  • Can we install it ourselves or need an electrician?

    • +24

You don't need an electrician but you require one.

    • +3

If you're swapping them out, pretty straight forward to DIY.

Disconnect power, test for dead, disconnect light, check which 3 wires are going where (positive, negative, ground), put those wires in the new fitting, reconnect.

      • +1

This, but if you get it wrong = death. Call a sparky. Drogba, question what happens when there is no earth/green wire? she"ll be right?

        • +15

If the power is off and tested for dead, there is no risk.

If wiring is different then agreed, stop and call an electrician.

This is all common sense stuff though. No wonder we have such a short supply of trades when people are not allowed to undertake the most simplest of tasks in their own home.

Would love to see the range of quotes people get from electricians to swap out one light fitting.

          • +4

@drogba: sounds like you are in Aus. shouldn't give out advice like this.

i moved here from the US where you can do simple AC/110v stuff. i'm no sparkies and scrach my head wondering as to why we can't even run ethernet cables in Aus.

            • -1

@StephBlanks: I just had an electrician out today, they won't even touch cameras/CCTV systems anymore due to regulations/some sort of required certification. Most are PoE..

              • @BrisbaneGoose: He probably didn’t know. And yes, there is a 1 day course he could take learning how to crimp an Ethernet cable.

              • +1

@BrisbaneGoose: I would argue that's just a bad sparkie, or he was too busy and did not want the work. All the ones I have dealt with could do all sorts of home networking installs including things like cameras etc.

While I dont condone doing your own high voltage electrical work, I think the rules around not being allowed to do structural ethernet cabling is a bit draconian. Most sparkies I know, agree.

The last time I had to install a bunch of bunch of POE Wifi APs in my house, I got my sparkie to run the ethernet cabling for me (fishing cables is probably the hardest part of a home networking install), but I just terminated the ends myself and patched them into a patch panel while the sparkie was running other ethernet cables.

            • @StephBlanks: You can run them and crimp them. There’s no loss of life if you stuff it up.
Someone does the wrong thing with a hot wire and watch a fire start (but again… it’s 3 wires… if you aren’t confident, pay for someone).

      • Disconnect supply. "power" is too generic. Disconnect power might have idiots pulling out wiring at the appliance end and testing the exposed, energised wires. Lol.

I got the wall lights a few years ago and they are good. Have them on schedule and you can have colour changing lights for Christmas / Halloween etc. Had an electrician swap out normal ones for these

  • Are these waterproof rated enough to be outside where it’s exposed to rain?

  • Or just stick one of these in your existing lantern fixture for $7 instead

    • +1

An option for older homes, probably not for newer builds with built-in LED's.

      • There's also LED equivalents with wifi capability

        • +1

I mean integrated LED fittings - there is no user accessible bulb etc to replace. So it's either have an electrician replace the whole thing or nothing.

Very new to home automation, what use case would the smart lantern be of benefit?

Can i set it up so that if my Eufy camera detects human between 12am to 6am, it flashes the wall lantern blue & red (to simulate police beacon)?

    • If you connect them both to Home Assistant, sure, if that's what you want to do…

    • There is a hue motion sensor so you could separate the lighting from the camera if it makes it simpler.

    • If you are using eufy then see if you can find this on sale

Looks 10x better than lantern lights.

I have some Hue stuff and eufy cameras, but I’ve never tried to have them both interact.

Not sure i'll be replacing my front porch lights with fairy lights anytime soon

Can anyone tell me what makes a $137 light different from a $13.7 one?

    • +2

      Philips™ Hue™

  • Considering you also get the enclosure i think this is pretty good if you needed to swap out your old light fittings with the carriage look like these, unless you can suggested cheaper…. 5$ AliExpress bulb with what equivalent aluminium carriage fitting ?
