Upgrade to nbn FTTP Now or Later for a New NTD?

Hi, new NTD’s are coming from September. Confirmed on nbn website here: https://www.nbnco.com.au/learn/network-technology/fibre-to-t…

I have the upgrade scheduled next week. Finally switching from FTTN to FTTP. Worth waiting for the new boxes or just get the install done now? Upgrading via Leaptel 500/50 plan.

Thanks

  • how much was the upgrade?

    • Free installation at eligible locations when you signup for a 100/20 or faster plan.

      • What about if you already have a 1000/50 ?

        • Most won't get a new nbn NTD unless you upgrade to 2000Mbps. Do you have FTTP or HFC?

          • +1

@Twix: FTTP, I will move to 2000 anyway

            • @Far Cough: nbn 1-port NTD with 2000/200 or the nbn 4-port NTD with 2000/500 from mid September.

    • Free. Currently on 100/20 FTTN ($90/m) going to 500/50 for $70/m for first 12 months.

      Install scheduled next week.

I was reading some new NTD’s are being installed already

    Eg; https://www.reddit.com/r/nbn/comments/1mwsof1/nbn_gave_me_th…

The only ones being installed already are the 4 port ones. They only go in if they are replacing a previous old 4 port one for any reason, or the premises will require multiple services. The new smaller single port NTUs don't start going in until the specified date.

The old 4 port NTUs were one of the stupider NBN design decisions. Almost no-one, certainly no-one in residential premises, actually needed multiple services. It just pointlessly pushed up the cost of FTTP, and the whole NBN.

4 ports isnt needed but is a super nice qol feature, being able to have your old and new internet service connected at the same time with no downtime is very handy.

        • Life must be hard these days …

Last time I changed providers (early 2024) - I was without internet for 3 hours … And only because they had issues with changeover.

Majority of ports is only mere minutes downtime (or reboot). For RES users they'd barely notice.

WFH on a RES connection ??? … you can schedule cutover to happen at a certain time of day.

          • +1

@simplystu: Last time I switched providers I had about 2 minutes downtime, the time it took me to switch ntd ports and reboot the router.

Idk why people argue things like this, if it makes things easier then why not, why would you argue to go backwards feature wise.

Can confirm, HFC here, got my NTD replaced 2 weeks ago and it's a new 2.5g one.

nbn FTTP 4-port NTD may be installed for free next week. There is chance you get the older Gigabit nbn FTTP NTD. If that happens you can get the nbn 1-port NTD with 2000/200 or the nbn 4-port NTD with 2000/500 from mid September.

You can get the nbn FTTP 1-port NTD for free from mid September when upgrading to FTTP.

nbn FTTP 1-port and 4-port NTD new wall mount brackets.

nbn FTTP 1-port and 4-port NTD can be retrofitted to the bracket used for the Gigabit nbn FTTP NTD. There is a grey lid that covers it up.

Thanks for the pics and info

Apart from the new NTD being physically smaller, what’s the benefit on getting the new one?

This is a change by NBN to reduce cost and support higher speeds so no benefit to you unless you end up on a plan which the older device doesn’t support, in which case they will switch it out.

    • Valid point. I don’t see myself going above 500/50 plan! The 100/20 has been working okay for a while with occasional slow speeds during evenings.

    • +1

The new nbn NTD box has a 2.5GbE port. This is for 2000/100 HFC, 2000/200 FTTP and 2000/500 FTTP.

      • So worth getting only if planning to go above the 1000 speed.

        • That is one reason. nbn FTTP 1-port NTD is:

          1. Capable of 2000/200 and 2000/500.
          2. Smaller.
          3. The indicator lights can be switched off/on.
          4. Uses about 40% less power on average (under 4.4W).
          • @Twix: Random, but do you know how much power the 4 port uses? Compared to the existing (legacy) 4 port?

            • +1

@doot: I don't know if the 4-port is the same as the 1-port (under 4.4W) or different. Someone will test it soon.

  • New boxes are much smaller but only a single outlet. I'm waiting

    • Yeah I like that they are smaller in size. Just not sure if I ever will need the other three ports.

What is an NTD and why is the new one better than the old one?

    • +1

nbn NTD box connects a home to nbn FTTP or HFC. If you have nbn FTTN or FTTB you don't get one.

The new nbn NTD box has a 2.5GbE port. This is for 2000/100 HFC, 2000/200 FTTP and 2000/500 FTTP.

Different connection type. But I can confirm that HFC has been getting new 2.5g ready NTDs for months now. Was having service issues a couple of weeks ago and NBN tech replaced it with the new model.

Get it done now, you don't really need those extra ports unless you're running a business.

    • +1

Yup, I am pretty sure, I'll be needing only one port.

  • Update - NBN contractor advised they couldn't do the install due to colorbond roof and that I need to get a cabler to do the prep work.

I asked him if he could show me the two boxes that will get installed. He was cool to do that. The NTD box was the current one with 4 ports (not the upgraded one). He had a lot of 'em in his vehicle.

Left a 20m fibre optics cable pack for the cabler.

  • I contacted leaptel about the 4 port NTD (normally $300 extra) and they recommended purchasing an additional 500mbs plan so my current NTD would exceed its capacity of 1.25Gbs on a multiport service so NBN will give the 4 port for free. Really good customer support!

    • Let us know how you go as I’m pretty sure the NBN policy is to charge for that new 4 port NTD

    • Did you end up getting the 4 port unit?
I am getting a FTTP upgrade installed on the 30th through Leaptel so if ordering an extra service is an option to get the 4 port unit it might be the way to get the 4 port unit cheaper.
Leaptel charges $110 for the 4 port, but their 25Mbps service is $49.95 per month so hooking that up for a month might be the way to go.

    • I did exactly that, but entirely by accident. I was trying to diagnose ISP problems and connected with leaptel on a second connection, and upped my speed so I had 500 on 1 and 1000 on 2. I thought since they were both "under 1000" it would be fine.

Suddenly I get an order for a new 4 port NTD. Oops!

      • What did they charge you for the upgrade to the new 4 port NTD?

        • Nothing :)

They've just left. hurray 1000 speeds! (actually it's 960 at the moment, but could just be busy WFH people, will check later tonight)

  • Does anyone have the details of the power supply voltage and power draw for the 1 and 4 port versions?
I can see from above the 1 port draws 4.4W, but can't find the info for voltage for either or the power draw for the 4 port anywhere so far.
I'm thinking about trying to use one of the 802.3af POE injectors I have laying around which will do 15W. That way the power can all come from my rack and use the UPS.
I guess I should also ask if anyone knows if these units do POE. Not a big deal if they don't because I can just use a POE splitter which can do 5/9/12V but it would be really clean if they were POE.

    • nbn FTTP 1-port and 4-port NTD.
      PSU: 12V DC, 2 PIN, 1.5A.

      • +1

        Thanks Twix.
Unfortunately that is 18W so POE af is a few watts short.
So the 4.4W mentioned above must be the standby and they must peak a bit to get to 18W.
Now to find a POE+ 802.3at injector splitter pair!
