Volkswagen is an (profanity) company that pushes the subscription BS

    • -8

BMW backtracked when it backfired. At least BMW makes half decent car.

      • -2

Not really no. BMW just tried pushing a digital subscription on me for maps updates, real-time traffic information and being able to use the car’s exterior cameras remotely.

For the low, low price of $199 annually. It is as if these clowns don’t know that phones exist. But I guess some boomer customers may actually pay them for a worse version Google Maps.

        • +1

"BMW just tried pushing a digital subscription on me"

Buy a newer one. They have stopped the subscription none sense on heated seats etc after it backfired.

Map update has always been expensive from day dot and anyone with phone will just use AA and CP.

At least no plastic bits in the waterpump, nor a dual clutch that will leave one strained. The BMW rear wheel drive platforms are still one of the best out there.

          • +1

            @SetTheFaqUp:

subscription none sense on heated seats, etc

Oh my lord! Really? Seats? Maps? Wow!

I’m an owner and a fan of Tiguan’s but that’s ridiculous they did this. No way I’d accept that shit.

            • @YoursTruly: There are a few used BMW's floating around from cir covid era with many subcripable options from heated wheels, seat to performance tunes.

What I don't know is whether the parts (such suspension) will be covered indefinitely by bmw in the forms of warranty. Might be a good deal if it is the case, given adaptive suspensions of all forms are prone to immature failure.

              • +6

@SetTheFaqUp: My car (2019 BMW) got stolen this afternoon. The @$@#% was driving around in it. We have the BMW Connected app subscription active, and had live updates of where the car is to the police. They brought in the helicopter and located him, but unfortunately had to go to an emergency so had to leave. We got our car back, and lots of video of this douche…

So my comment: the subscription's worth it for me. Amongst other things, I think it goes toward the sim in the car.
Regardless, it paid off 10x for us today.
And we know where the piece of shit lives, what friends he visited to show our car. etc….
Don't drop the soap mother …

            • @YoursTruly: I've never heard of a Tiguan have subscription. Ours doesn't

    • +1

You have the option to look the other way , your comment will not make any difference to the masses .

    • Big company, the whole market is changing around them and they continue with their same old push. VW soon to go the way of the dinosaurs unless they get competitive.

This is a Tiguan Allspace, will be superseded by the Tayron.

    • hmmm… VAG must have had a drop in sales vs forecast?

  • +1

The leather interior bumps it up by about $20000… Why is a leather finish always so expensive for brands when they sell in this country!

    • +18

So they can rip off people

      • so they can rip people off and their skin?

    • +1

You can get aftermarket one installed (on the factory seats) for $2000~$3000

    • A used car with leather interior must be worth $$$?

      • you cant put seat covers on cars with airbags that pop up from the seat's sides

        • +1

Good to know but I wouldn’t cover leather seats with fabric anyway

  • +30

Also a lot of metal for 110kw.

    • +1

Yeah that little 1.4 is going to be working really hard

      • +8

as much as i dislike VW its not that bad

its 1.6 ton which is about the same as any other compact suv

the motor does 110kW and 250Nm and 0-100 is about 9 secs which is really ok

        • We had the same engine in our old Skoda Octavia wagon and I agree particularly with the manual we had. It poked around surprisingly well. A really sweet little engine. This said I would never buy a VW and try my best to avoid VAG. Skoda I would maaaaybe buy again only as they're the cheapest brand in there (of the Skoda, vw, Audi suite).

  • +4

Why would someone buy this over a say, Atto 3 or EX5?

    • +1

If you want a petrol car I guess. But seriously, then you should still not opt for a Volkswagen.

      • +2

What your suggested alternative at this price point pls?

    • +1

Especially if you have solar at home, free excess energy for your tank..

      • +2

or EV plans with low/free electricity windows. I basically get paid to drive as I charge for free and NL rebates me per 100km

        • You paid for that 100km rebate in your NL package, but go ahead.

    VW…..disgusting.

It's literally a 3 years car before it starts breaking down.

    • +2

110% agreed; the only ones that neg have never delt with the poor quality and appalling aftersales service

      • +9

I just neg because I and my family + friends have had completely different experience. Obviously some people have a bad time, no denying that but across our family we've owned 5-10 VAG cars and not much more than a hiccup. Current cars are both VW, a 2015 and a 2019 but am looking at adding a 3rd earlier model, the 2019 is a tiguan that we upgraded to from a 2013 tiguan that again had no problems we just needed more space.

We bought the 2013 tiguan for about 13.5k, drove it around for a few years and sold it later for 12k. Even compared to cars 5+ years newer like a 2020 CX5 I sat in i'd take the 2013 tiguan all day, interior + engine + gearbox are light years ahead.

        • +8

There was a female driver in the lane across from me with the bumper sticker “I ❤️ VAG”. I figured she was bold and being pretty open about things.

It wasn’t until sometime later that I realised what it truly meant and, yes, she was driving a Volkswagen…

        • I aint doubting the tech or interior look and feel. I still hold them up there in terms of fit and finish.

Its just when shit breaks… It breaks bad, and its its just not worth the headache. Been privileged enough to own 3 brand new + 1x used, vw products in 10 years… All with problems under warranty and one complete buy back.

Theyve done their dash with me

        • +3

In the same boat. Purchased a 2015 Golf R-Line during covid (2020) for $15k. Motivated seller at end of lease. Haven’t had a single issue, done basic maintenance myself and my wife loves it as a second car. Put 80000km on it and still worth $13k on Carsales. Can’t argue with that.

          • @thefud: Have a 12 year old VW with absolutely 0 issues - most major thing has been changing the battery. One because I killed it leaving interior light on, the second battery was simply age. Had a Skoda for 6 years with only one niggle which was fixed as it was a known issue. Now have a 2nd VW which is 2.5 years and zero problems. Bought because it was the right vehicle for my requirements. What's next? Who knows, will deal with thhat when the time comes.

            • @nafe: 10yo Polo bought new - no issues.

    • +8

At 8 years with the current one and all good. Previous started needing replacing parts at around 9.5 years. Don't know what you're on about.

    • Still rocking our 2017 Skoda Superb. No issues so far and we drive 10-15k KM per year. Mind you it's the 206tsi

      • 206tsi is a very different beast.

        • EA888 is one of the best T4 produced by WV. It is so good that even povo boxster runs on the EA888 blueprint. Other engines? yea, neh.

    • my 2012 tiguan i purchased in 2020 for $13k with 74k speedometer still going strong, no issues.

      • +1

It's limited to 74km/h? That doesn't sound like a good buy.

      • +1

Have a 2012 Passat ($15k in 2016) with 112k on the clock and it drives like a dream. Recently had to do a few valves, hoses, vac pump & the timing cover but that's all I've spent on it in the 9 years I've had the car, besides tyres & servicing. Wife has a 2023 Tiguan which we love & will look at upgrading that in 2 years to a Tayron.

        • im not loyal to the brand though, whatever is a good deal I'll take.

recently purchase a santa fe diesel my21 with 43k speedometer $31k.

  • What are they normally worth?

  • +3

    $39,990 for a 110tsi is a sluggish bad deal.
    DSG continues to cause problems.

    • DSG is fine now

    • +1

I agree, the best value I'd give this car is 35,999 including on-road costs. The 110tsi has horrible performance.

You can add an extra 10k to 15k and get a nice 162tsi Allspace if you're good with jumping in on EOFY or EOY deals with the dealership.

  • +4

Agree on sluggish, I had 162kw model allspace was just about right for power.

    • Agree, have the cx5 turbo, and that is the minimum power I would want

    • We are thinking of getting the new one to replace our 162kw but it's now 150kw or 192kw.

A bit annoying as we don't need 192kw and all the sports stuff but 150kw seems a bit on the low side. Gotta test drive one.

      • Before that I had a Passat all track which was a much nicer drive and now comes in petrol version

  • Old slow junk suv

  • +10

People talking down the brand instead of the car. Have you actually test driven one? It is a very refined drive.

      • +5

that begs the question, what SUV for $40k is good to drive and has good engine response AND has good warranty from a reliable Asian brand???

        • -8

Rav4 starts at 46k driveaway. For an extra 6k the Rav4 will run circles around any Volkswagen. And outlast it. 160KW to boot.

          • +9

@spacemannn: Crap interior on the Toyota

            • +4

@daft009: Oppose to crap internal components that are cheaply put together?

                100% depreciated in that time

            • -2

@daft009: So shallow mate, so shallow.

            • @daft009: Well pony up the extra and buy the Lexus.

              • @JIMB0: Fugly to me
                Looked a few times

            • @daft009: Yeah a rip for what you get

        • Can get 2 year old base model CX-60s for close to $40k and that would be my pick, if you really must have Japanese.

          • +1

@xyron: i think early mazda cx50s 60s whatever are shit

you gotta ask yourself why they keep haivng to do yearly revisions to 'fix' suspension and what not

they look good IMO but i also dont trust their hybrid systems

if it was just a plain 3,0 inline six? yeah

      • +1

Salty opining not limited to gaming PCs it seems.

    • "very refined drive" what does this even mean in layman's term.

      • +1

        NVH

        noise vibration harshness

        drive a Landcruiser 70 and then a Landcruiser LC300 and you'll see

        • "Landcruiser LC300".

They do last for some time. If "refinement" is what one after, then Lexus is the more obvious choice?

Modern day LC300 is not that bad to be frank. They have added some sound insulation to the top trims.

Lexus goes beyond with acoustic glass which even cut price BMWs are holding back and fitting those to their cars.

          • @SetTheFaqUp: its my opinion that a mid spec LC300 at $120k (!!!) is a vastly overengineered and refined 2.5 ton platform that most people will find to be absolutely amazing

i think that extra 5% refinement to get to a Lexus LX570d whatever isnt probably worth it???

who's gonna sit in a $120k LC300 and go "ahh this is low rent shit"

      • Like you can drive it smoothly, the engine feels strong and the car sounds insulated with better materials than what Toyota can afford

    • +3

My FIL has a 162 Adventure Allspace that he's about to trade in on an Amarok Panamericana. It's not bad to drive by any means (miles ahead of the miserable RAV4 that people pay over retail for) but I wouldn't describe it as "refined".

The 110TSI engine in these $39,990 buckets, on the other hand, is a dog.

      • +2

        100% on this RAV4 statement.

Biggest overpriced vehicle at the moment.. sure paying for reliability but the drive and interior is shocking for value.

        • +4

They routinely sell ex-gov at Pickles for near retail price despite being 2-3 years old.

Meanwhile ex-police Tiguan Allspaces go for $15-18k…I'd rather have one of them, kill it, and buy another one, than pay $40+k for a 3 year old Rav4. But people who hate cars, hate driving, and hate having to spend money on maintenance will always buy a Toyota over a European car.

          • -1

@xyron: i'd say is me if you can deal with some trips to the mechanic AND the idea that a truly debilatating problem can wreck the car ie. engine and dsg issues

i also DESPISE the RAV4 as a catchall - who the hell wants a 2wd base spec $46k pile of shit… that unfortunanately lasts forever

lifes too short to drive that kind of boring reliable sludge

BUT I admit the prospect of a reliable white rav4 that gets you to work all day every day has an attraction… for NPCs…

          • -1

@xyron: But people who hate cars, hate driving, and hate having to spend money on maintenance will always buy a Toyota over a European car.

Toyota GR Yaris, Corolla and Supra (Z4) are a dream for enthusiasts, all engineers from ground up as sports car. Why put lipstick on a pig with half baked nonesense that is only good for traffic light take off? The VW 4motion is well frowned upon being a front biased part time AWD, nor there is a dedicated FR platform.

For something a common person can afford, Porsche (VW) and the M cars have some great sports cars. If you pretent to like car and pretend to like driving, go VW. At least a Camry drive won't drive it like a hoon at traffic light.

            • -1

@SetTheFaqUp: The GR Yaris and Corolla are both built on the same platform as the regular cars. The Supra is a BMW.

Enjoy driving around in your wheelie bin.

              • @xyron: "The GR Yaris and Corolla are both built on the same platform"

The GR Yaris utilises GA-B front and GA-C rear designed to meet WRC rule. I don't think either the run of the mill Yaris or Corolla shares the same platform. So is the permanent AWD system, instead of an inferior Haldex front system used in many European cars and front end takes over at mid apex?

The GR Corolla is an afterthought with a few parts borrowed from the Yaris.

Yes, the Supra is a Z4 with BMW's inline 6.

Admirably great pocket rocket, I don't own either and still holding an old Evo amongst other things.

    • +1

not the 110TSI.. it drives like a lawn mower
