You beat me to it. Excellent price especially with that 18-40 lens. I ordered one this morning.

For those who want a cheap and cheerful prime to go with this camera check out https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BFQNSJ66?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_…

It’s a manual lens but for the price it’s got decent performance

    • +3

Fantastic price to enter full frame compact body territory but definitely not a comparison for A7cii. Especially lack of view finder, lack of mechanical shutter (which results in subpar low light performance and dynamic range) and very limited lens selection make this vastly inferior to A7cii. And the 18-40 lens starting at high F number means, you will probably get better low light photos with your iPhone to be honest. Amateur photographers coming from iPhones, who would expect amazing out of camera results from this setup will be disappointed lol. Having said that, it's an amazing piece of kit on its own right, especially if you are entering into full frame space, value compactness over anything else, like videography, and don't mind doing bit of post processing. Don't forget, not many full frame cameras with a lens come at this price tag, especially one with 6.5 EV stabilisation (that's almost A7cii level at half the price).

      • -1

Exactly. The quality of low light photos from these near-pancake lenses would be more or less on par with what you'd get out of a modern premium smartphone.

Great price for the camera body though. Esp if you sell the lens(es)

    • I had the same pergear lens for Nikon ZF, it has a "flaw/character" on the rear focus.
And at f1.4 to f2, it's too soft in my liking. So no point in having it when it's unusable.
I bought it $130 and sold it $80

      • A lot of these manual lenses aren’t perfect optically (they need to cut corners to keep price down). These imperfections can actually give them an analog rendering instead of a sharp clinical look which I personally love. It depends on what you’re after. I wouldn’t recommend this lens for say landscapes where corner sharpness is important. I definitely wouldn’t call these lenses unusable though.

  • Digidirect has a better value kit imo, with a 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 lens for $1988.

    • +7

The 20-60 while an excellent lens, is largish for this body. The 18-40 is quite compact in comparison. Just the lens itself is about $800 on Amazon

  • +1

    what an absolute bargain

  • +1

ive also been half heartedly looking for bargains for Sony A7C ii - but this looks mighty tempting too just for fun lol

    • +2

CameraPro has A7Cii body only for $2599 now, not sure if you can pricematch it with Sony AU and grab their $225 off deal too. it is $2374 after the $225.

      • +1

Was hoping for closer to this deal

        • +1

          Crazy price.

If you're prepared to get a seconds camera, Sony Australia sells them occassionally. I got the A7RV for less than $3500 with less than 20 shutter count.

      • I tried this last night. They disable coupons when they price match.

      • Funny how many of us are chasing A7Cii. I've been on the search trying to grab one before heading to Japan next month. I understand the Japanese ones are language locked.

    • -1

This is not even comparable to A7cii. Probably only thing similar between the two cameras are 'being compact and full frame". A7cii is vastly superior in all other categories.

    • what do you guys use for RAW editing? I am using an old version CaptureOne20 Sony only edition which i paid for.

Anything newer than a7iii (what i got) will not be compatible.

New software is extremely expensive ($500USD+) and I hate subscription.

      • I use Lightroom on my iPhone (which is surprisingly capable). It’s $3.49 a month. I also love Photomator on iOS and am considering getting the lifetime sub for $199. One of the reasons I jumped on this S9 deal is because of built in LUT support. While editing RAW photos is fun, sometimes you just want to click photos and upload straight to social media.

      • Lightroom, I still pay for legit adobe as I need to use it for work too

  • +2

Noob question, how does this compare to a high-end phone camera like the iPhone 16 Pro?

    • +16

You're more likely to take the iPhone with you.

    • +10

taken in ideal conditions and light, you probably won't see much diff image quality wise. But once you actually edit a raw file it is a night and day difference when using images from bigger sensor cameras like this, just so much more details and dynamic range to play with. Then you have differences in lens looks (shallow depth of field etc), low light ability and the difference is even greater.

    • +15

The 16Pro has a good camera, but it's nothing compared to having a camera with a sensor larger than a pea…

Better image quality, better focus, none of that weird AI bokeh backgrounds.
That being said: The best camera is the one you have with you :)

    • +14

      It depends.
An average photo out of your iphone 16 pro will be more instagram ready than what you get out of the camera.
But the ceiling of a professional camera and the different things you can do with it are unmatched..

For a majority of the population a decent cameraphone is enough.

    • +43

You bring this to a cafe, buy a matcha, open a philosophy book, put the Lumix on the table and use your iPhone to take pictures of the Lumix

    • -1

I wouldn't call apple phones high end camera phones… the chinese android phones (such as Vivo) are crazy good in comparison.

iPhone would be good enough for social media but this deal is alright but the lens limits it to wide shots.

    • +2

The computational photography in most high end smart phones do a lot to make up for the small sensor size and limited lens/glass. You would notice the difference in photos especially if you get yourself a nice prime lens to go with it (I'm not a fan of zoom lenses personally). The low light performance and specifically for me the degree of control over things like shutter speed (I'm taking photos of people I really don't want such long exposures) in low light (versus my older 13pro) is massive. Having real shallow depth of field is great and the large sensor look is definitely a thing you will notice. I also prefer the degree of control over how the photos will look, I want photos to look like photos and I don't like any shadow or texture on faces being sandblasted away by processing. The tactile experience of holding a real camera body, the controls and intentionality of taking photos is also something that I enjoy (smartphone photos feel pretty disposable).

As others have/will note the best camera is the one you have with you, I got in the habit of of carrying a real camera and a small prime lens with a satchel with me most of the time but I'm about the only one I know that does. It's hard for me to accept the quality loss and look of smartphone photos having spent enough time with a full camera experience. If you don't think you will end up having a full camera with you often or finding enough time to use one I would probably encourage you to save the money and stick to a phone (if you never experience the difference to wont feel like you are missing anything either).

    • If you don’t zoom in/ print larger than 6 x 4 it prob doesn’t matter.

apparently 17 pro sensor will be way better but all just rumour atm

    • +2

Damn, so many well said comments that I don't have enough upvotes to spend here.

    • +1

Physical size of the sensor and hence physical size of the pixels. Imagine pixels being buckets used for collecting rain. Even if the number of buckets is the same, larger buckets will collect more rain, i.e. larger pixels will collect more light. More detail, less noise, more dynamic range (the number of levels between perfect black and perfect white).

  • Is this as good as a7cii?

    • +2

Nope, a7cii has a better sensor, an evf, better af and a partially mechanical shutter option. I think the a7cii doesn't have open gate video though, so this could be better if using it on a gimbal for video.

    • -1

The Lumix is more convenient/plug and play/point and shoot (I can only dream of Lumix LUTs)

The A7 you'll need a lot of post processing. If you show people Sony raw files it will trigger their gag reflex. However the hardware is much much better

Also, don't underestimate convenience. Using Sony makes my hobby feel like unpaid labor. I'm one good deal away from selling everything and jump shipping to Fuji

      • +3

This is exactly my thoughts - I used an A6000 for years, then an A7III. Fantastic tools (for their time, the best, couldn't ask for a better tool of the trade). But it turned my hobby into such a chore due to the post-processing to get the photos looking the way I wanted (or just half decent). I could never get the results I wanted SOOC. I've read that newer Sony colour science is much better, but I just don't want to go down that road again with Sony.

Eventually I sold up everything and and just used an iPhone, until on a whim I bought a second hand Fuji X100V for $1,200 (just before the social media hype changed made prices go silly). That camera re-ignited my love of photography, and I haven't turned back. I don't even shoot RAW anymore. I upgraded to the X100VI and now am keen to scratch the ILC itch, so I have an X-E5 coming.

The Fuji colours and recipes just really changed everything for me (I sound like a shill, but it worked for me).

        • +2

this>>> newer Sony colour science is much better

        • +1

There are presets available for creative looks/styles to make jpegs look good.

I find the whole editing process so tedious too. Kills the joy of just taking photos.

        • I love my Fujifilm X-T3, it really brings back the fun I felt with photography before digital photography arrived.

Having said that, I did order a Sony A6700 as well. Fujifilm has one weakness and that is their autofocus. It's not good at all for moving subjects, and keeps hunting in video. The Sony will be used for small paid gigs, but for fun I will use the Fujifilm.

        • The Fuji colours and recipes just really changed everything for me (I sound like a shill, but it worked for me).

If you think the newer sensors good, let me introduce you to Fujifilm X70 and Ricoh GR3 :) you will be blown away.

FYI don't forget to claim the bonus gifts by 30 September (you need to make the purchase by 31 August), which comprises:

    a 20K Anker Power Bank + SanDisk 256GB SD Card, worth $205RRP

    • Worth mentioning in the post. Good spot.

    • Nice missed this

  • This or Gr3 for point shoot? I know the Gr3 is not full frame. But these days with iphone cameras I mean where does this honestly sit?

    • That's a question of what sort of size tolerance you have, and how important interchangeable lenses are to you. This will have better image quality apart from the scenarios where electronic shutter is problematic and potentially low light since this kit lens is quite slow, but the gr3 is tiny and you can easily take it anywhere.

    • +1

The Af on this one will leave the gr3 for dead for one

    • i bought a GR3x for funsies, ended up being my most used camera just cause of the size. GR3x is easier to use right out of the box with the 40mm lens in terms of framing etc.

28mm is probably the better everyday carry just cause it's more versatile.

      • I will prob cave on next gen

Was after a gr for a while but I cannot abide by the artificial scarcity and price gouging

    • Love the compactness and convenience of my gr3. I do miss having a viewfinder, though

  • No EVF and worse dynamic range than an A7iii, which might ironically still be better for less for photography despite being a billion years old

(This is better for video/vlogging though)

    https://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Panasonic%20L…

    • What you say is true, not sure why people negged your comment (probably not knowing technicalities of cameras). Lack of mechanical shutter means a big deal and it affects the character of the photo, low light capabilities, bokeh and dynamic range. If someone doesn't know this, then they won't probably notice any difference anyways.

      • character of the photo, low light capabilities, bokeh and dynamic range.

not sure if trolling but my guy, the above are all affected by the sensor, not the shutter.

  • +1

    Is this claimable as well?
FREE LUMIX S 26mm F8 lens with every S9 purchase!
    5 year warranty as well!
    Great buy

    • That expires 31st Dec. Not sure if it was last year or this year though.

    • +1

Unfortunately not. That ended on 31 March 2025

      1. The offer commences on 23 May 2024 and closes for purchases at 11:59pm (AEDT) 28 February 2025 (“Purchase Period”). Claims open 23 May 2024 and close at 11:59pm (AEDT) 31 March 2025 (for online claims) (“Claim Period”).

I remember they've brought back these bonus offers before (specifically the bonus 50mm for the S5ii - I know this because I was the unfortunate soul/fool who bought the S5ii in between the bonus offers… Clearly, it is still annoying me haha!), but probably not worth risking missing out on this great S9 deal, just on the off-chance the 26mm is offered again.

  • As it's almost impossible to get the Canon Powershot SX740HS, does anyone have any recommendations on alternatives around that price point or even a little higher?

    Thank you

    • +1

      Sony ZV-1.

      • +1

        Second this.

      • Thank you. Is the one labelled 'vlogger' the same thing?

    • Is it sold out everywhere?

      • They all have a waitlist and it's not even guaranteed

  • I need an a7iv deal! Whats the hold up.

  • +1

Electronic shutter only is a deal breaker. So for those reasons, I’m out.

  • Fantastic deal. Been waiting for this kit to come down in price.

  • Great deal if you don't mind the colour

  • +1

  • -4

    Ah the tiktoker camera 😂

  • What sure smallest 24-70 2.8 you can get for this?

    • -1

L mount lenses are scarce and expensive. You better off investing in A7cii with readily and cheaply available f2.8 zooms (many options available for Sony including Sigma, Tamron and Samyang 3rd party lenses that are cheaper yet work brilliantly).

      • Sigma and Samyang is part of L mount alliance; so they will make L mount; plus there are more manufacturer is part of their alliances (DJI, Leica, Blackmagic, Sirui and Astro)

and price wise its relative with Sony or other FF lens

        • Sigma's doing the heavy lifting for the L mount alliance.

          be lumix
casually drops the best 50mm ever made (50mm f1.4)
          refuses to elaborate further
          leaves

      • +1

L mount lenses are scarce and expensive.

Soooo much cheaper compared to native Big 3s.

Scarce on used market yes, not scarce new, not expensive either. Most Sigma F1.4 primes could be had for a bit over 1k.

Lumix F1.8 lenses are decently priced. 50mm F1.8 could be had for under 500 brand new.

  • Is there still a sizeable market for large cameras? On holidays in past few years I have seen less & less people carrying cameras. I used to love trying different setups before Covid but don’t see myself carrying a camera anymore. It’s just too much work.
