Budget Direct Tells You That They Don't Insure Houses in Your Area - after Making You Enter All Your Details

When requesting a home & contents quote, the first item entered is the area, but Budget Direct still string you along, requesting all the details about your house, before stating that they do not cover houses in your area.

I am sure they store all the information that has just been supplied. Hardly ethical.

Damn, where do you live? Guantanamo Bay?

    • After Alfred there was some articles about coastal locations being either having insurance prices jump hugely or just outright refusal to cover, affecting Noosa down to Byron - otherwise maybe a flood prone area… eg Lismore.

    • Damn, where do you live?

Why does Budget Direct only cover homes south of the Tropic of Capricorn in Queensland?

Northern Australia is exposed to more intense weather-related perils, most notably cyclones, than southern Australia is.

To manage claims costs and keep premiums low for our customers, our policy is to only insure homes south of the tropics.

At least they saved you from being insured by Budget Direct. 🤷

  • Tell me you live in Macquarie Fields without telling me you live in Macquarie Fields.

That is a pretty scammy act by a budget insurance company. May use a neighbour's address and fake personal details to get a quote first, then if you're reasonably happy with it, create a new quote with all real details.

"I am sure they store all the information that has just been supplied. Hardly ethical."

      What a load of rubbish!

Its a standard form to complete for all applications
Doesnt go through the assess and quote process untill all information has been entered.
This is NORMAL for anything you apply for or purchase
Besides they are oblidged by law to delete all personal information if you dont proceed.

OP's comment demonstrates a complete ignorance of the process and the privacy laws.

If this was the case, we wouldn't have issues with data breaches to the levels we have. Companies are only more recently looking at privacy, records and security properly, the primary reason is that it's getting easier to trace breaches back to the source. Along with rigid laws requiring disclosure of breaches. Companies don't want to be in the headlines for these sorts of incidents. Companies should not retain information unless required. But how that's defined is a grey area.

^ I do that for postage prices on websites, fake email too.

I do dummy quotes to compare. If they want an email address first, it's a pass or a dummy address to see if the next screen will offer the quote.

Never give your details unless you're ready to commit.

Never give your details unless you're ready to commit.

      Why?

      • Try it and see.

Hint: non stop spam calls from about a minute after they have your phone number, for quite a few online providers.

        • non stop spam calls from about a minute after they have your phone number

          I always use (03) 5443 2144

  • I had the same for electricity quotes but even worse, got all the way to connecting with 2 different providers before the 2nd could properly explain to me that I was on some weird tariff and needed to convert to the default one before transferring, so frustrating, still not transferred yet.

  • I am sure they store all the information that has just been supplied. Hardly ethical.

    1. Assume everyone you give details to is doing the same.

    2. I am ex insurance from a long time ago. Nobody cares about your details at all unless you haven't paid or you are a fraud.

    3. I am not an actuary but I do know that if they wanted to factor your details into a calculation then they don't need to get them from you. Your details are for sale.

  • Most insurances do that. They want all your details just for a quote, and they keep your details even if you don't go ahead with their insurance.
Then later on when you hear that Budget Direct (or any other) has been hacked and all their customers' details have been accessed, you think "no worries, I am not with them". Surprise surprise, yes you are not with them, but your details have been accessed anyway!
There should be mandatory huge compensation rights to make it too risky for them to keep your details when not required. But at the moment they get away with a cheap and meaningless "sorry".

  • Yes, they do not insure postcode 5024 in safe old Adelaide.
Before there was a new outlet and drainage there was supposed to be a chance of a 100 year flood of the muddy Torrens river.
If that flood occurred then Adelaide Airport would be flooded first.
    No chance.

Last time I went looking for quotes I ended up just staying with my current insurer. The amount of personal info they want just for a quote is criminal, or should be.

They must be making a fortune reselling this info.

It's annoying, and they're not alone

  • I had the same experience with Woolworths for contents insurance. Was trying to get the bonus points offer.
The only company who refuse to insure my area. Insane.

  • For those saying the information will be stolen/sold
There is a LOT of legislation governing how insurance companies gather, protect and use your information
There could be a hack or theft of date or similar
But I would be certain that the company would not sell that information on to third parties
They may aggregate and use information for their own purposes, but they won't sell it
