If only that was the standard pricing. Hawker food in Melb is no longer at hawker prices. Cant believe in the CBD now most places charging over $20 for fried hawker style noodles or a laksa.

    • +1

Thankfully pho hasn't passed $20 in Sydney yet

      • +11

        Edging super close though…

        • +8

          Phrasing!

      • -1

Unfortunately Mel beat Syd to it :(

        • Oh really?! What about in Footscray and Richmond VIC?

Sydney is about $18 rn, pushing $19

        • +3

If you’re paying $20 for pho in Melbourne, you’re eating at the wrong places

      • +4

Costs about 2 bucks to make and still not filling

        • +4

I agree with you, but the raw ingredients are by far the smallest part of the cost of restaurant food.

          • +2

@rumblytangara: yeah labour cost in Aus is expensive.

            • +4

              @G-Shock: Need to pay for Rent + Insurance + incidentals + wastage + utilities + crockery + admin + advertising + signage + profit

        • +3

Simmering broth for hours is pretty hard, I'd rather pay a restaurant.

But I wouldn't pay for a steak or salmon bc I can cook my own pretty well

          • +2

            @Fobsessive: Agree

The place I go to in brisbane is $21 for large size, which is about right for adult. Claims no MSG used, and minimum 36 hours broth simmer. I’d be flat out simmering it half a day let alone 36 hours…

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Jackpot dining goes alright for a cheapish feed - good variety of dishes albeit a bit westernised.
Little Singapore in Charlotte St used to kill it, shame they closed all those years ago.

        • An Bankstown has always been priced above average, I don't count them

    • +4

When will it ever be comparable to "real" hawker prices in SEA. It's all relative to the local economy.

    • +3

I have long given up looking for hawker food in Mel CBD.
      Expensive, and not "authentic"

      • Thinking that too. Even all the new places that have popped up recently not exactly authentic.

    • +5

Can I get a $5 PappaPoor rice instead?

    • +5

it's a symptom of high property prices which = high rent. we improve this one issue, the benefits will be felt everywhere

      • +1

No no no! My commercial property portfolio!

Better get one of the newspapers my buddy owns to ChaptGPT up another "Workers are returning to the office full time" BS article and some "Inner city businesses failing due to too many people still working from home, the bastards" crap…

  • +14

Agreed not running out to spend $12 as a special price, the quality is pretty hit and miss anyway at that place and westernised.

Places like Little Singapore used to be good about 10y ago, massive seafood Laksa normal price was about $13.

    • What wqs the normal price?

      • no idea

    • +1

Soon it will be cheaper to fly to Vietnam to eat.

  • Curry Chicken

Is their chicken on the bone or fillets?

    • +1

      bone

    • +2

It looks like on the bone. You can find photos here (in the rice section): https://www.papparich.net.au/menu

    • +10

That’s such a Gwei Lou question

          • +2

@0806449: In my household, Gwei is an endearment word.
"Sei Gwei", that's what you call your husband or boyfriend.

          • -2

@0806449: Dont you know, its only racist when its one way and funnily enough its usually the more racist population groups that are protected in the west.

            • @lonewolf: Still pretty easy and doesn't take much for people to jump on the china hate train, probably a good idea not to start that line of thought usually (and seems irrelevant to start with).

      • +1

who cares it's not even Chinese grub.

  • +7

It's marketed as "hawker food" primarily as a point of reference but it's served in a restaurant environment. Whether the service is up to scratch is another discussion but don't price a meal based on the fact that you can get it cheaper in some dinky back alley in Asia. It's the same as paying $15-$25 for a "restaurant burger"; yes you can get it cheaper at MacJacks but you're paying a premium because apparently a professional chef is presenting it to you on a plate with fancy tissues.

Same with a $30 pizza from an Italian restaurant.

    • +12

At the risk of being down voted - I'm actually a fan of Pappa Rich. I think their food is decently flavoured and they have pretty generous portions - I've never left still feeling hungry.
Sure it may not be the best Malaysian food in Syd but I don't understand all the hate they get.

      • I would rather grab one of these a high processed Large big mac meal for like $15.

      • +2

Papparich used to be decent when they first started. But the problem is now its all microwave reheated food. Only thing fresh is the Roti. as well as the service size of the curries are a lot smaller than they once were. Combine that with the fact that there are a lot more malaysian restaurants out there…

        • Their wot tan hor (N13)'s wok hei sear is amazing and not microwave work

          • @Fobsessive: looked it up, so its a noodle soup / noodle gravy dish? Sounds interesting. I will try it out next time.

    • Random question @roopdesu did you go to a school in petersham in the 90s?

      • Gesundheit @lonewolf. what's a Petersham?

  • +3

    Vegetarian <> mutton

    • +1

Lol that made me chuckle as well… I guess technically true lamb's are vegetarians..

    • Agree but you'll never change people's mindsets.

Mutton would be the dirtiest rank meat around haha

    • Vegetarian <> mutton

      It does…

    • +4

They're referring to the mock meat mutton (which is their vegetarian alternative)

  • No, just no

  • +6

    $12 Nasi Lemak @ Papparich

    Pappapoor

  • +3

    How's the food?

Last time I tried papparich the portions were small and fairly bland tasting (Nasi Lemak)

  • +8

last year is $10. food is average. $12 is not even special.

    • +2

Yep, 20% inflation from last year. While I don't mind the food and think it's decent, won't make a deliberate trip for it this year.

  • +3

    not even cheap at all

  • Nasti Lemak.

  • +1

    Not worth the long queue

    • No queue when I went last few years
But I don't go at peak eating times
      Depends on location & time

      • Once again no queue, plenty of tables vacant.

  • Not worth $12 and the wait..

  • +3

Pappagarbage, I'm always surprised that place is still going.

  • +3

Paparich is garbage tier malaysian food. :/

  • +2

Watch out - I went a couple years ago and they only give you a teaspoon of sambal.
Ask for extra? That'll cost you $2 for another teaspoon.

    • +1

      Yeah pretty ridiculous,best tasting item

  • +4

Ironic thing is that Nasi Lemak has its origins as the poor man's food in Asia. Now at $20 it is anything but…

    • +3

I've tried a Lobster Nasi Lemak lol

    • +3

yep. 3rm for rice, sambal, peanuts, ikan bilis, boiled egg. add fried fish for another 3rm. They're acting like its gourmet food here and its insane

      • +1

        You're in Australia not Malaysia

        Dumbest comparison ever.

Wages , taxes, supplies are much higher in Australia.

And you're comparing to a Hawker or roadside stall that prob doesn't pay taxes at those prices

        • +1

Have you eaten at Papparich? The rice and curry and pretty much everything is reheated in the microwave. Only fresh thing is the Roti .

          • @lonewolf: The one i go to is freshly made and decent.

But at the end of the day if you want to compare, then compare say to Macdonalds which is $14-15 for a Large big mac meal.

They aint any better in regards to "freshness"

The places i go to for more "better quality" Nasi Lemak usually is closer to $20

            • +1

@SpeedRunnerLink: Freshly made ? Which stores are these, Every Pappa rich store i have been to are the same, they are all following their processes and nasi Lemak in all of them are microwave reheated. I am pretty sure this was even confirmed by some of the workers in a previous Papparich thread. The Nasi Lemak in Papparich is $20+. There are much better malaysian restaurants at similar prices to Papparich these days if not cheaper. Laksas at Papparich are tiny and not worth the price compared to a lot of other Malaysian restaurants with better laksas.

              • +1

@lonewolf: This deal is for the $12 offer. Unsure why you are bringing up the $20 dishes.

Seems like you just have a major gripe with them which is fine but its still irrelevant to the $12 deal.

                • @SpeedRunnerLink: I actually used to love Papparich as i had tried them before they came to sydney and australia. What I am really disappointed with is how downhill they have gone over the years from when they first started and from how they used to be in Malaysia. I havent had them in malaysia for a while so not sure if they have gone downhill there too. I was very excited about the prospect of them coming to sydney and used to go there a bit.

I am just stating the facts about Papparich. I brought up their normal price, because you stated and i quote "The places i go to for more "better quality" Nasi Lemak usually is closer to $20" well Papparich nasi Lemak is $20. So you are basically saying the other places are better quality for cheaper / same price as Papparichs standard nasi lemak price. That means you are actually agreeing with me. This is a special deal. So you should then compare it to when the other places have a deal on as well…?

There are many other better malaysian restaurants these days in sydney.

                  • +1

                    @lonewolf: Fair Point.

However I dont know about you but Papparich has never been that great in Malaysia and ran by foreign staff that arent even Malaysian and tastes like crap.

Majority of their stores have closed down for many year in Malaysia.

                    • @SpeedRunnerLink: Yeah I just checked and apparently they have gone under after having financial issues a few years ago.

    • +1

That's how things evolve I guess.

Caviar used to be a poor mans food.

      • Along with most seafood like oysters!

  • Puppa ain’t gettin rich with prices like this

  • -2

Unfriended them since they closed down the store in my area and the store in the CBD.

Saying good bye soon I guess?

  • See you all at Wynyard shop tomorrow!

  • +1

I like the flavours of this but I'm never, ever satisfied with the size.

    • That's what my Girlfriend told me last night.

    • Same - tasted good, but not enough to fill-up on a cold day.

  • Man it's a toss up. Papa Rich has become so bad in recent year, but Nasi Lemak is Nasi Lemak!

    • The pouring rain and the travel time to get there decided that for me :(

  • +2

I can get nasi lemak from a few places for $10 in Melbourne. Why would I pay $12? And sometimes I get two curry chicken drumsticks instead of one! 😂

    • +3

      Do share the $10 places!

      • +2

Ya doubtful of these places existing, even my local Malaysian charges $15

  • +1

    Lunchtime report ?

What are the queues like now ?

    • Not sure where you are but WA Cockburn, i called about 1pm and they said it wasnt too busy. I called around 5pm to order and they said 10 mins. Mine was pretty good, might get another tomorrow

  • +1

I went recently and it was terrible.

They used to be better when they first opened. Unsure if it was just the day I went or it’s just that bad. Disappointing because I love Nasi Lemak.

  • +2

Brisbane (Coorparoo) 28C🌞 50c Bus $12 lunch! What more do we want😉
Before 1pm - no queue, plenty of tables, quick service.

Had Fried Chicken (precooked) so not hot, but crispy & served in minutes.
    Chatted with Malaysian couple there.
Same size as usual - similar to ones I've enjoyed at small places in Malaysia.
Will be back for curried chicken tomorrow!

    • +1

Just arrived - again no queue.
      Only about 20 customers.
Served curried chicken in 1 minute of sitting!
      Tasty & hot.
Back on bus to Southbank, full & satisfied

  • +2
