Asus RT-AX82U V2 AX5400 Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 Router $299 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

90

Completely over Telstra support I decided to change ISP to Leaptel and at the same time ditch Telstra's shitty Smart Modem Gen 3.

No stock at my local JB so I paid $10.99 to have it delivered directly to my house via Uber.

For additional stability, features, etc. I would reccomend installing the Merlin firmware on this router as well https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/about (first link in the Fork and variants section as it is not on the supported list by the origional dev but is on the list of the fork)

no idea why you'd choose this over a Flint 2 at $176

    • Impulse buy really, I didn't do too much research on what to buy. I had a look at my main local dealers and compared what's available. Is it worth returning it and purchasing the Flint 2?

Flint 2 or even better Flint 3 is now on amazon for cheaper (I have it and it's excellent). with the 3 you also get wifi 7 at crazy speeds and also MLO.
Both run openwrt and have very nice features out of the box like adguard which I've been using for years and can't live without.

        • Thanks returned the router and ordered the Flint 3 came to $250

Buying a router without a 2.5g port is crazy with NBN upping the maximum speeds to 2gbps in September.

    • +4

not everyone is paying for gigabit speeds

      • Doesnt have to be for now, could be in a few years time you wish for faster speeds and be limited by the gigabit ports this router has.

        • +3

sure, but the VAST majority of people are on 50Mb or 100Mb download speeds and likely don't care about paying multiples in price for gigabit.
the turbo-users who are on gigabit speeds wouldn't even consider buying this router anyway.
so this deal is meant for the "average" internet user, and is perfectly fine for them.

          • @bAps: The average internet user on <100Mbps isn't paying $300 for a router either

          • @bAps: Good news for everyone on 100mbps FTTP will get a free upgrade to 500mbps.

I am just trying to inform people why this might not be suitable for them if they might want to try out the 2gig speeds comings soon.

          • @bAps: I did just upgrade to the gigabit plan from Leaptel xD is this not ideal compatibility?

I don't plan to go any faster as it is already overkill for me.

Is there something else you recommend as I haven't touched it yet.

          • @bAps: @bAps: A bunch of those 100mb plans are being upgraded to 500mb later this year. Those people probably never expected to have 500mb speeds. Never know what you'll need in a few years time.

        • I completely agree with this. The router usually will last for a long time and should also go through another speed boost in its lifetime. Its worth getting a router with a 2.5g port even at this point.

    • Do you have any recommendations as I’m looking to test the 2000/500 speed next month

I bought the BE86u a couple months ago and it's been perfect so far, the be88u has slightly faster wifi speeds but nothing major so I went with the better for actor router.
There's a good youtuber called landpet that has videos for both which show wifi speeds at 3 different distances.

      • I went went with the Orbi RBKE962 and very happy with it. This thing is a beast. I did consider WiFi 7 but as the only device I have is my phone, in the end, Quad-Band won over Tri-Band.

    • I was tossing up with this and the Netgear RAXE300 Nighthawk which did have a 2.5g port for the same price, reviews weren't that great so opted for the Asus.

For context, I was on the Telstra 100mbps plan which I've upgraded to the 1 gigabit Leaptel which is completely overkill but still costs less than what was paying with Telstra.

    • I barely know anyone who is paying over 100. Lets be honest unless you're doing multiple 4K streams (and paying through the nose for that), what's the difference?

  • i have this modem from Optus gaming plan about 3 years ago, and it is still going excellent. they even sent me their latest shitty smart modem released this year, there is no comparison, this one is awesome.

note that optus modem firmware is slightly different, but functionality is identical, the features that are not available on optus modem i don't need them.

    • You can change the Optimus firmware to match the dsl ax82u. The function from the Optus one is more locked down. Couldn't remember on-top of my head but I have changed mine to run merlin fully unlocked :)

      • excellent news, i saw that on whirlpool but when i tried to do it, i failed somewhere i dont know. what benifits that you got ? is it worth it? also, do you have to run some commands everytime you restart the modem? when did you do it?

        • Worth it for me, I have a script that runs the commands on start up.

If you have used other asus router you would easily see what is missing. Sorry I don't remember them on top of my head.(Edit: pretty sure the Optus one doesn't let U do asus AI mesh, VPN layout should also be different )

Did it half a year ago. Got the Optus one second-hand

  • Does this have a modem in it? I can't see if it's VDSL complaint? I need one for my FTTB setup

    • +3

      No it doesn't.

      Asus RT-AX82U = router.
      Asus DSL-AX82U = VDSL2 modem/router all-in-one.
