    Just in time for summer!

What is it exactly that makes their prices worth it?

    • brand name

    • +2

      The apostrophe.

No doubt they're better quality than Kmart clothing, but the pricing is extortionate simply because some people will pay it to advertise the label to others.

      • That's life baby

I’m going to comment preemptively before the Kathmandu cheer squad arrive. Happy to be negged. Go for it.

I bought a Theta AR back in 2014 to do 3 months in Siberia during the winter. and it is an absolute tank of a jacket. 11 years later it is rock solid still. That being said, it’s probably not going to see its potential if you’re just walking to work on George St, even in this weather.

However if you’re looking for a ‘buy it for life’ reliable jacket, and you’re fairly outdoorsy, it’s hard to go past the brand. I can’t comment for the recent quality as I do hear a lot of the range is predominately made in China now a days.

    • What if you did just want a jacket for around town, obviously don't need the same insulation level, but the durability/longevity yes.

      • Something like the Beta SL would be hard to beat. You miss out on the Goretex Pro membrane from the flagship models like the Theta or Alpha but still get the long term investment / quality of the brand.

        • If you don't get cold hands or wear gloves the Alpha and Beta are good shells. They are made to be worn with a harness so the pockets are high up.

For daily use the Atom/Proton is a bit nicer and much more quiet, the swosh swosh noise from GoreTex can drive people mad.

Highly considering in getting the Proton Hoody in the Stratus colour.

    • Who else goes to Siberia?

Yeah planning to after reading the review just to verify if comment is legit.

I have an Alpha SV and Atom Hoody that was made in Canada and another Alpha/Atom one that is made in China. Quality wise they are the same. Made in China set have been in use for the last 3 years and haven't had any issues. Made in Canada set is starting to fail and is nearly 15 year old.

Ever since it was bought out by a Chinese company they have marketed towards a more fashion brand than technical and the prices just keep going up and up. I'd still buy it due to its reliability though.

    • Have some of their stuff for skiing and it's rock solid, though it's increasingly becoming a status symbol for street wear rather than for their outdoor capabilities. I see more of their logos walking around in the city than on the mountains these days :P

You can honestly spend half the amount of money and get a technical piece that's just as capable, from a still fairly high end brand (Patagonia etc.), than paying the Arc tax IMO.

Cotopaxi is a good alternative for street wear.

    • Gore tex isn't bifl they delaminate

  • +1

+1 for this deal to pretend I can afford this.

  • Thank god the trend seems to be dying, these are way too ugly to be a fashion item. Like why would you want to look like one of the mountain people if you care about looking good and fashion.

    • +2

Gorpcore isn't going anywhere my friend.

      Veilance is their fashion line

      Veilance exists

  • Great Deal. bought 2 for myself and 1 for my neighbour.

As a motorcyclist that rides in pouring rain and mud for 8 hours for fun, let me tell you, if you're going to be operating in extreme wet&cold environments… forget that uber-gore-tex-5.2-layer-membrane-laminate BS.

Just wear 2 cheap rain jackets (no one will know!). Guarantee you'll be dryer than that this $920 jacket.

    • If you are on a motorbike you can just wear canvas or a nylon raincoat.

The only (debatable) reason for goretex is it "breathes" but for Australia's climate that is extremely dubious as even our high alpine is a very wet and damp affair.

Ultimately you will sweat and get damp or get rain/snow on and get damp.

      Neither is particularly comfy.

  • what about aldi ski jacket?
