Recent price hikes from Aldi has brought their much loved dark roasted coffee beans to $18 per kilo.
As someone who's not too fuss about their beans, this looks like a good deal to me comparatively.

I prefer Smooth. But yeah same great special as usual.

  • +9

Ground coffee loses flavour & aroma faster than whole beans due to increased surface area. It can also be stale and less flavorfull if not used quickly.

    • +7

Good point, I actually intended to post the whole beans instead of ground- amended now, thanks!

    • I want to be able to grind my own beans, but I just can't afford it unfortunately at the moment. So I'm greatful to be able to find some preground coffee for now occasionally, even if it becomes worse after a couple of weeks. (Though, it doesn't usually last that long)

      • +2

I mean you can get a Kingrinder for $60-80 for a lower end one, or $120 for the Kingrinder K6 and that's basically getting to the point where anything more is diminishing returns. As long as you don't mind hand grinding (it takes me like 20 seconds if that to grind 20g) and it's better than any cheap electric grinder you will get. It's not really that prohibitive imo

        • Thanks for the recommendation, I actually have the Kingrinder K6 in my watchlist for when I have the ability to get it. I'm keen, but have other monetary priorities first and a better coffee, while nice, doesn't come above good health and a good home. Just wanted to add my view on the preground coffee since I'm sure there are others who are in a similar situation :)

      • +1

another vote for the kingrinder k4 or k6, been using one for years now and it's rock solid.

I find the Aldi beans, particularly the medium roast, to be much nicer than the Harris ones but your tastes may vary. Have yet to find a bean at a comparable price point that is even close to Aldi med.

    • I wish I liked any of the Aldi beans. They are ok for cheap, but just lack some depth I can't put my finger on

      • +8

The Brazil single origin beans are good; I'd even say very good. $25/kg now.

        https://www.aldi.com.au/product/lazzio-brazil-coffee-beans-1…

        • I haven't tried those. Will give it a shot.

        • +3

at that price point, you may consider Lime Blue coffees when on special. They're way more premium than any Aldi coffee.

          • @vrsac: Which LB beans do you recommend for milk-based coffee?

            • +2

@OzHan: @OzHan I use the Brazil Sao Paulo from @LimeBlueCoffee for my milk coffee using a fully auto machine. I've tried a number of different ones that come up in OzB but keep coming back to this one.

              Obvious caveat on YMMV.

              @OzHan: https://limebluecoffee.com/products/500g-4kg-colombia-cauca-…

This one is great price as it's on special at the moment. As tastes differ, you should try them all and select your favourite.

My personal favourite is Peru Chanchamayo Grade 1 Organic Single Origin. It's currently $55/Kg and on special, around $28.

            • +1

@OzHan: Brazil Sao Paulo Single Origin - regularly on sale for $32/kilo
              To quote from their website:-
"Beverage Base = Absolutely incredible white, it's the best suited Single Origin for milk based coffee we've ever featured. That said it's still delicious as a black coffee."

          • +2

@vrsac: I've tried lots of Lime Blue offerings & also the Airjo ones. Occasionally one of the Lime Blue limited offers will be exceptionally good, but Aldi medium still wins for me idk.

I have had one iffy bag of aldi beans that tasted like nothing, but all the others have been pretty excellent for the price.

          • @vrsac: @vrsac, @Chinerama, @pablo1, @tunzafun001, @Jimothy Wongingtons,

Any suggestion of a coffee-grinding-machine @ an ok-pricing? like to try LimeBlue-beans & taste the differences compare to grounded-Lavazza-Qualita Oro-250g. Will be using Breville-Cafe-Roma-machine, thanks.

            • @ab c: I’m just using the inbuilt grinder on my Eletta lol

            • @ab c: If you can stretch your budget, then, this is a very decent, budget grinder which I own:
              https://www.breville.com/en-au/product/bcg820

              • @vrsac: Stretch your budget , more like a fortnightly mortgage payment 😱

            • @ab c: Sorry mate, I use a fully auto so the grinder is built into the machine. I'm not a coffee connoisseur, and just like a smooth easy to down flat white.

            • @ab c: You cant beat the Sunbeam EM440 for under $100. Got mine for $40 off memory. It produces more consistent shots than my Barista Express's built in grinder and a Breville pro. But mine is now 10 yrs old. Hopefully the new ones are just as good. I remember some saying the new ones might need shims (used to be free from Subeam or a couple of bucks online)

Never shimmed min, and can 100% confirm it can grind the Lime Blue beans perfectly (for me on setting 9). So nowhere near needing a shim.

We chucked some grinds under a microscope to compare with a Niche and Breville. Very little in it. Grinds were more consistent than the Breville (pre Barratza burr model).

              • @tunzafun001:

We chucked some grinds under a microscope

Wow very nerdy, I like it haha.

                • +1

@WatchNerd: Yeah, so much BS in the coffee realm…
                  DYOR is an absolute must.

            • @ab c: I bought one of these at the time:-
              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/878252
It suits my use situation (mostly espresso, but sometimes cold press so different grind settings are useful. Grind settings for different beans also useful).
The video review in the listing is worth watching.

        • Its decent quality, but price wise getting very close to the specialty beans on special.

      • Try outside the box puck prep (go coarser/ finer) / shot longer / shorter, temp higher / lower.

It will be one of them. I can make a coffee with Aldi beans that tastes horribly thin, and I can make a nice textured coffee. Normally a sign of a good bean in my opinion.

Haven't use them for a while. But off memory I went shorter shot at a slightly higher temp.

    • +2

Completely agree. Especially because you can read the roast date off the side of the bag and usually find something less than 4 weeks old.

    • +1

Coles beans were pretty good as well I thought. My normal go to is Limeblue Brazil SO for reference of taste buds. Used to love Aldi Brazil, but was a bad year or two there. Havent tried again since 2023. Sounds like might be good this year?

      • Which coles ones exactly?

        • Pretty sure they meant the Coles brand medium/dark. They are $18 per Kg and as I was not near

an Aldi last week, I got these in medium and thought they were ok too, slighly below Aldi medium.

          • @ozhunter68: Yep… well… I froze a heap when they were going out for $6 a bag!
Stopped half way through and cycled through Limeblue, Aldi, and Primo.

I had them just above Aldi. Primo firmly at the bottom (and unfortunately they stuffed my order and sent it twice…still got 6Kg to go). Their full dark is ok (one of the cheapest), the rest are trash. In fairness, I dont really like Harris either.

    • +1

I tried the Aldi Brazil Medium roast and it's nice but very acidic, didn't sit well with me so I went back to the Grinders Crema.

I also was buying the Veneziano Elevate for 68 dollars a bag, really nice coffee but I'm a big drinker (3 double shots a day) + what my wife drinks a day, one or two double shots, so was breaking the bank at that price.

  • How much are the Aldi medium beans now? My espresso machine was out of commision for a while so haven't bought beans in a couple of months.
I saw they were like $23 on Doordash which I thought was a wild ~$8 markup from regular, but I guess not.

      • Thanks mate I forgot that Aldi has a website.

    • +1

      $20 for 1 kg

    • +1

i draw the line at the $28 luxe ones - but kinda considering another 3kg buy of the lime blue and just freezing the beans

      • +1

I've had some Lime Blue in the freezer for 6 months and they still taste good. Just have to make sure no moisture gets in.

        • yeah we are struggling though a half kilo of Aldi Medium that my wife put in the fridge without sealing the bag at all.
          Taste is… odd.

          • +2

@theguyrules: the luxe is quite good if you dont wanna commit to a 2.5kg lime blue order (2.5kg because free shipping lol)

was also gonna print one of these bad boys

            • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I have tried luxe, I can't remember which one though. Medium is always good to me when not frozen poorly.

        • +2

yeah i double zip lock to ensure as am paranoid.

though last 2kg i smashed within 5 weeks lol

  • +2

Hmmm, I already have 2 bags of these beans from the last sale in july, Probably shouldnt have more sitting around and aldi medium are $19.99

  • Time to make ice cream

  • I’m a bit confused and hoping for some clarification. For example, when it comes to Aldi coffee, I prefer medium roast over dark roast. My favorite is Aldi’s Colombia Single Origin. I’ve also tried Lime Blue Coffee’s Moments of Memories blend, which I enjoy just as much as Aldi’s Colombia. So, I believe my preference leans toward medium roasts.

Now, looking at Harris Coffee, they offer three options:

    1. Harris Smooth Coffee Beans (Medium roast)

    2. Harris Strong Coffee Beans (Dark roast)

    3. Harris Very Strong Coffee Beans (Very dark roast)

My confusion is mainly around the “Very dark roast.” Is Harris’s Very Dark Roast equivalent to Aldi’s Dark Roast? If that’s the case, would Harris’s Dark Roast actually be closer to Aldi’s Medium Roast? Or am I overthinking this, and perhaps the Harris Smooth Coffee Beans are simply the closest match to Aldi’s Medium Roast?

    • +1

      Go Smooth.

    • Aldi's dark roast is between Harris medium and Harris dark.

    • +1

Go smooth. Smooth is their replacement for Colombian.

Don't be tricked into thinking dark or strong is "better" or more macho. If you want strong coffee just make it stronger. Unless of course you like the taste of ashtrays.

      • +2

yep, just use more coffee if you want stronger flavour , especially if you like milk based drinks vs straight espresso.

  • ill give it ago

  • +2

Can't say for sure that they're better, but Grinders Cafe Q beans are half price at Coles at the moment=$25/kg.

  • I can't get it sent to Darwin to my home address or Po Box :(

Sorry, Harris Strong Coffee Beans, 1kg can't be shipped to the address you selected. Please remove the item or select another address.

  • +3

I'm not sure about you, but from experience, buying fresh things from Amazon is not a good idea. If you care about your coffee, get them where you can see the roast date.

  • used to buy vittoria mountain when on special but they seem to have price hiked and haven’t seen 1/2 price for a wile in coles or woolies.

  • Does anyone know how fresh these are? Does it say the roast date anywhere on the website?

I have the same issue with the Grinders Crema which I really like but I feel like it's a couple of months old which is terrible.

    • +1

the supermarkets don’t stockpile coffee, it’s a short logistic trip from roaster to warehouse to shop, with vittoria i did the phone calls to get info, and it was under 2 weeks between roast and on shelf, i’d imagine woolies and cole’s don’t want shelf space for coffee that doesn’t sell, and they want your cash before invoice from supplier is due, so doubt grinders being local roast has been on the shelf months, lavazza is roasted in italy so usual sea freight logistics but packed in nitrogen.

      • I often saw DC bags that were four months old.

    • i also think creama is pretty good, i think because its lighter roast. Gonna those cafe q ones from amazon matching coles price.

      • Amazon usually has good S&S prices but the price is quite high now, I used to get the 1k for about 18 dollars, gone are those days.

It's just annoying that they never include the roast date.

        • yeah but from taste and grinding - i dont think its been stale or old from amazon for me.

          • +1

@Charles Bakeley: I think Amazon moves a lot more than Coles and Woolies do so theirs would be a bit fresher.

I always store what I am not using in the freezer as it's keeps it fresh and I have the glass tubes for single dosing so I package the extra in small sandwich zip page of 210 grams in each bag for extra freshness.

    • got mine today, expiry is 27 july 2026
so id assume roasted on the 27 july 2025

      • Yeh got mine yesterday as well. Says July 2026 so also seems like a July roast batch. Need to retweak my grinder.

        • I can’t dial these in, the finest setting it’s just like water is pouring thru them.
They also smell like soil when pulling a shot.

Normally I’m good with a setting around 6-9 on Aldi beans, Toby’s estate and campos beans and these are at 1 and still can’t pull a decent shot.

          • @Far Cough: Yeh I had to readjust my inner burs to be able to grind them fine enough, never again.

They smell great as beans but smell terrible when grinded. Grinders can do better considering the asking price is usually $50.

            • @itsmoe: Yeah they smell like soil. I ended up saying they aren’t good to Amazon and got my money back.

              • @Far Cough: I should have done that but I've already put them in small bags and chucked them in the freezer, just won't buy them anymore.

  • Probably a dumb question, but does anyone know if the caffeine content differs in the different varieties? Or is it just flavor?

    • +2

It varies from medium to dark roast, there is a tiny bit less caffeine in the darker roast. Obviously Decaf has close to no caffeine at all.

And depending on the roasting method, the taste will change. Also depending on finer or coarser coffee can make the taste change, you have to work out the grind size and the weight depending on your coffee machine and your liking.

    • +3

arabica beans are lower in caffeine than robusta beans, the same bean roasted to different levels makes no difference but origin and species does, but you won’t see caffeine quoted for coffee like alcohol %abv in wine, spirits or beer. Either buy decaf or just enjoy what you have bought, in wine they say “drink what you enjoy and enjoy what you drink”

      • Very well put, thank you sir.
