Tips for 150k QFF Points Towards Family Holiday

I have 150k Qantas Frequent Flyer points gathering dust, and we're keen on a family holiday in the next 12 months. I'm not a regular user of QFF points, so am not really sure where to start….any suggestions on how/where to get the most value out of them?

  • To start, how big is your family? Are you looking for overseas or domestic holidays?

    • 2 adults, 2 kids (10 & 13).
Overseas would be amazing, but that might be wishful thinking with the points balance!

      • Ok, so you get about 37500 points per person. You can use them for Jetstar to Auckland (16600 points each way including luggage). For Australia, you can do pick Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin, (not Perth as it is too costly).

You could cash it in for about 1.4c per point on Ozbargain classified. It’s probably easier that trying to find award flights etc… but in may not be as good value as a flight redemption.

  • You won’t get far internationally for 150K points; domestic reward flights are rarely good value; my advice: save more points with a view to a high yield reward

If it's just a tip does it even count?

Points don’t ever expire, so long as you’ve earned a single point in the past 12 months. And for that, use the Qantas Wellbeing app

Earn or redeem at least one point in the previous 18 months.

  • Credit card sign up should help start.

  • I normally fly the family to Sydney for work with me (from melbourne), it would cost around 7,000 points per flight. I was shocked when I took them to Adelaide and the cost was around 35,000 points per flight.

    • Why such big difference?

      • I am guessing because the Melbourne to Sydney route is much more popular. I've noticed Melbourne/ Adelaide flights are dearer in general.

        • perth is worse hardly any deals

      • Because the 7,000 points would be Classic Rewards (fixed rate per the award table based on distance), whereas the 35,000 points would be Classic Rewards Plus (variable based on the $-value - ~1c/pt) and increases/decreases with demand/seasonality (there have been occasions where these have been cheaper than Classic Rewards).
