Would 12v be OK for home use though?

    • +3

It depends on what your home use is. Probably yes. For home use you’re probably better off with Ryobi - warranty is the best for home users and the prices are generally much lower than professionals tools.

    • Yes

    • I'd say so, 12v package tends to lighter in weight and I cant imagine performance being an issue

    • +6

I use these professionally for a lot of different tasks, especially the 601 driver which is my favourite tool. I also get a lot of use out of the $20 magnetic light.

The sealed head ratchet is Dewalt's best and is in my opinion the best cordless ratchet out of any brand I've used. Pretty sure it tops torque test channel's rankings as well.

I've owned every Dewalt multitool and the 12v one is my favourite. Not necessarily faster than the M12, but nicer to use.

Installation driver is cool and useful and it's an absolute steal compared to the offerings from Bosch and Milwaukee. It also comes with 2 batteries. It's a great all around tool for drilling and driving to use around the house. I often use it with the offset attachment to get into hard to reach spots.

Recip saw is good for light duty jobs. 1/2 inch impact wrench has roughly the same performance of the very popular last gen M12 stubby, but a fraction of the price.

      • +3

Yep a lot of anti 12V people on here without a clue.
If you see below you will see my older post with details about TTC ranking.

      • I concur. As mentioned below, I have had the old brushed 12v drill driver and impact since 2013 and they go really hard for such a compact, light be weight unit.

They only time I don't use them is masonry (all double brick with brick internal walls in WA). For that I have a big old corded Ryobi hammer drill (blue version, before the hyper green). Not even an SDS, just an oldschool chucked chonky boy.

I do a tonne of DIY around the home and the DeWalt 12v line are more than up to the task. Amazing bang for your buck at these prices.

      • …aaaaannnddddd I just grabbed the sealed head ratchet DCF500N and a 5Ah battery. Bloody enablers!

    • +1

I have the 12 Volt Bosch Drill/Driver. Grinder. Circular Saw and a few other items. I find I use the 12 Volt 90% of the time at home.

DeWALT XR 12V Brushless Sub Compact Drill Driver Kit 2.0Ah $99
This isnt part of the 1/2 price sale since it's on clearance. Been very popular in the past

    • +2

      https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/dewalt-dewalt-xr-12v-bru…

Another kit that's even better value. 2x 3Ah batts, driver and impact, case and charger for $169.

      • +1

How did you come across that?
I searched for just simple "DeWalt" and it won't show.
Go to power tools, won't show, Power Tools Kits, won't show.

        • +1

You might have better luck using Google. Some things, like the 1/2 inch impact wrench kit don't show up for me using the Supercheap search.

          https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/dewalt-dewalt-xr-12v-bru…

        • It was via Google. Even when you click back up the tree to "Power Tool Kits" it doesn't show. Kinda weird, but I ordered so hopefully it gets processed tomorrow.

Just checked my emails, I bought a similar version of this kit back in 2013 from Sydney Tools. $235 shipped to WA. But they're the older brushed drivers and only have 1.5ah batteries. Batts are getting tired, skins still go ok.

I also have the Screwdriver skin (clutched 1/4" bit holder, no chuck, gets more use than the impact) and the Brushless Drill Driver @Yer posted above. Really buying this for the fresh batteries and hopefully sell the Drill Driver to fund another skin. I don't need 3x. Brushed one has been abused, chuck is a bit wobbly. Brushless is the good and precise one.

i got these and put my dewalt 18v batteries and it broke, does anyone know if dewalt will warranty it?

    • +4

They are physically different connector and contact so how did you do it?

      • I take it this also means these 12V batteries won’t charge on the charger than came with my 18V pruner from a previous deal?

Edit: DeWalt have some 12V/18V dual chargers

        • Most chargers support both. I think only the yellow high speed one is 18/54 only.

          • @timedzone:

I think only the yellow high speed one is 18/54 only.

Correct, the high speed chargers are all 18/54V Flex.

  • I just bought the 12v multi head 5-1 a few days ago for the full price at supercheap auto. That really hurts.

It’s excellent for home use. Smaller, nimble, and precise control. Great for every day stuff. Installed an electrical box, reassembled some cabinets etc it makes a lot of sense to have this to have better control and not over tighten, strip and maul your workspace with 18v variants.

I think $150 for the multi head, 2 batteries and charger is incredible.

Unfortunately the rest of the 12v line has the potential for being underpowered imo. Which is why we are seeing the fire sale. Dewalt is moving away from 18v.

    • What voltage are they moving to?

      • +1

        Certainly not towards the 12v

      • +2

Sorry in my last line i misspoke

Dewalt is moving away from “12V” not “18v”.

They are going to focus on 18v moving forward

  • These Supercheap Auto deals are a good find - thanks OP.

  • 12v boooo!

    • this is perfect for diy or light work, nothing wrong with it. only problem i see is that they are going to give up on 12v so no future updates or availability.

      • +2

Their 12V ratchets outperform their 18V equivalents, so it’s not all black and white.

  • +2

The corded polisher is the pick of these deals. I’ve got the 18V version but if I didn’t I’d have gone for this at the price.

    • I thought you can just use a random orbital sander as a polisher? Or some really tough jobs need the extra power?

      • You can use a DA polisher (different to a sander) and get a good finish, but the Dewalt polisher is on another level if you’ve got a significant size job. I also use it on my boat - a DA polisher barely touches it whereas the Dewalt polisher brings it up in no time

    • Got it for $193 from Bunnings just before they dropped the price - it's a beast compared to my old 750 watt jobby.

  • +2

I was seriously considering getting a Milwaukee ratchet to make use of the 12V battery I got with their heated jacket, but this deal is too good.
Plus the DCF500 is Torque Test Channels top rated ratchet, means a win win. I guess i will have to get a 12V battery and charger too.

Thanks for the links. I was going to get the Tool Pro 18v, but at these prices I think it's worth paying a bit more.

Pretty much all sold out for click and collect.

  • +1

    12v tho

  • How are Dewalt 12V vs Ozito 18V?

The work light and bar light are over $100 still after 1/2 price.

    • -2

i think dewalt is giving up on there 12v, so i would go 18v ozito because that isn't going anywhere.

      • You’ve said they are giving up on 12V twice now. Can you please link to DeWalt stating this. Otherwise I’m going to take it with a boat load of salt. I found a forum post from 2017 stating this claim too, yet here we are 8 years later still in operation.

        • -5

no one is stopping you from buying it, no need to get your panties in a bunch.

just make sure you pin this as a reminder in the near future that i told you so. lol

          • @Hugh G Rection: I take it from that response, that I can file your claim right along with some bro science a drunk guy dribbles on you at the pub.
By all means you keep going ahead in life handing out baseless information that may or may not become true at some undefined point int he future.

I take it you live your life 1/4 random Facebook post at a time?

      • +1

I believe it's more that Dewalt will not be developing any new 12V tools. But they will continue to produce what is currently available.

The Dewalt rep says this in the video linked below. From 6.45 in.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtR0w0bkYS0&t=216s

Also some discussion on it on the Toolguyd blog. https://toolguyd.com/dewalt-xtreme-cordless-tool-system-2025…

        • Thanks for a somewhat reliable source.
I say it like that not a discredited to you, but as I know what I got told when I was a rep was not always the end truth. I have seen it constantly where the sales rep gets told Y, but the truth of it started as A, and as it worked it's way down the chain, it mutated.

The forum I referenced form the 2017 claim started like that. Someone from DeWalt said they were done, no longer developing new items etc.. just like the guy in that video. At Page 3 of the forum someone else posts a screenshot from DeWalt support saying the opposite, and here were are 8 years later.

Now, what that rep said is true, I have that small PowerStack battery, there isn't much in to the 12V size, and it supplies a metric (profanity) more beans. Buuuut, it also costs an equal amount more.

I was never a fan of DeWalts 12V battery form, I think Milwaukee did it right allowing for much better form factor. The one big advantage in the DeWalt form is the ability to have a device that is 12V and or 18V which Milwaukee can't do.

You can never have it all.

          • @snuke: You definitely can't take anything a power tool company says with certainty. Eg; Milwaukee said they would never do 2 x 18v tools, or release certain tools because they are not "a me too company". Makita said the wouldn't stop with 2 x 18V tools, yet since the release of their 40V line, the 12v, 18v and 2 x 18v has been stagnant. Those are just a couple of examples.

I was all in on M12 years ago, and swapped to Makita 12v about 8 years ago as I liked a couple of tools better and I preferred the slide pack as I found the M12 grip a bit thick due to the stem pack.

It's a decision I am starting to regret though. While I like the Makita tools I have, their total lack of anything new in years is frustrating. Milwaukee on the other hand are continually expanding and innovating in the 12V line.

I have to say though, that there are a few of these 12V Dewalt tools I would like. Especially at these prices.:)

            • @revheadgl: Agree, Makita is good stuff, but they are slow to develop.
Milwaukee is expensive but they have everything and develop more and more faster than the rest.
Way less stuff DeWalt less stuff than Milwaukee, but it hits harder these days and usually can get a better deal.

These are large companies, things move slow, so buy the time you make a call on something and implement it, the market can change.

              • @snuke: agree, makita makes the best stuff. they aren't slow to develop, they are slow to the market, as a japanese company they do extensive testing and make sure what they put out is good and reliable.
milwaukee has a lot but not everything. they don't develop fast, they just pump out tools fast, then fix there faults with the continuous versions of the same tool afterwards.
i switched from milwaukee to makita as my milwaukee tools were mostly at the shop getting fixed and less time on the job site.

          • +2

@snuke: The biggest advantage of the Dewalt 12v form factor is that the tools are way more ergonomic than the M12 tools, especially the drivers. The multitool is a lot shorter as well since you don't have to fit the longer m12 batteries in it. The sealed head ratchet with a 3ah battery is also slimmer than the various M12 ratchets that I've used.

      • Surprising that it's the other way around. 18V will be replaced by 20V ones per this source
        https://share.google/DKBck6K5cuxmHI5qj

        • +1

No, that article is moronic to the point you missed what it's saying.
18V is nominal, 20V is max, they are the same batteries with different marketing terms.
Some other brand advertised their 18V nominal batteries as 20V.
All of a sudden all brands rightfully advertising their batteries as nominal looked under powered to those marketing their batteries as Max. so everyone is switching.

          • @snuke: They do mention the advertising talk and also did a tear down test on the 20V battery and conclude that the 18V and 20V are not the same and not interchangeable.

I guess I need to read more to confirm.

            • @bcYield: Well, yes and no.
For Nth America specifically yes, they may be two different batteries as they switched form Ni–Cd to Li-Ion at the same time as the marketing BS.
But their 20V is the same as our 18V, which they allude to when they mention the UK.

              • @snuke: A quick Google seems to agree that they are interchangeable and also say 20V is not really stronger than the 18V. No stress already.

                Thanks for the further clarification.

    • Both of those lights are 12/18V items, it will work with both 12V & 18V batteries. There are a few items on here that do that.

    • The under bonnet light might come in handy in non-automotive uses but yeah, over $100.

      • I want one, but yeah, super over priced. $60 would be absolute top dollar considering you still need batteries.

        • Considering it is $100 down from $200 …. Yes it is a $200 light … I grabbed one when collecting my items at bunnings. It's very solid in quality. Some older kids struggle to rotate the handle. For long term it worths the money. But only if I use it enough.

  • +4

If you want extra batteries Bunnings have the 5ah & 3ah batteries for the same price and seem to have a bit more stock/will deliver.

    • Got a drill set with box from ACL recent deal , coming with 2x 5Ah batteries. Now I have 4 DeWalt batteries. Dewalt are good at giving away free batteries.

  • -4

Do yourself a favour. Avoid 12V

  • Is the v12 hammer drill strong enough to drill 10mm holes in brick?

    • Just start with something like a 4mm pilot hole, then enlarge. Less chance of it wandering anyway.

  • +1

    This is a bargain IMHO
    https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/dewalt-dewalt-xr-12v-bru…

If I did not already have the Bosch 12v Flexiclick I would jump on this in a heartbeat.

  • I did not plan to have yet another battery system. Not after getting into 18v DeWALT with the McLaren deals. But the drill and driver kit is such good value I could not pass it up. After trying it out, I am so impressed with it that I ended up ordering the multi head kit as well.

I already have a few ToolPRO 12v tools and have found myself always reaching for them first (instead of bigger 18v tools) whenever I need to do something around the house. ToolPRO batteries are a different form factor - they insert into the handle instead of the ‘slide’ batteries DeWALT uses. Not having to make room for batteries in the handle has allowed DeWALT to design thinner grips. I find them much more ergonomic and the tools have better balance in use.

And I just picked up the circular saw kit with x2 5.0Ah batteries https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/dewalt-dewalt-xr-12v-bru…
Again, very impressed with it. For my use case, this is the only circular saw I will likely ever need. This was the last one at my local but there might be more around.

    • The Circular Saw kit is marked as Clearance but it doesn't show as a discounted price like the drill kits and other skins. I'm struggling to find anywhere else that carries it and what the original RRP would be.

The two 5Ah batteries are worth $64ea, so you can think of it as an $151 skin. Though I just bought one of the 5Ah batts and threw away the packaging. Should've maybe got this saw kit instead. Anyone in Perth want to buy a cheap 5Ah?

      • I justified it to myself as $100 for the skin after factoring the batteries and $50 for the tstak case.
I could only find uk prices for the kit (model number DCS512P2). GBP 250-300 translates to $500-$600 AUD which makes it seem heavily discounted.
Having said that, it would be even better if discounted by 50% on top of the clearance price…

    • Ozito 4ah battery $35 Vs DeWalt 5ah battery $220

Price to price comparison, I don't think DeWalt battery is 6-time more. Ozito sell their batteries cheap everyday. While DeWalt give free batteries every a while.

I picked up a fan that comes with a 5ah 18V battery from Bunnings. The fan itself costs half the price of the battery lol.

      • +1

        DeWalt 18V 5Ah battery is $149, their Powestack Li-Ion Pouch 5Ah is $249.
If you are gong to compare, then you need to be comparing their RRP prices, so the Ozito is 5.2Ah is $99, the 4Ah is $69 - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-4-0ah-lithium-ion-…

So is the DeWalt 5Ah at $149 worth 33% more than the Ozito 5.2Ah? When connected to tools that can make use of the power, yes.

        • Sorry It was 5ah and a charger pack for about $220 for the correction, that's what it was priced when I claimed the promotion.

Because Ozito does disount almost everyday for their batteries. I can assump their 4ah one costs $33.33. I'm not sure how much and how frequent DeWalt does discount on their batteries. I just do a quick comparision for the current price.
