  • Hard seller to trust, only been around for 3 months so I'd be suspicious you are getting a rebox unit.

    • +4

All CPUs on AliExpress are OEM trays and not boxed retail units. That's no secret. Alternatively if you want a more established store, SZCPU have this listing for US$273.58, except no TCB/SB cashback.

Since this is a Big Save product this applies to everyone just in case

      Free returns within 90 days
Not satisfied with your order? Send it back within 90 days after order was placed. The first return on each order is free (up to 5 times per month).

No need to pay for postage. They'll give you an Auspost label to print.

        waiting 7800X3D under AUD$300… :P

      • Retail boxed has been cheaper than this before via Amazon.

        • Sure but it's just a box. This ends up cheaper when you factor in both AliExpress and SB/TCB cashback.

          • +1

@Clear: When you factor in gift cards and cashbacks for Amazon major sales, and the 3 year warranty, the small gap is acceptable.

Also as you've pointed out before, the AliE cashback is a 30-day credit, though it's arguably good so long as it doesn't impact site codes or future third-party cashbacks.

            • +1

@jasswolf: Assuming that once off deal was in a major cashback sale and you can get 21-25% off gift cards to match. Each to their own. This is the cheapest available by far.

              • @Clear: I'm assuming 10-12% gift cards and 12% cashback, which would put it in the same space as this current deal, but without needing to make a further purchase to maximise value.

                • +1

@jasswolf: Too bad none of the cashback has ever aligned with that once off deal. That deal could be obtained for $380 at the time and you can this roughly A$330 after all discounts and credit.

                  • @Clear: True, but I'd be expecting an AM4 sell-off for the rest of the year, so that should match up with end of October through to end of November.

Not something I'm personally chasing, just saying this isn't one of the better deals seeing as it's in the same ballpark as an 7800X3D offer.

                    • +2

@jasswolf: It's not a gaming CPU and it's not AM5 so the 7800X3D really is no comparison. Extra cache means bugger all compared to core/thread count.

Gaming and new build? Sure 7800X3D. Productivity while maximising AM4 socket? This.

as nice as this would be I can't imagine it being worth the upgrade over a 5900x at this stage

  • Currently on a 3 3300x/1070ti combo.

Looking to upgrade my PC at some point. Should I get this or a one of those 7 7700s that pop up every now and then?

    • +3

If you plan on sticking with the AM4 platform the 5700X when on sale for ~A$100 is best value for gaming but the 1070ti will be the bottleneck. If you're going for a new system + future proofing the 7700 would be best.

    • yea get a 5700x for your CPU

and perhaps a second hand 3070 or 3060ti if your on a budget and playing at 1080p,.

    • 7800X3D would be the play if you're upgrading to AM5, but alongside your GPU that's basically a full system rebuild bar the case, power supply and storage.

There's RTX 5070 Ti & Ryzen 7800X3D systems starting at $2300ish, but 7700 & RTX 5070 would be about $1500ish. Here's a good seller for that, with a few other options.

For this gen, I would stick to the 5070 for 1440p, or 5070 Ti if you want to push 4K.

  • Saw similar pricing on amazon recently.

Personally my next upgrade will probably be to latest gen with 128gb shared ram for gpu, so i can do LLMs.

  • Is this particularly even worth it considering the 7800X3D was $440 AUD? if you're already am4 makes sense i guess

    • +3

No it's not a gaming CPU and best suited for those already on the platform. For example I went from a 3900X to 5950X for my home server where cores/threads matter.

If you're doing a new build, AM5 socket with 7800X3D is best value/performance for gaming.

      • Ah, my bad, thanks for letting me know chief.

    • Depends what you want it for, and how much you want to pay. You'll be able to assemble a fast system on the cheap with this, cheap mb, cheap CPU, cheap DDR4 RAM.

  • Used to mine monero with this, very good cpu.

  • Worth it to upgrade from a 3700x in 25?

    • For productivity yeah
For gaming just get a 5700x3d, or if you can find a decent price on a 5800x3d on mp

  • The recent 5900xt deal was better.

    • This is cheaper after cashback and credit though.

  • Amazon is $393.66 now. I really want to pull the trigger…but would it drop more next year? I am currently still happy with my 3700x. And recently upgraded to 128GB Ram. My PC usage is ~90% coding, ~10% gaming (when I find the time). Should I get 5950x?

    • +1

It really depends how big your code base is and how long it takes to compile. Sure, 5950x is gonna be faster for really long compiles but unless your workflow is being held back by CPU, there might not be a point other than future proofing a little more.

Saying that, a 7700x and a cheap b850 might net you greater gains (due to ipc gains) than a 5950x for slightly more money.
