Is Kogan Mobile Still The Best Option for Me?

Currently 16 days out from having to renew my mobile service. I am on Kogan Mobile's 365 day Small plan. Some info on my usage…

  • need unlimited calls/txt
  • 365 day expiry prepaid plans work well for me but would be OK with monthly plans with an undiscounted equivalent annual cost
  • don't need more than 50Gb data per year. I've currently only used up 36Gb on my S plan. Most I've used in a year has been 40Gb but I aim for 50Gb in case during the year I do a bit more domestic travel, need to hotspot for work, or need the mobile data if my home internet goes down
  • need voice mail
  • reception for my current service is acceptable around home, work and places I usually visit (though won't say no to Telstra network if the price is right… unlikely though)
  • access to good international roaming roaming plans not essential (I'd likely just get a travel esim). Would just be a nice back up option.

Historically I've stuck with Kogan mobile as the previously $120/yr (some years cheaper) cost and lack of dicking around with porting my number was super convenient. With the price now $150, I've been reviewing other options on the market.

From reviewing sites like WhistleOut, I see OnePass and Lyca have options around the $150 mark too but that's a discounted price with the main benefit being greater amount of data which means nothing to me when I use 40Gb or less per year. I may as well just renew with Kogan and save myself the hassle of porting my number, etc.

I also looked at the Woolworths Mobile options that come with a 10% off monthly shop. The problem though is that I don't do massive shops once a month so, with the cheapest plan with 10% shop discount being $25 for 30 days or ~$300/yr, I have doubts about whether I'd be able to recoup the extra $150 spent on such a mobile plan.

Does it look like I've exhausted my search or have I missed a viable option?

Kogan is never a best option for anything. Except if you collect spam emails.

I'm with Kogan as well and would like to know.

    • Judging by the replies, I think for users like us, Kogan's Small plan is probably still the best option. Shame… I was hoping a provider had released a competitive budget prepaid plan.

A while back, I had put my parents onto the Amaysim $119 60Gb prepaid plan sold at Woolies. Amaysim had just pulled the $120 plan from their website so it was lucky that we grabbed the last of these Amaysim packs from Woolies before they disappeared too. Amaysim have allowed customers to continue with the plan so my parents leave the services on auto renew.

I wish I had moved from Kogan's Small plan to this Amaysim plan at the time too but at the time I was content with Kogan's reception and that they gave twice the data for the same price.

      • It is a shame man. To be honest, I don't really want to be with Kogan - Reception is very mediocre, and their customer service is terrible. I've yet to find any other prepaid plans that match their sales so fingers crossed, it eventually comes.

  • Even I have switched from Hell$tra to Vodafail.
Less of a failure, u can buy their prepaid too!

If you're happy to pay $120 and you never exceed 50gb then why are you thinking the grass is going to greener on the other side.

    • You're right that I am happy to pay $120/yr for a prepaid mobile phone plan that has at least 50Gb of data… pity such plans no longer exists.

  • You've done your research, just go with what you find to be the best.

Low cost pre-paid SIM-only plans are a pretty saturated market, too many MVNOs, what it really comes down to is which network (Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone) has the best coverage in the areas you generally frequent.

All of the plans offered by the various MVNOs these days are all the same realistically - yeah, inclusions might be a bit different, or some might be a bit cheaper or a bit more, some tend to go on sale more often. It's not really worth spending too much mental energy.

    • Yeah, I'll probably just renew with Kogan.

Current sale on the 500Gb plan ends on the 24th so I'll just wait and see if they discount the Small plan. If not, I'll just turn on auto-recharge.

  • LOL.

I got an SMS from Kogan Mobile. Before opening, I thought it must be some sort of discount to keep me as a customer…. Nope, they're offering an extra 25Gb of data if I renew on the $180 Small plan.

    WTF?

$180… is this pre-empting some sort of price increase on the Small plan?
