This previously popular gigabit Power over Ethernet switch is back on sale for an ATL. This one features 8 ports with gigabit PoE (up to 30W each port, 135W PoE budget), 2 gigabit uplink ports and an AU plug. One of the advantages of the two uplink ports is that you can connect to your router and another switch without sacrificing one of the PoE ports.

    Solid units

  • I'm new ot PoE switches. I could see TPlink switches have the feature that restarts the connected devices when they are not responding (to pings?) by disconnecting power to the corresponding ports. Does the OP's switch have that feature?
    Thanks

    • +3

Yes it does. I own one

    • Its called "AI POE"

  • +11

    "AI"
    Lol.

    • Every single post without fail. PoE watchdog basically.

  • Can you plug your non-PoE devices into this switch? Since it's an unmanaged switch I'm assuming you can't turn off PoE power per port.

    • +4

You can plug non-PoE devices into the switch and it's not going to draw extra power. They're designed to negotiate power delivery with a handshake and there won't be any handshaking with non-PoE.

    • +1

This switch supports 802.3af/at PoE, which is considered active PoE so there is a negotiation phase and if the device connected to the port can't complete the handshake, the switch won't send power to that port. So it is safe to connect non-PoE devices to the switch.

There are passive PoE switches (i.e. 24V PoE switches). Those ones, if PoE is turned on for a port, power is sent. For passive PoE, you most likely prefer a managed switch. Managed 24V passive PoE switches generally default every port's PoE to false.

    • +1

The 802.1at/af standard doesn't send power by default. The connected device has to request it, I think this is done by a resistor across the pairs to indicate what power is required.

    • Thanks for the replies :)

  • Any recommendations on 2.5Gb alternatives? Something similar to this model which is very expensive now for whatever reason

  • If I have currently a TP-Link Litewave Gigabit (LS1008G), would there be big reasons to swap and get this?

    • +2

If you need to power PoE devices then yes.
      Otherwise, no.

  • Over time i added more and more PoE injectors to my home setup. This unit here cleaned it all up. Works well for the price. Powers some APs as well as a PoE touchscreen for me.

    • Nice what are the touchscreens?

      • Control4 T3 7" inwall touchscreen.

  • Still waiting on a cheap 16 port PoE switch. The price jump from 8/10/12 up to 16 seems crazy so I'm currently running two switches, but I'd love to clean it up.

  • I've got this to power my security cameras and a single uplink from the switch to the NVR in another room. I didn't want all the network cables from the cameras coming to the room, so I set the switch up in the linen cupboard, dropped the cables to it and have one cat6 going to the NVR in my office. Works perfectly.
