod cooler but they canned it. So pretty much the 5070 inno3d is the only GPU that fits. My case has zero fans, just rely on mesh sides and the GPU is cool, usually sits around 70°c while gaming with a mild undervolt, can't ask for much more. It sure is loud, but I need to run the fans on max as I have no secondary cooling. You can't have everything with a sandwhich case. My 9600x hits 90°s while gaming even with an undervolt. The 37m cooler height is a tough limitation!
This case is in a plane locker every other week as my FIFO mini onsite gaming PC, this thing as been in some really remote little dongas and the 5070 inno3d performs as it needs. I love it!

        • Yeah nice. That's sick.

You mentioned undervolt but have you also set like pbo negative offset along with a max limit on power draw? You could probs drop it to a 65w tdp making it equiv to a 9600 non x draw wise but bump a clock max to offset. If the chip is good lol.

Yeah velkas are cool. A little too small for my use. I'm waiting for a formd t1 to come into stock but looks like I'll be waiting forever for titanium..

          • +1

@ReaperX22: Yea, done a negative 25 offset. Have briefly tried a 65 watt limit but haven't tested it yet. Used some of that phase shift CPU paste sheet, it's really good but obviously a few degrees cooler doesn't make much of a difference. It's worth waiting for a case that you suits your purposes. Velkas are cool but need an update to fit modern gpu's, they are all getting thick and chunky.

Form T1 looks stunning and can fit heaps, too big for me but I'm envious of all that room for the CPU and GPU. I love that full metal build, basically a big mesh heat sink. Worth the wait and the pennies.

            • +1

@lew380: Haha yeah. For sure.. I've used the ncase m1 since 2013 so I spose it's worth waiting.. Worst case (ha), I'll buy a new main system (Am5 from am4) into my ncase. Then transfer it later.

  • There's also a few RX 9070 non-xt models that might be worth a look at that the Afterpay code applies to, such as the Sapphire Pulse 9070. Comes to $950 total, which may be worth the savings along with the greater power efficiency since it isn't being pushed as hard (or because you don't have a powerful enough PSU).

  • +1

Thanks, I'll bite. Building a Bazzite system, so AMD is the go. :)

  • Looking at building my first SFF computer, and live in regional qld, where it gets fairly hot in summer, can somebody give me some basic knowledge on the best cooling for a SFF, being a watercooled or air cooled solution? Also the best SFF cases to work in please. I thought i would ask, while there seem to be a few SFF builders here! Thanks.

    • +1

I have an matx build so not super duper small but everything is pretty crammed in.

I have a mesh case with a few fans and a full copper thermalright SFF fan and it seems to be okay at the moment. For water cooled vs air cooled I've always figured they are pretty similar so why introduce another point of failure of liquid so just use air cooling but I'm sure the fail rate can't be that high

    • Really depends on the components and case you're using. I'm not using super power hungry or hot components, so they're all crammed into an 8.1L case with an air cooler and a single case fan and neither my GPU/CPU get past 75C when gaming.

Of course the bigger case you go the more fans and better cooling situations you can fit. So again, really depends on the components you use

  • Hesitated too long and missed out :(

    • Back up if you're still keen

      • Missed it again lol

  • I be applying for TRS credit to remove GST
It will cost me A$940 or US$604. Happy to get the MSRP price delivered. :D
