Deeply invested in the Unifi ecosystem, I've been looking for PoE options to expand my network to power some AP's and cameras with 2.5Gb uplink and the Unifi options are expensive to get all that.

If you can drop 2.5Gb you're limited to ~52W options ie. USW-Lite-8-POE for around $206 or the Ultra 8 but to go up to 210W you're looking at $359.

For 2.5Gb you're looking at Flex 2.5G which is around $300 but you need to buy that 210W adapter for around $199 or so which comes with the Ultra 8 and it gets expensive at least $499.

So at $670 this looks like a really great option to give you some network expansion options. So much so I decided to scrap all my third party Tenda and Mercusys PoE and go all in times 2.

Do let me know if you think there are better Unifi options than this

who needs this for home? unless labs?

    • Depends, do you want/need everything cabled.

      im waiting on 10000/10000 nbn

NBN is about to upgrade it's max plans from 1 gig to 2 gig in Sept.

I am using 35 of 48 Unifi switch at home. no labs, just a home stuff - Cams, APs, computers, media devices. Unifi switches are pretty good as they can do passive PoE. So I am converting battery powered devices to be PoE powered if I can. And of course one cable for network power a way better then wifi/battery.

      • 'Passive PoE' aka 'Burn my house down mode'

    • People who consider home networking a hobby

  • So much so I decided to scrap all my third party Tenda and Mercusys PoE and go all in times 2.

Are you using all 16 ports?

    • +1

My extension cabling is a bit of a hodge podge so I need to push my network to different places whilst supporting existing areas both requiring 2.5G and PoE

It's a bit of a mess but would be more expensive to re-cable it

To start with I'm using at least 8 ports on each switch so leaving some room for expansion: AP's, Cams, lights etc.

I understand UniFi PoE switches are appealing, but I simply cannot stomach the price (especially the AUD retail prices here). With the recent 10Gbps products introduced by Ubiquiti (UCG-Fiber, the XG series access points, switches), I've decided for gigabit ethernet PoE+ and 2.5 Gbps PoE+, I'll just go for cheap options (but still get managed switches so VLAN and PoE control per port features are still available).

KeepLink 9-Port Multi-Gigabit Managed Switch with 8-2.5Gbps PoE and 1-10Gb SFP+ Uplink is ~$100 (wait for discount codes to lower the price further). 10Gbps switches, I've opted for MikroTik and TP-Link managed switches with some L3 features. The reality is that once you setup the network, you are not going to change it very often.

Also, Ubiquiti really needs to improve UniFi Network's IPv6 support (especially on the subnetting side). Its IPv6 support is still subpar.

  • Cost about roughly another $99 if you want to convert to 1U rack.

    • What do you mean? Spec sheet says it includes rack mount.

      • That's odd, mine definitely didn't. Lots of 3D prints around though which is what I did.

      • Nope, its optional.

      • Includes wall mount. Not rack mount.

      • I have just bought this witch about 2 weeks ago from computer alliance (struggled with price point, but one hell of a feature set for home).

It only comes with brackets for wall mounting, you need the optional 19” rack mount kit if you want it to go into a full width rack: UACC-Pro-Max-16-RM Ubiquiti Pro Max 16 Rack Mount Kit.

As the switch is only about 30cm wide this kit does one side long the other short. Long side also has a box for the power supply to go into and then the box fits in the long side. Is reversible so can make it left or right for then power.

        • +3

That's so trash, it would cost them cents to include that in the box, for such an expensive device.

    • If you decide to go that path might as well pay that much for the full rack 24 Port.

      • In my case I was constrained by rack depth, 230mm between posts. So only one that fit with the features I wanted.

  • I'd love to have the integration with my UDM Pro but the $60 8-port Keeplink 2.5GB + $70 8-port TP-Link POE+ will do until prices drop more.

    • Or this KeepLink?

      • Already had the TP-Link from a while back, otherwise that Keeplink is a great price

      • Is this seamlessly compatible if hooked to a gateway on one side and say ubuquiti ap on the other end? (Understand you cant mange the switch, but who needs to manage a switch lol)

        • I have both my Ubiquiti APs connected through the TP-Link POE Switch and they both adopt and can be managed via the UDM Pro.

        • You can use 3rd party switches. It's just the topology diagram will no longer be accurate.

If you use VLANs, then you might still prefer managed switches. I bought a 8 port D-Link managed gigabit PoE+ switch on clearance from OfficeWorks for $35. A Keeplink 8 port 2.5Gbps PoE+ managed switch (+ 1x 10G SFP+ port) is roughly $100. However, they were/are cheap because they are Layer 2 only managed switches. For 10Gbps switches, I opt for ones which support some Layer 3 features.

There are other dirt cheap options if you are willing to use 2nd hand Cisco gears and don't mind the fan noise.

Ubiquit's switch options are just bizarre at the moment. It seems like they deliberately try to gimp every model in at least 1 way.

    • Yeah, totally agree. Ubiquiti's seems to be taking a leaf out of the mobile phone brand playbook… Every model - often including their respective flagship phone models - seems to be missing one or two random features.

One small consilation is Unifi seems to finally be getting some options for 2.5Gbps devices.

This is all they need to do the keep most people happy I think. I just want a 16-port switch with up/down SFPs where all the ports are actually 2.5Gb, none of this 4x2.5gb and 12x1gb rubbish. That should be a basic, standard 16 port switch option, yet somehow it's missing.

Agree. I'm in the same boat.

I resorted to using a USW Flex 2.5G 8 (pricey and hard to find in the non-POE version) as a top-of-rack switch for my tiny-pc homelab setup. It at least has 2.5G on all eight of the main ports.

          • @bobbieb: How much did you pay for your USW-Flex-2.5G-8? I caved in a got one for $312 + credit card surcharge. Was tempted to get the PoE version, but the official power adapter is expensive (AliExpress 3rd party ones are a lot cheaper, but not sure about using one of those).

Also have a KeepLink 9-Port Multi-Gigabit Managed Switch with 8-2.5Gbps PoE and 1-10Gb SFP+ Uplink for about $100. Ubiquiti switches here are expensive. USW-Flex-2.5G-8 is a basic L2 managed switch so there is certainly a big profit margin on that at the moment.

This Ubiquiti UniFi Pro Max 16-Port PoE++ is an old model and released before 2.5 Gbps switch chipset price drop.

It's a pity Cisco switches are loud. It's possible to get a second hand 24 port 10Gbps UPoE (PoE++) Cisco switch for $360 or lower.

You did slightly better than me… I only managed $329.00 delivered a few months ago, and that was after finding a coupon that actually worked. I was pleasantly surprised that the store reached out to confirm that I knew that I'd ordered the non-POE version.

I have a USW-Pro-24-PoE driving most of my POE stuff at the moment… the 1Gb POE ports are fine for my cams. The 10Gb SFP uplink runs stinking hot though.

              • @bobbieb:

SFP+ ethernet / RJ45? I try to use DAC if possible but can't avoid using RJ45 (at 10gbps, they do run hot).

Also, would have been great if USW-Flex-2.5G-8 could be powered through PoE+ via one of the 2.5Gbps LAN port (like the 5 port version), rather through the 10Gbps RJ45 port. 10Gbps PoE+/++ switches are expensive.

                  SFP+ ethernet / RJ45?

Haha, yep. The USW-Pro-24-PoE for the cams is on the other side of the house from everything else, so DAC wasn't practical, optical would have been overkill, so went with the existing run of CAT6.

(Ubiquiti's own RJ45 SFP+ transceivers didn't wanna do even that relatively short run, thankfully a pair of cheapie TP-Link modules did the trick.)

  • Paid $692 for this 2 weeks ago. :(

  • +2

There’s a $15 coupon when you buy it through Amazon Business.

I just selected redeem right under the product image. Takes it down to $655!

  • Anyone know why this one is so much cheaper? Looks to be the same just longer shipping time.

    • No PoE

      • Oh that would do it.

    (2) 10G SFP+ ports

Can this be used as one uplink and one downlink / regular 10 gb lan ?

  • already have one of these to go with my UDM-SE.. looks nice in the rack

  • I've been on the hunt for this but have been eyeing the 24s, but dispatching 1 to 4 weeks? Cmon.

    • This one has no fans unlike the 24, if that means anything to you

I couldn't update from 7.0.50 which it shipped with to 7.2.11 so I had to use 7.1.26 manual update from this page: https://community.ui.com/releases/UniFi-Switch-7-1-26/33e34c…

After that was successful I could go to a later firmware
